I do think saying that artists are “exploiting the 99%” is an interesting take. I didn’t buy the cd’s bc I agree that $4 is too much money for a cd with one song on it. That being said, it is up to each individual person whether they want to buy it. No one is forcing them. I feel like framing it as exploiting people by putting out three versions of the same song is doing a disservice because it’s implying people can’t think enough for themselves about whether or not to buy it based on their own wants/needs/situations. While I also think the three variations were excessive, clearly there was demand bc they all sold out in like less than 3 hours.

My take though on the high prices now is that people should stop selling things before they release the music. No tour sales before the album, no album/single sales before the release date. That’s another reason I didn’t buy the cd. They are essentially asking you to pay for something when u have almost no idea what it’ll actually be.

Obviously tho people aggressively coming at you in anon is not an appropriate way to respond to what u said tho. I acknowledge that I am also on anon and hope this doesn’t come across that way.

I think that the way you've put this is more what I was actually thinking. Thank you for putting this into more succinct words. I was quite upset yesterday, and was typing all of that while still at work -- and honestly it was a shitty work day.

I would still say that it's predatory and exploitative of the 99% to be doing all of this BEFORE albums/songs come out. ANY ARTIST, should wait until actual release for multiple (exclusive) variants and tour dates. Obviously, people are going to buy these items, but how much of it is FOMO or impulse buys? How many people have gone into debt for all of this? I went into credit card debt for the Showgirl cardigan, and I actually hate how it feels on the skin. I just didn't want to miss out on the cardigan, again.

I was lucky that I had the money to afford the Eras Tour and Short and Sweet, but I could never afford it again without going into debt, yet I would be incredibly tempted to buy because of FOMO.

My wording yesterday wasn't as well thought out or explained. Thank you for being nice and actually helping me put these thoughts into better wording.

I’m just calling out Capitalist Barbie for putting out three versions of the same song with exclusive items in each one in THIS economy. Sorry, that’s a little tone deaf imo. I think any artist trying to push expensive tours, multiple exclusive variants, and more right now is alienating the poorer end of their fanbase.
