Live slow, move fast
David Arcos facilitated the first part of our officers' retreat for Haas's Design and Innovation Strategy Club (DISC) -- I'm DISC's VP Finance and Sponsorship. David's advice to "live slow and move fast" really stuck with me.
"Live slow, move fast" is a counter-argument to having "balance" in one's life. Often we hear about the virtues of balance. To me that means everything in moderation and not acting quickly. David's perspective flips the concept of balance on its head. "Live slow" means taking the time to pause in life -- for me that's Shabbat, for Clay Christensen that's bible study. What is it for you? The key is using these pauses to reflect on what matters to you, what excites you, what you want to do with your life. These insights only come through pauses, through living slowly. Once we have those insights, though, there is no reason to hold back. We can "move fast" towards our purpose.
This concept recently came up at a dinner I attended. One of the guests told a story about fundraising for a synagogue. When he approached a donor, the donor said, "tell me your pitch and I'll write you a check." It was that simple -- the guest said simply how the synagogue would use the money and without needing to pause, the donor offered a contribution. Because the donor had a clear purpose in life, they didn't need to pause to consider whether to donate to the synagogue -- they recognized it immediately and "moved fast."
In Berkeley's Smart Cities class we learned about Koreans using smartphones to do food shopping in the subway using Tesco Home Plus (explanatory video). It's incredible how real everything looks. What a leap!

Our second semester just began and we're taking more core courses, including macro economics. One of my classmates just shared this great video that explains basic metrics such as GDP and CPI, and analyzes the government's manipulation of those statistics. Fascinating, if scary and a bit understandable.

During the day it's hot and sunny, although it's chilly at night. Still, nothing like the bitter cold east-coast winters.

R&D-I-Y: Research and Develop-it-yourself
Foodandtechconnect.com has a fascinating article about window-farms. The project raised more than $250,000 on Kickstarter! It turns out that this is part of a greater movement of open-source collaboration called R&DIY. I'd love to get a window-farm and to learn more about the R&DIY concept!
Inc. magazine has a great article about Evernote and the philosophy of Phil Libin, its founder:
Libin knew two things: He didn't want to be bored, and he didn't want to merely make money. "A billion dollars isn't cool," says Libin, contradicting the speech Sean Parker supposedly delivered to Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg. "What's cool is impacting a billion people. Whatever I ended up doing, I wanted people to get excited about it. I wanted long lines forming for it."
I think this is what the next generation of entrepreneurs is about -- it's certainly what I'm about. More than just making money, making a positive impact on people.
