my incredibly correct and absolutely 100% true bokuaka headcanons:
i imagine them to first meet during akaashi’s first volleyball practice as a first year (though we’ll never know til furudate gives us the fucking backstory), and second-year bokuto is very rowdy and excited to meet everyone and it’s love at first spike.
just. akaashi is staring with sparkling eyes and he puts a hand to his chest like “um…. excuse me?”
unfortunately for akaashi’s poor gay heart, bokuto is very affectionate with everyone.
a few of the first years had asked bokuto to not be so touchy with them, and it’s okay! bokuto understands! but even though akaashi has a look on his face and sometimes pulls away from bokuto’s touch, he’s never once asked him to stop.
bokuto probably started crushing early on too, but he didn’t realize it until he was like, halfway in love with akaashi.
he realizes it in a very cheesy way - akaashi is sitting in front of a window studying or something, and there’s sunlight surrounding him, and bokuto just gapes and almost blurts out that he loves him right then and there.
i imagine they become VERY quick friends. they just click really easily, despite their differences. i mean in the series they’re always seen together and walking together - they’re each other’s best friend.
i LOVE the idea of bokuto helping akaashi grow out of his shell. he’s not really shy, he’s just quiet, and prefers to observe rather than participate. but volleyball is a team sport. bokuto is the one who inspires him to talk more, to interact more. bokuto is the one who helps him learn how to love volleyball.
whatever subject bokuto struggles with, akaashi helps him, even if he doesn’t know much about the subject himself. he’ll whip out his textbooks and they’ll learn it together. trying to test each other on the subject usually ends up with bokuto making stupid jokes and akaashi trying not to laugh too loud.
it takes a bit for the team to notice just how in love these two idiots are. bokuto is very affectionate and happy around everyone, but it’s yukie who really takes note of everything.
bokuto’s hugs last a little longer with akaashi. his laughter is a bit louder and, dare i say, a little more nervous. he’s a bit more excitable whenever akaashi is around.
on the other hand, akaashi is always hovering pretty close to bokuto. he always makes a point to talk to him every day. bokuto’s the one he prefers to set to.
akaashi also literally has a list of “just bokuto things.” he’s very perceptive about his captain.
it wasn’t really a surprise to anyone when akaashi became vice captain, and bokuto captain.
however, what fukurodani was surprised by, is the fact that akaashi is just as much of an idiot as bokuto.
catch akaashi going along with bokuto’s antics, even if it’s after a bit of convincing.
bokuto: we should roll down this muddy hill.
akaashi:
akaashi: (sigh) you’re absolutely right.
akaashi is VERY smart! but he is a smart dumbass who does stupid shit and nobody in fukurodani can understand it.
he and bokuto are attracted to stupid. and smart. they’re in love okay.
and now… the heavy stuff:
akaashi’s parents… are not the best. they’re very firm in their ideals, and they push the idea that akaashi has to be perfect. his grades must be nothing less than the best. if he isn’t studying 24/7, then obviously he’s doing something wrong.
so he spends most of his time at bokuto’s house. bokuto doesn’t live with his parents - instead, he lives with his aunt and uncle and his cousins. they’re siblings to him, so it doesn’t matter anyway.
“i just disowned my own parents before they could do that to me,” bokuto replies when akaashi asks about it. “don’t worry about it.”
(akaashi worries about it.)
whenever akaashi’s parents are angry at one another and yelling at either each other or akaashi, he usually leaves and heads over to bokuto’s place. his aunt and uncle treat him like family, or at least, they treat him how family should be treated. there’s never any pressure or big weight on his shoulders when he steps through those doors. he’s just keiji.
now onto the actual dating:
akaashi’s head when thinking about bokuto or interacting with him is just a keysmash, followed by some screeching. anytime bokuto touches him he ascends to another plane.
this becomes a problem, especially when bokuto is the only thing he can think about. it distracts him from his studies, and even during volleyball.
at one point he’s so busy checking bokuto out he doesn’t notice the volleyball that hits him square in the face.
bokuto’s mind has always been fixated on akaashi, even before he knew he loved him, because akaashi is just that great!
(akaashi really doesn’t understand why bokuto, of all people, is so attached to him. he doesn’t think he’s really much of anything - you can thank his parents for that. bokuto is bright and incredible and draws people to him with his naturally kind energy. akaashi is just… boring.)
but bokuto thinks akaashi is anything but boring! he thinks he’s incredibly smart, and pretty, and always is able to say the right thing. he thinks akaashi has grown so much since his first year.
(bokuto’s never had as close a friend as akaashi before.)
so. the time has come where these two decide they NEED to confess to each other.
akaashi’s REALLY nervous, and he’s fidgeting with his hands the whole day, trying to decide what to do, where to do it, and what exactly to say. saying “i love you” is definitely not easy.
bokuto is… well. he has mixed feelings. he’s excited to tell akaashi how he feels, but he’s also afraid of being rejected. if he was rejected but still remained friends, he doesn’t think it would hurt as bad, but if akaashi never wanted to talk to him again …. he doesn’t know what he would do.
(that would never happen, because akaashi loves him back, but bokuto’s anxiety sends his mind racing all day.)
it happens after school, when they’re walking home together. or, well, to bokuto’s house, but that’s home to akaashi, anyway.
bokuto is rambling about something that happened during class, and the back of his neck is red, and he’s nervous, because akaashi is so close to him and it would be so easy just to say it.
akaashi is listening, gripping his bag handle tightly. all he can think is “i love you, i love you, i love you so much.”
he doesn’t realize he’s said it out loud until bokuto stops in his tracks and whirls around to face him.
“wh-what did you say??? you love me???”
“uh. um. well. suddenly i have to go–”
“NO WAIT! I LOVE YOU TOO!”
they’re both blushing messes. bokuto leaps in for a hug and starts twirling him around and akaashi is just. on the FLOOR. he’s so flustered he starts laughing, and then bokuto is laughing along with him, and they’re just standing on the sidewalk in the dark holding each other and giggling.
when akaashi is leaving bokuto’s house that night, he leans up and kisses bokuto before scurrying off.
bokuto almost passes out. his cousins laugh at him.
when they start dating, fukurodani thinks that their stupid pining affection shit was going to be over with. no, it gets worse.
bokuto kisses akaashi all the time. ALL the time. just as a reminder that he loves him.
akaashi’s affection is more subtle, and he uses his words more than his actions, which surprises both of them. sometimes, though, he’ll reach out and hold his hand - to calm him down, or himself down.
akaashi ALSO loves bokuto’s attachment to hinata. he’s sure that bokuto sees himself in hinata - it ends up in akaashi getting an attachment as well. that’s his son right there.
bokuto’s favorite time to look at akaashi is during volleyball matches (well, he loves to look at him all the time! but ESPECIALLY during matches). he looks at akaashi’s determined face, the curve of his lips whenever they get a point, the gleam in his eyes, and the look he gives bokuto whenever he spikes - he knows that akaashi’s not just in love with him, but with volleyball too. he looks so genuinely happy to be there, and SO eager to win and succeed. he joined volleyball as a means of getting away from the pressure of his parents, and it became something to him.
akaashi’s favorite time to look at bokuto is right after they win. bokuto struggles with a lot, mostly internal, with his anxiety and family issues, but the look on his face right after they win, there’s no trace of that anywhere. it’s not fully gone, obviously, but his eyes are shining so brightly akaashi thinks he could rival the sun. then, bokuto’s grinning as he runs over to embrace him, kiss the top of his head, and their team surrounds them. they’re all screaming, but akaashi hears none of it. it’s just bokuto.
