Miracle [the baby killer whale]
In 1977, a young female Southern or Northern Resident orca was found in Menzies Bay, British Columbia Canada. None of her pod members were to be seen, and she looked distressed and like she was heading for disaster. She didn’t hesitate to accept fish from people. On August 8, sixth days after she had been spotted the Vancouver Aquarium contacted Sealand of the Pacific and decided she needed to be taken into captivity, as she was bleeding and covered with parasites and had a good chance of dying if left alone. She even had bullet wounds, and cut from propellers on her. Despite what indicated negative interactions with humans, she was a very trusting animal with the staff at Sealand, and thrived under their care and attention. Due to all of those factors, she was named Miracle. Her health proved to be even worse than previously thought when she was examined by vets. She had ulcers, and many infections, and would often sink to the bottom of the pen and stay there for many minutes at a time. At one point in time, her heart actually stopped beating and she was clinically dead but she came back. and survived. Eventually, Miracle improved and was a relatively healthy whale. She got along well with Sealands other orca, Haida and performed daily with him. She grew very large, and almost reached sexual maturity, but died suddenly in 1982.
Miracle died when she was only 7 years old, after 6 years in captivity. She drowned, but it was never confirmed how, though it is very likely some divers tried to free her by cutting a hole in her net, and she got tangled up while swimming out. This could be why Sealand later installed the holding tank for their Icelandic whales, to prevent a similar accident.
Miracle was loved by many, and she is one special case where captivity saved her, and gave her six extra years of life.

See this is one case where captivity actually did something of value, the rehabilitation of a sick animal who would’ve died otherwise. Pressing for rehab and release should always be the goal in mind if at all possible, not mindless entertainment with noodle thin educational value. Animals deemed unfit for release should have a place to life out their life in PEACE under vigilant wildlife staff, not before a screaming crowd. It’s sad extremists are the possible cause of her demise, luckily there are far more sturdy materials now adays for animals like Lolita to safely rehabilitate in without the risk of premature release caused by extremist intervention. She was a gorgeous girl, RIP Miracle.
05. Kayla
Kayla is the second oldest of all the orcas born in captivity. At age two, she was separated from her mother and shipped to different SeaWorld parks. Having never learned how to be a mother herself, Kayla violently rejected her first-born calf. Afterwards, she was moved to SeaWorld Orlando to be in the company of young orcas with their mothers. Kayla’s human trainers regard her as a master of all show behaviors, but to her spectators, Kayla is most known for her striking blue eyes.

Scientists discover most relaxing tune ever
Sound therapists and Manchester band Marconi Union compiled the song. Scientists played it to 40 women and found it to be more effective at helping them relax than songs by Enya, Mozart and Coldplay. Weightless works by using specific rhythms, tones, frequencies and intervals to relax the listener. A continuous rhythm of 60 BPM causes the brainwaves and heart rate to synchronise with the rhythm: a process known as ‘entrainment’. Low underlying bass tones relax the listener and a low whooshing sound with a trance-like quality takes the listener into an even deeper state of calm. Dr David Lewis, one of the UK’s leading stress specialists said: “‘Weightless’ induced the greatest relaxation – higher than any of the other music tested. Brain imaging studies have shown that music works at a very deep level within the brain, stimulating not only those regions responsible for processing sound but also ones associated with emotions.” The study - commissioned by bubble bath and shower gel firm Radox Spa - found the song was even more relaxing than a massage, walk or cup of tea. THIS IS IT, GUYS. This is the song I listen to when I’m feel a panic attack coming on or can’t sleep because of my anxiety. It has helped me more times than I can say.
SeaWorld is educational. If you're against captivity you're against education. Also, we wouldn't have as many chances to get so close to such beautiful creatures if they didn't keep them captive.
SeaWorld’s not educational. Here are some reasons why:They ‘teach’ us that orca only eat fish - dead fish if you ‘learn’ from watching one of their Shamu shows. In the wild depending on the orca’s origins they have been known to feed on fish, stingray, seals, penguins and even other cetaceans. If SeaWorld was educational why do they house both transient and resident orca in the same tanks when in the wild these animals would not mix?
In the wild orca don’t mate within their families. Once a calf is born it never leaves its mothers side - meaning pod’s are made up of mothers and their children. Fathers remain with their mothers and siblings. In SeaWorld orca are inbred causing premature death, more stillborn births and other complications much less common in the wild. If SeaWorld were educational would they not refuse the sale of Tilikum’s sperm given his past psychotic and aggressive behaviour (due to being cooped up in a tin can for the majority of his life) instead of allowing him to father 21 SeaWorld calves purely for profit (having trained him for artificial insemination). If SeaWorld were educational why would they impregnate their female orca’s before they’re mature enough and why would they impregnate them so soon after previous births? In the wild Orca wait 5+ years between births. Why would they allow pregnant mothers to slide onto the slide-out putting unnecessary strain and weight on their unborn calves causing miscarriages and stillbirths? Why would they let any orca use the slide-out considering the weight is known to damage their internal organs?If SeaWorld were educational why would they show us WILD animals in cages performing ridiculous tricks for our ‘entertainment’? These are not natural wild behaviours - they are not natural behaviours at all. Why wouldn’t they sell wild orca tours or show educational videos?If SeaWorld were educational why would they allow us to see animals with extremely sensitive sonar being tortured by constant loud music, clapping and fireworks?I could go through a similar list of questions/facts for all animals kept at SeaWorld but, I think I’ve made my point.
SeaWorld are a number of things. Greedy and selfish to name just a few. But there’s one thing SeaWorld definitely isn’t: SeaWorld is not educational.Finally, this planet is not OURS. The oceans are not OURS. We are not the sole inhabitants of this earth. The things that live here with us do not belong to us. They are not here to provide us with entertainment. If you want to see an orca in the flesh go out to sea - wait. Don’t spend a ridiculous amount of money to sit in a stadium watching these beautiful animals perform mindless tricks instead of swimming hundreds of miles in the open ocean.

Wildlife photographer Dafna Ben Nun, braved temperatures of minus 2 degrees to capture the beautiful creatures in the White Sea, north-west Russia. She even got kisses! She spent almost an hour in the water with the two female whales who were very curious and funny. Beluga whales are currently critically endangered in Alaska and numbers has been severely reduced in numbers over the last several decades [Article] [Video]
It is absolutely wonderful to see these Belugas in their natural environment, where they belong! Look at how happy they look!
