Feeling scared?  Here’s a little trick to help conquer your fears

To prepare you for a day of spooks, try out this simple yet effective strategy that will make the guy in the creepy clown costume a little less frightening.

A study from UCLA psychologists suggests that verbalizing your feelings at the moment you confront your fear can make you feel less scared.

For the experiment, a group of participants with spider phobias were asked to describe their emotions —or so called “affect labeling”— when exposed to tarantulas by saying phrases like, “I’m anxious and frightened by the ugly, terrifying spider.“

And what seems to be a counterintuitive tactic actually reduced the amount of distress they experienced. 

The participants who used more negative words to describe how terrified they felt were able to get closer to the spider and didn’t sweat as much as the participants who talked about the experience with more neutral language.

"That is so different from how we normally think about exposure therapy, where you try to get the person to think differently, to think it’s not so bad,” said Michelle Craske, a professor of psychology at UCLA and the senior author of the study. “What we did here was to simply encourage individuals to state the negative.”

So go ahead and visit that haunted house you’ve been too afraid to visit.
