my version of ganymede portrait 😶😶
currently losing my mind over the fact that we have no portraits that we know for sure depict the chevalier de lorraine except posthumous ones.
the armour portrait (and engravings after it) were posthumous, as are all other engravings.
we currently have no way of verifying who the sitter for the ganymede portrait is (after doing some digging, it’s unlikely to be lorraine if the attribution of the painter is correct; the artist to whom the painting is attributed, baldassarre francheschini, was not in rome at the same time lorraine was). i suspect that the fine arts museums of san francisco doesn't identify the sitter in the ganymede portrait precisely bc there is significant doubt that it's lorraine.
the blond miniature on the snuffbox was proposed to depict lorraine by some rando on pinterest but there’s no evidence to back up that attribution, and sotheby’s lists it simply as “portrait of a gentleman.”
an auction site listed a portrait that they claimed was lorraine, but as far as i can tell that’s based not on any information on the painting but on physical resemblance to the man in the ganymede portrait, which may not depict lorraine itself.
plus all of these portraits bear little physical resemblance to each other (excepting engravings after the armour portrait).
in all fairness i don’t have access to the archival documentation related to these portraits (ex. for the ganymede portrait, ideally there would be provenance records linking it to the house of guise or the royal family, which would strengthen a case for it being lorraine; as it stands on the fine arts museum of san francisco website, they only list one previous (london-based) owner), so take all this with a grain of salt. but based on the information that’s publicly available online, it seems unlikely to me that any of these portraits are anything approaching accurate.
it gives me so much joy, my little creatures
