Miraculous Ladybu
can we please talk about how upon learning marinette's HUGE secret, alya's immediate reaction was just to hug the crap out of her best friend ??????
like, that info must have been COMPLETELY shocking and also thrilling considering that alya is ladybug's BIGGEST fan and has been dying to know her identity forever, but look at how alya reacted!!!
There is a moment of shock, but almost immedaitely, her expression turns to concern and she reaches out to embrace marinette. alya didn't even gasp, or squee, or say "are you serious," or react in any other way that would be 100% expected and understandable. this is the biggest scoop she's ever gotten but that did not matter at all because her best friend is in pain and needs her comfort and support. she probably has 10 million followup questions but it all gets put on hold because she can see that what marinette needs more than anything is a HUG. omg. alya is the best friend ever and is completely worthy of knowing ladybug's secret and it was a good decision to tell her in this essay i will
the fact that this happened, in canon it happened, will be the only thing I think about for the next 25 years thanks
Alya is now torn between posting legit info on her Ladyblog versus intentionally uploading fake/ false news just to mess with Hawkmoth
(well of course its the latter)
Now I imagine Alya literally posting spam that is absolutely not true like “oh ladybug LOVES romantic comedies” and Adrien being torn between telling Alya she’s wrong but also not knowing how to explain why on earth would he know that.
Can we appreciate how Chat Noir tried to reach out to Ladybug knowing that she was going through a heart break.
He knew he doesn't know her personal life and that she doesn't want to share it, but he wanted to check in with her to help her. No jealousy of the thought that she was with another guy and no sly comment about how she can move on to him now.
Chat Noir has definitely developed since season 1 within this aspect and nobody can tell me I am wrong.
ok im seeing people take this comment as a confirmation of the true selves trope and i have some Thoughts lol
i don't think that was a confirmation that chat noir is actually adrien's "true self" but more an expression of his self-perception
adrien's a model. he's used to posing, literally and figuratively. what he shows on the covers of magazines is not his "true self"—that's the image people want to see, and he knows how to give it to them. it's exhausting to have to play the role of posterchild all the time because that isn't really him
but neither is "chat noir." it's really clear that adrien kind of puts on a persona when he suits up, and he leans into his natural goofiness extra hard because it's fun and freeing. but he also uses that humor to deflect a lot, and he tends to push back his feelings to keep up the fun-loving, carefree facade of chat noir. in a lot of ways, i feel like the mask wears him as much as he wears the mask.
i think maybe adrien doesn't really know what is "true self" is like, because he's never been allowed to just be. he is constantly performing, whether it's as the agreste brand posterchild or the wise-cracking superhero. he says that his goofy side is the "real him" because that's the role he prefers to play, but it's still a role. (he even acknowledges that in weredad when he says he “didn’t think chat noir was marinette’s type”—not that he wasn’t her type, but that chat noir wasn’t her type. meaning that he recognizes that chat is kind of a character he made up for himself, that doesn’t perfectly reflect the person he actually is)
so what is his "true self"? it's not "adrien" or "chat"—it's both. all of us act differently in different situations, but the characteristics that come out in one set of circumstances are still as much a part of us as the ones that are currently hidden. of course, we’re closer to our home base/true self when we’re around people we’re comfortable with, and with adrien we see this probably most strongly with nino and sometimes with ladybug or marinette, depending on the situation. those little moments when adrien gets a little bolder and goofier, or chat gets a little softer, or when he shows his disappointment or his loneliness on either side of the mask—those are signs that he feels comfortable enough with her that he can stop worrying about appearances and just let himself exist, however he feels at that moment.
probably the best example of adrien’s “true self” is how he is when he’s alone (or with Plagg). after all, aren't we our most authentic selves when there's no one to perform for? in those moments when he’s by himself, we see kind of a merging of those two sides of him that he has compartmentalized. he lets himself actually feel and express his emotions, and that helps us see who the “real” Adrien actually is—a sweet, soft boy with a big silly streak and a flair for the dramatic, who cares deeply about his loved ones and who longs to be loved the way he loves.
i feel like the fandom tends to put adrien in a box—either the “model adrien” box or the “chat noir” box, and i honestly think that’s a disservice to his character, which is really beautifully and subtly developed by the show writers. this is one of the reasons why adrien is such a fascinating and lovable character, and i hate to see him stripped down to a single, sparse set of characteristics when he is so much more than that.
im still marinating in this episode i promise i will make something seriousÂ
Chat Noir looking alarmed at Ladybug is an aesthetic
I'm starting to feel the presence of the kwamis during the end cards is symbolic of Marinette's new role as the guardian.
