Importance of Genre
Genre is important to audiences and film makers in many ways. Although genres are not always precisely definable, genre considerations are one of the most important factors in determining what audiences will see or read. The classification properties of genre can attract or repel potential users depending on the individual's understanding of a genre. Genre creates an expectation in the minds of its audience and may fail or succeed depending on if that expectation is met or not. Inversely, audiences may call out for change in a antecedent genre and create an entirely new genre. This means that genre is equally as important to filmmakers. Genre gives them a rough outline of how the film’s narrative will be played out, and what the audiences will want from the film.
Codes and Conventions
with these, I had the chance to know the different camera setups such as the the Grammar of the camera, POINT OF VIEW, camera angles, camera movement. I also learned the value of codes and conventions because codes and conventions undergirds the constructedness
Reflection about CONSTRUCTEDNESS
Our capacity to process an idea is called construction. It enables us to construct a more complex reality of society. Examples of these are use of the language of the camera, editing skills and techniques, and the dialogues. this process requires the exercise of deliberate choice (what to include and not include, what to highlight, etc.). Construction also makes representations. Representations are the construction of aspects of reality that makes up reality
Construction is relevant because without it there be no commercial, ads, etc.
Empowerment of people through Media and Information Literacy (MIL) is an important prerequisite for fostering equitable access to information and knowledge and promoting free, independent and pluralistic media and information systems.
Media and Information Literacy recognizes the primary role of information and media in our everyday lives. It lies at the core of freedom of expression and information - since it empowers citizens to understand the functions of media and other information providers, to critically evaluate their content, and to make informed decisions as users and producer of information and media content.
Information Literacy and Media Literacy are traditionally seen as separate and distinct fields. UNESCO’s strategy brings together these two fields as a combined set of competencies(knowledge, skills and attitude) necessary for life and work today. MIL considers all forms of media and other information providers such as libraries, archive, museums and Internet irrespective of technologies used.
In recent years, Media & Information Literacy (MIL) has been increasingly recognized as a critical element in good governance and accountability. This is partly due to the rapid growth in technologies, which has contributed to a changing media landscape and new forms of citizen engagement. To thrive in this environment, citizens need the critical abilities and communicative skills to effectively access, analyze, and evaluate information. These skills will help citizens make informed decisions and form opinions that can impact their daily lives and the communities they live in, as well as minimize risks associated with the very same technologies, such as security, safety, and privacy. With its empowering effect, MIL can foster a citizenry capable and aspired to demand better services, hold leaders accountable and engage as active stakeholders in governance reform. Yet, MIL has struggled to gain the momentum needed to become part of the development agenda. However, this might be about to change.
The word ‘media’ is derived from the word medium, signifying mode or carrier. Media is intended to reach and address a large target group or audience. The word was first used in respect of books and newspapers i.e. print media and with the advent of technology, media now encompasses television, movies, radio and internet. In today’s world, media becomes as essential as our daily needs. Media of today is playing an outstanding role in creating and shaping of public opinion and strengthening of society.
Mass communication includes messages sent to large, public, dissimilar, anonymous, distant audiences using some intermediate instrument of transfer. The instruments include electronic (for example, radio, television, tape, and film) and print (for example, newspaper, magazine, book, pamphlet, brochure, direct-mail campaign). The "mass media," as they are often called, have grown to include the print media of books, newspapers and magazines, the electronic media of television, radio, and audio/video recording, and the new media of computers and computer networks. Mediated communication occurs when two (or a few) people use some intermediate means for carrying their messages. They do not communicate face to face and thus do not have direct feedback. Mediated communication often uses a mechanical or electrical device to transmit or receive messages. Examples include the telephone, closed-circuit television, radio, radar, and the communication satellite. Mediated communication also occurs through letters, reports, forms, and interoffice memoranda
The first means of communication was, of course, the human voice. The next major improvement in communication was the invention of printing. In Europe in the mid-15th century Johannes Gutenburg invented the printing press, which made books much cheaper and allowed newspapers to be invented. Communication became far more efficient in the 19th century. In the early 19th century the recipient of a letter had to pay the postage, not the sender. Then in 1840 Rowland Hill invented the Penny Post. From then on the sender of a letter paid. Cheap mail made it much easier for people to keep in touch with loved ones who lived a long way off. In the early 21st century the internet became an important form of communication. Today email has become one of the most popular methods of communication.
Reflection about communication
Throughout the lesson, I had learned the different definitions of communication, messages as well as their relevance in our daily life. Without communication, we will not be able to impart what we are going to say. I also learned the different types of communication such as the mediated, and the organizational. Mediated is the one we are using nowadays such as the cellphones, telephones, computers, etc while the organizational is for a working environment. Example: meetings, a priest delivering his homily, etc. Well in fact the world is evolving, we cannot deny that communication is evolving too. From writing on the walls of the caves up to now.
