An Ayurvedic Approach Towards COVID-19
As the world’s leading group of scientists and researchers race to find an antidote to fight the novel coronavirus, which has infected over 35 million people globally, there’s a pressing need for a workaround to beat the virus. From experimental medicines to alternate therapies, all forms of treatments are being studied.
Using herbs for illness isn’t a novel idea. For thousands of years, herbs like licorice (nadyapaan), ginger, and ephedra (somlata) have been used to treat respiratory infections like the flu and pneumonia. Some remedies, like forsythia, were put to the test for SARS and found to be somewhat effective in laboratory studies.
Concept of Immunity:
Human beings are born with a basic immune system that is weak. Through constant interaction with the microbes in our environment, and within our gut, we learn to fight against new a microbe, which helps to strengthen the immune system.
Immunity, as we understand it through modern medicine, is the function of certain cells, enzymes, and Homeostasis chemicals that attack pathogens and prevent them from creating diseases. This concept of invasion from micro-organisms and a biological defense system against it led to the development of the range of antibiotics and vaccines in the 20th century. Various developments in the last decade, like the emergence of auto-immune issues, widespread antibiotic resistance in microbes, and wider understanding of friendly bacteria and its functions, especially inside our gut, have forced us to rethink the unidirectional concept of the immune system.
Factors that act negatively on our Immunity:
• Imbalanced Diet – A diet that is not nutritionally balanced and supportive of dosha balance. Excess intake of processed sugars and additives for artificial flavoring is known to weaken the immune system. Eating disorders like anorexia can also lead to nutritional imbalance and weak immunity.
• Excessive Alcohol Intake – Physicians are already aware of the impact of alcohol on resistance and recovery from illness. Researchers have also shown that regular alcohol intake can weaken immune systems effectiveness against common pathogens.
• Irregular Sleep – Constantly varying sleep patterns, lack of sleep or interrupted sleep.
• High stress – increases the cortisol level in blood and increased blood pressure reduces the focus on immune system nourishment.
• Obesity – Excess weight gain can itself be an indicator of an imbalance in metabolism and hormonal functions. Lack of exercise has a lot of negative effects on immunity.
• Chronic medications – Long term use of antibiotics and certain other medications are also proven to be detrimental for immunity.
• Dehydration – Various studies have shown that not having enough liquid intake can reduce our effectiveness of the body’s resistance mechanism.
Ayurvedic Remedies for Improving Immunity:
• Start the day with Ginger tea and Tulsi to strengthen and cleanse the upper respiratory tract. • The use of turmeric and black pepper in the meals will help you to boost immunity and reduce toxins in your body. Turmeric can be taken as a drink with milk. • Take 15 ml of Amla juice daily. Optionally, take pomegranate or any type of berries to supply extra antioxidants and strengthen the immunity. • Drink plenty of warm water. Staying well hydrated will keep the throat and mucous membrane clean, supporting its action as a good barrier to all microbes.
While researches are still being carried on, we do know that ashwagandha is considered to be one of the most superior and powerful Ayurvedic remedies, used for many purposes and benefits. It is quite effective in fighting common ailments like cold and cough and some respiratory ailments, which make it a potent remedy in fighting some viral diseases as well.
Regularly consuming Ashwagandha can also supercharge your immunity. Experts actually say that increasing the dosage of ashwagandha during a sudden spike or onset of a cold can work really well in healing the body. Ashwagandha helps to calm the brain, reduce swelling (inflammation), lower blood pressure, and alter the immune system.
Panchkarma Therapy - Best Ayurveda Center for Panchkarma Therapy
In Ayurveda, several remedies have been suggested to keep the mind and body fit. Of these, Panchkarma is very important. How the use of Panchkarma can reduce the problems of body and mind to a great extent.
Ayurveda says that the 5 elements (Earth, Water, Fire, Sky and Air) of a human body are made of those elements, the universe is also made of those elements. When there is a disturbance in the ratio of these 5 elements in the body, problems arise. Ayurveda brings these elements back to normalcy and in this way, diseases are diagnosed. Panchakarma is performed for arthritis, paralysis, stomach diseases, sinus, migraine, cervical spondylitis, sciatica, BP, diabetes, liver disorders, joint pain, eye and intestinal diseases etc.
Panchakarma is considered a special medical method of Ayurveda. It is used for detoxification and rejuvenation of the body. By this medical method, all three physical defects: Arthritis, Bile and Cough are brought to a normal state and are removed from the body. Different types of processes are used to remove various chemical and toxic substances from various body parts and contaminating the blood. There are five karmas in these processes. That's why this particular method is called 'Panchkarma'.
The 5 main Pradhan Karmas that come under Panchakarma:
1. Vamana: This is one of the major treatment procedures of panchakarma. It is medical emesis with the help of certain herbs mainly for kaphaja disorders. Vamana is not done only in patients, but may also be done in normal persons for keeping them healthy, especially in Vasant Ritu. It is one of the most effective ways of eliminating toxins from the body. In diseased conditioned, it is beneficial in loss of appetite, the heaviness of the body, laziness, lack of interest in work, dullness, cold, coryza etc. It is also indicated in chronic asthma etc.
2. Virechana: The above procedure focusses on cleansing the toxins which have accumulated in the liver and gall bladder. Gastro-intestinal cleansing is also achieved through this karma. On a general note, Virechana is usually performed after Vamana and its duration is variable depending on the disease/type of patient. Certain medications are used in order to direct toxins out of the body through the rectum.
3. Asthapana Basti: This procedure is similar to anuvasana basti, but the medicine is given in the form of decoction and the dose of the medicine is also higher than anuvasana basti. This basti is useful in abdominal pain, distension, tumors, gout, obstructed semen, gas, or feces, enlarged scrotum, urinary stones, amenorrhea, or severe Vata disorders, pain and swelling of joints. It provides health to the healthy and gives strength to the tissues that are weak.
4. Anuvasana Basti: This is the administering of oil-based medicines through the anal route. It is one of the major detoxifying procedures of Ayurveda. It is mainly used in vata disorders which are not associated with ama. It helps in eradicating toxins from the body thus cleansing it. It is also indicated in Paralysis, Arthritis, Backache, Constipation, Irritable bowel syndrome, Atrophic conditions of the muscles, neurological conditions, flatulence and bloating etc. It bestows Lightness of the body, oleation of the body, Improvement in the activities of the nervous system, ease of movements of the joints and reduction in pains and aches.
5. Nasyam: Nasyam involves the administration of medicines via the nose. According to Ayurveda, the nose is the gateway leading to the head region. Thus all the medicines that are given through the nose have a direct effect on the head and the senses. Nasyam is widely used for problems of the head, eye or nervous system. A careful doctor's hand is very necessary for this process as the medicines are directly inserted into the nose. The experienced doctors at the Shreenivas Ayurvedic Centre give a wonderful nasyam treatment to patients.