If you think about it, any episode where Marinette's new role played an important part of the plot included the kwamis at the end card.
Truth featured the kwamis not only as an explanation to Marinette's new responsibilities and how her Miracle Box works, but also because said responsibilities were a key factor to her breakup with Luka.
The only reason Lukanette broke up is because Marinette couldn't be completely honest with Luka, which resulted in him being akumatised because to him trust and honesty are everything. Luka wasn't even upset at the idea of Marinette not having moved on from Adrien. It wasn't until she told him outright she couldn't be honest with him that his heart finally broke.
Marinette's role as Ladybug, as the guardian of the miraculous, and Shadow Moth's constant meddling are what got in the way of their relationship. The heavy burden Marinette's carrying on her shoulders is getting in the way of her life.
Then we have today's episode: Gang of Secrets.
As you can see above, the kwamis are featured again in the end card. And that is because Marinette's life has become so stressful she's constantly lying and hiding her true self from her loved ones.
The cinema scene hit far too close from home to Marinette's liking. She said it herself: you fall for someone, but you're unable to tell him how you feel. So you wait and try, and try, and try until the opportunity slips through your fingers. And before you know it the boy you love is unapproachable and has a girlfriend himself. Of course, you're heartbroken, but then you fall for a new guy and everything's perfect. In fact, it's too good to be true. Lo and behold, you have secrets you can't tell anybody about, but your boyfriend hates secrets, but since you can't be honest with him, the only choice you have is to break up with him.
That film was a summary of her own love life and, moreover, of what her life was turning into.
Again, she said it herself: superhero movies are better.
Which is exactly the direction Marinette wanted to take her life to!
In the very beginning she was already obsessed with fighting Shadow Moth. Her only concern was stopping his newest akuma. And after talking to Tikki and seeing nobody could really relate to her, she made up her mind. Her double life's too complicated? Fine, she'll choose which life to live from now on. And she chose Ladybug.
It's actually a good thing the girls arrived when they did, otherwise who knows what Marinette could have done.
Luckily, this episode actually ended on a hopeful note. With Marinette finally finding someone she can vent to and be fully honest with.
Then, there's Monster Fu.
Marinette seemed to have a better control over her situation. Chronologically speaking, there are another two episodes before this one showing Marinette's development as the guardian and how she's dealing with it.
Again, this episode revolved around Marinette's new duties. This time she had to convince Su-Han that she is a capable guardian and that Master Fu's decision wasn't misguided, all the while she learned more about her role and the powers that come with it.
As you can see, the kwamis appear once again in the end card.
Do you want to know in which end card they DON'T appear?
In Lies:
Which makes sense once you remember this was an Adrien-centric episode. For once, Marinette was actually a minor character until they had to face off against Lies. Furthermore, the only time the kwamis appear is for a minute or two at the beginning, when they were fooling around Marinette's room.
This episode was all about Adrien and Kagami. And thus, there are no new responsibilities that need to be explored, because Chat Noir doesn't have the same responsibilities as Ladybug. Sure, we saw how packed his schedule truly is, but we all suspected it already because it had been mentioned countless times since Bubbler. In other words, there's nothing new.
While it should be noted that, just like Lukanette, Adrigami broke up due to secrets that couldn't be shared, we have to keep in mind that the difference between the two is that this is actually an exploration of how Adrien's relationships would turn out with him constantly having to take a rain check because of responsibilities he already has. While Truth was about exploring Marinette's relationship with the EXTRA BURDEN of being the guardian.
Summing up, if the kwamis play any sort of significant role, the chances of the episode focusing on Marinette as the guardian of the miraculous are pretty high.
While y'all lose your minds over Marinette telling Alya she's Ladybug, I'll be over here losing my mind over Trixx being my favourite kwami ever, alright?
