the last goodbye
dracofade:
WHAT SHE SAW WAS DIFFERENT THAN THE HELL HE HAD EXPERIENCED. His princess, the girl he’s sworn both fealty and life to - ending her life by a blade. With no other attendant, he felt responsible for the scene he saw - a figure in her shape, driving a blade into itself. Yet, it would seem - no matter how loud he called for her, his voice wouldn’t reach anyone’s ears. It wouldn’t even reach his own and that was when he knew. WHATEVER HELL HE’S IN, he can’t let her die on him. It would be a repeat of that time (the time of his mother’s death; their first meeting) , if he ever allowed her to perish when he could have stopped it–
HE CAN SCREAM, but a warrior doesn’t mourn openly for a lost princess. HE WAS DAMNED! He knew that ever since he woke up in this vile world. He was no saint; he would end up in hell no matter how he made up for his faults. After all, why else would he be CURSED to weaken over lives he’s taken? To learn the meaning of strength, yet he refused to take another life out of the fear he wouldn’t be able to be STRONG ENOUGH. And look what happened over his hesitation: a sight he cannot un-see. The sight of a country’s saintly princess, taking her own life over a body – WHY WOULD SHE NEED TO TAKE HER OWN LIFE OVER A SOLDIER? Yet, even as the screen doors open - he’s met with a pitiful sight: The princess, appearing as though she was a mere child, once more. The scene before him was entirely different - how could this be?
and for what felt like an eternity, she is alone. wracked with sobs that carry farther than she can see in these empty halls, she curls in on herself. her clothes are dirtied and crumpled with her form across the floor, her hair fallen from their usual kept appearance- but she is blind to her own disarray, as occupied as she is with her grief over the loss of her subjects. It is only with the flurry of movement, a sudden rush of air and sound that she raises her haid, and it is to a sight she never would never have thought to see.
Kurogane.
with a cry, she rises to her feet, stumbling slightly over cloth in her harried race to his form, but it matters not when her arms wrap around his form and she’s openly sobbing again, touching his shoulders, his face, his lips in her relief to see him, here and alive. what she saw- it must have nothing more than a vision she convinces herself, a bad dream. if she’s here, if he’s here- everything will be alright.
it will be.
she will make it so. she will never allow a future such as that to occur. not while she’s alive, not now, and not ever.
@dracofade
run. run. run.
and she’s running, fleeing, in a mad dash from her pursuers as their rage crashes against her like the flowing tide, receding only to rise again so much angrier than before. with her robes gathered haphazardly in her arms, tears obscuring the path before her and barely feet away from the fanatical mob- she looks nothing like the princess she was, collected and composed.
when she’d woken, up, she’d thought- she’d thought it only a bad dream a nightmare of things yet to come, and yet. yet. somehow, it was so much worse than she’d feared. her mind continues to revisit the way his corpse looked, barely human and monstrous in its gore. if it were not for the voices urging her along, her instinctual panic of move, get out, now, now, now ! ! ! she would have surely succumbed to the mob in her despair; but she cannot.
and as she’s hurried into the room, into the doorway by her attendants and those that still believe, a part of her wishes to turn back, to face their rage head on and what she deserves. because she’d done it. not only had she sent kurogane off to die, she’d abandoned her country, everyone who believed in her- she’d left them all behind in a fit of despair. even if it was a dream, she still- she’d still chosen to do so, to leave them all behind in a fit of despair.
unforgivable.
so when the door shuts behind her, leading out into a strange hall- she couldn’t. she couldn’t. stumbling to a stop, her exhausted legs finally give in and she rests the back of her head against the closed door. her maniacal energy that allowed her to escape her pursuers for even that long had abandoned her, and now she slumped, empty, in the middle of the unknown hall.
she deserved to die.
ONCE UPON A TIME, there was a lost soul. Wearily wearily, it traversed through this endless world: Complete white greeted it at every twist and turn, and the distant sounds of cicadas, waves, and hissing only drove it further into madness. “Where am I?” Wondered the lost soul. “Did I not die?” came the questions, only to be left unanswered and to linger as everlasting as this world was. Again and again had the lost soul taken steps forward, their direction aimless and stripped of their own freedom to make the decision not to.
「Go on, go on,」 said the voices in their ears. They had made promises of salvation, of freedom, of the ending of their suffering if they only kept going a little while longer.
The lost soul followed and followed, until coming upon a door. The voices rung clearer than before:
「We shall grant your wish. We shall grant your desire for life in the world from once you came.」
Mockingly mockingly, had the snakes before the soul hissed once they had entered. Serpents always tempted, and as stories foretold, the lost soul had wandered into their monstrous garden. Their fruit promised knowledge and fulfilled desire, and again and again, had they tricked someone so foolish. But the serpents did not lie.
Those who entered their game would get their wish and their desire fulfilled – if they were to succeed. Magic always came with a price: Would you be willing to kill those around you, if it meant that you would get your heart’s greatest yearning? It seemed once more, you would have no choice.
