mermaids would have to be dark-skinned and chubby to survive in the ocean 

water isnt a great means of protecting oneself from the sun theyd have to be very dark if they were shallow mermaids and they didnt want to be constantly sunburnt and they may be paler if they lived deeper in the water but theyd have to be buff and/or chubby as hell to resist the water pressure and cold of the deep sea

i’ve been thinking a lot about what can be gained from calling out fandom racism lately and i want to make this clear.

when i call out someone who has a history of being racist and being called out but still not changing, what am i hoping to accomplish here? other than getting anons who want to correct how me and my friends call people out and police our actions. what is the actual purpose of calling people out time and time again when time and time again they don’t learn? don’t change? continue to say that they will have an open discussion but block people and backpedal and cling to little pieces of my argument without seeing the bigger picture of dismantling racism? why do i and others do this? we’re tired. believe me, we wish we didn’t have racists in the fandom to call out. we don’t want to do this in an environment where there’s no actual growth and changes.

so. why we continue to reply to and educate and debate racists when it’s been proven before that these racists are incapable of doing the necessary self reflection to change their behavior and thought process isn’t at all for the benefit of the racists. it’s not about you anymore. you’ve had your chance to change and until you do our callouts are not for you. i want this fandom to be a space where people of color feel safe and empowered and know that racists will face repercussions for their behavior. where the safety and voices of people of color will be prioritized over the feelings of a racist. calling out racism is a form of protection of people of color. elevating the voices of those who call out racism is a form of protection of people of color.

we’re not making the fandom toxic, we’re ensuring that people of color who choose to not speak up and/or who are still unlearning internalized racism know that their opinions matter, that their gut instincts are trustworthy, that loving themselves is an option, that they aren’t crazy or overreacting for seeing a racist post and cringing away or having a panic attack or simply being angry. that’s what i hope to provide in this fandom when i call someone out. not just for that person’s personal growth, but for people of color to see it and feel validated.
