Watched some vids and figured the mulch was a good idea cause it’s hot as shit up in this bitch. It landscapes the box quite nicely too. Guest appearance by the community herb garden.

I’ve got some bugs hanging under the shade of one of the tomato plants. I’m trying to figure out how to get rid of them, supposedly I just need to snip the leaves off and basically burn it. Maybe I’ll try that this weekend.

Update: pepper plants are doing well, they sprouted more leaves overnight and hopefully should be good to plant in the grow bags in week or two.

The plot will probably get too crowded, but I planted one eggplant plant in ground. It looks pretty sad right now. I'm worried this plant will need hella support. Gave one eggplant starter to a neighbor and another to Kates’ friend’s boyfriend who has a good sized garden in Bloomingdale.

Update 2: 5 gallon grow bags came in today! woot!

Update 3: through out the first transplanted seedlings (seen in video below). I forgot to punch holes in the containers so they drown. womp.

My mom dropped off more eggplant starters. I had nowhere to plant these so I purchased a few grow bags to see if they do well in those.

I’ve never grown anything in grow bags but I’m looking forward to it. Apparently it helps with airflow and prevents overwatering and root rot.

I pruned the tomato plants yesterday, removed some suckers and the first flowers from the cherry tomato. I really hope I was supposed to do that, remove the first flowers....

it’s supposed to be a nice weekend, so hopefully good sun and water for the plants babes. Grow babes grow!

Note: thinking about getting mulch to cover the soil in order to retain moisture and prevent weeds.

Update!

Just a couple of days and the Birds eye chilis are looking like they like they’re new home. The basil looks pretty good too. All are perky AF. I transfer them to the outside window sill every morning and give them a good watering. I’m trying to have them exposed to sun for at least 6 hours a day.

Thoughts: Debating on if I should grab some fertilizer or if the compost is good enough for the garden.

Update: transferred more of the birds eye chili seeds to soil, used miracle gro. So far, they’re lookin like happy pups.

Found two eggplant varieties at Home Depot this weekend! Got them in the ground. Japanese eggplant and an Italian eggplant. Let the races begin.

Lastly, Kate wanted to grow basil indoors so got one of those too. Here it is.

After about a week of wet paper towel germination, the seedlings sprouted about an inch or so long. I transferred 6 of them to compost soil and hope they take. Updates soon by the end of the week.

And that’s right I used Tiktok to edit my vid. I’m hip with it.

Trying to grow birds eye chilis from seeds. The method: stick seeds on a wet paper towel then in a plastic bag, and tape it to the window for warmth and sunrays. Shrugs, let’s see what happens.

Weekend progress! This weekend, Kate and I rebuilt our jank garden cage to fit on top of the raised box instead of around it. Actually measuring twice and cutting once works! Who knew. A lot of people knew, we didn’t know. We got the plant babes in the ground. We will see what happens! This is the spread so far:

No eggplant just yet. Fingers crossed we’ll find some this week!

Year Dos! I’ve seen, I’ve planted, and I’ve conquered. I’m going to document my second year planting some veggies, compare things to last year, and hopefully learn a few things along the way. The plan for this year:

German Queen heirloom tomatoes

Yellow pepper

Ghost pepper (going to do this one in a separate pot)

Mammoth jalapeños

Eggplants (TBD)

I plan on planting the starters in a couple of weeks when it warms up just a smidge. In the meantime, I’m on the hunt for eggplant.

First thought: I thought I was done with larger giant hauls, but here we are! Look at this haul!

Second thought: the giant Marconi peppers really do get giant. A couple of them were larger than the size of my hand!

Third thought: tomato’s are still a thing, found these 3 green tomatoes hiding amongst a barren land of tomato plants. These ones are the fighters. The tomato plants are unruly, and not producing much. Should I trim them down or remove the plants all together?

Fourth thought: eggplants continue to be rewarding.

Fifth thought: jalapeños are back! They aren’t as large as the beginning of the season’s but still good to go!

Picked off a cutie eggplant and pepper and in 15 minutes I cooked up dinner! This pepper is a giant marconi pepper. I think they can get a little bigger, so I’m going to leave a few on the plant a little longer.

I think my tomato plants are real dead. Bummer, not sure what happened there.

Plus! The mint I thought was dead is not dead at all! Look at it go.
