"Anita…!"
Abel’s pupils seemed to dilate as EDO’s words settled in the air, lacking any feeling though the monotonous words seemed to evoke more emotion than many had before. The terrible image of her crumpled form and wrinkly face contorted with fear was imprinted in the boy’s mind, it seemed. Had he been able, he would have leapt into the screen and wrestled the guns from the hands of any number of the bastards. But that was, quite obviously, an impossibility.
The thought of his parents had not so much as crossed the swordsman’s mind — in fact, although he never would have dared to utter such a thing out loud, he probably wouldn’t mind if his mother and father happened to get in a terrible accident while he was away from home. But that was terribly ungrateful of him, wasn’t it? Abel scowled at himself and kicked at the floor, spitefully scuffing the toes to his previously shiny black dress shoes. As much as he would have enjoyed dwelling on the mutually bitter distaste which he felt for his parents, a much more pressing thought was currently coming to mind. And that was of his dear nanny, Anita.
Oh, the fear she must have felt while being held at gunpoint, being shouted at in a language which she did not understand. And Abel couldn’t help but feel like… it was his fault. Had he never decided to come to this school, a petty plan to impress his father, surely Anita’s life never would have been put into such a treacherous jeopardy. Face reddened with anger, Abel rapidly blinked away the tears that threatened to appear in the corners of his eyes. He turned away from the screen and crossed his arms, throwing a mental temper tantrum. It wasn’t fair, what they were doing! It just wasn’t!
"…I will be in the Circus. If anyone wishes to join me, your company will be fondly welcomed. And… that was sarcasm, if you couldn’t tell. Leave me alone, ‘kay?" Abel announced loudly and with a trembling lip, bowing his head once and furthermore stomping out of the room.
The boy walked stiffly towards the circus with just one thing on his mind: juggling fire. Wasn’t it typical to do the most reckless things when you were feeling the most forlorn? Perhaps burning off his entire head of hair would inspire some sympathy within him, or manage to eradicate some amount of the fury and guilt which he was currently feeling. …Or maybe it would just end in a bald head and a pair of badly scorched ears. He stood in the doorway to the room, still for a moment, as though mentally preparing himself for the stupidity which he was about to put forward. This was most surely destined to end badly. When met with this realization, however, Abel merely shrugged his shoulders. Perhaps that would be for the best.
After the announcement, Natsu felt the need to get out of that room. Not in an attempt to be alone per se, but to escape from all the explosive emotions and outbursts and tears. It broke her heart, it made her want to weep even more for everybody elses parents as well as her own, and most of all it was making it difficult to collect herself and go and try to think sensibly about this. What had Yamirin said? Hope of the future and all - focus on that.
For no real reason, Natsu exited out of the left door of the auditorium, into the stupid luck and skill games area. She didn't want to be here either, she realized, looking around, and instead pressed forward through the bowling alley and the arcade until the only thing standing between her and the next area was the swordfighter in their class.
Honestly, Natsu didn't like him much.
Natsu wasn't a fan of his snobby, better-than-thou nature and prissy attitude, and she didn't like the tone he'd taken with her during the last trial, but... That didn't mean she couldn't feel sympathy for him. She'd seen him make his exit from the group before her, and like most everybody else, he'd seemed distraught. For once, it was safe enough to think that they were going through the same thing - he must be scared for his parents too! Natsu thought, miserably staring at his back.
"Abel-kun?"
She tried tentatively, with more of a choke in her voice than she'd expected, and her throat already felt cold and raw.
"Are you..." Of course he wasn't okay. What a stupid question.
"...Was it your parents too? Do you want to, uhm. Talk about it."
Foul Play [REACTION]
Natsu felt her blood run cold and her stomach turn to ice when the moment came for her parents to be shown on screen. Until that point, some little part of her had hoped that they'd make a mistake, that two people completely unfamiliar to her would appear instead and somehow she'd be the exception. She wasn't.
It was strange seeing her parents like that, even if it was just for a split second. Her mother had clearer and brighter eyes than Natsu had seen in years, perhaps thanks to the terror that stared back out at her, and her father - he was there. As small and as slight as she remembered. It had been a long time since she'd seen the two of them stand side by side, and now they were kneeling together before guns. It was completely unfair, it was awful, it was borderline ironic in the most disgusting way. The short moment they'd been on screen had burned themselves into Natsu's mind, and as it turned to show the next poor friends or family of someone here, she turned away from the TV, hand over her mouth.
It was her fault they were there.
She felt like she was going to be sick. She felt some immense pressure pushing out in her head and throat and stomach from inside like she was going to implode on herself and vomit all at once. She'd have loved to cry now - an immediate release of this sudden energy curdling inside her, something that would help her clear her mind - but not a single tear came out.
Breathe. She reminded herself to breathe before her lungs exploded, and tried to focus. Could she do that for her parents? Kill somebody and risk her own life for it? Is that what her parents would want their child to do?
A Show of Strength // 07 // Natsu
Oh, come on, was he really going to be getting a lecture. He rolled his eyes at the words. He put down the hammer and crossed his arms in front of him - a slightly less easy-going stance - and fixed Natsu in his blue stare.
"Funny enough," Nagamasa said, "I’m pretty good at judgin’ how much a person can take. It’s almost like this ain’t the first time I’ve done this." Sarcasm was displaying his maturity, for sure. "I had no mind to kill her at all, y’know. If I had, she’d be dead, but since I wasn’t, she’s not, y’see? I know what I’m doin’."
He let out a whoosh of an exhale. The big meta strength game was close, and he leaned back onto it with a dull thump.
“‘N what’s this about expectin’ shit of me,” he remarked flatly, “You can’t expect nothin’ o’ me. You don’t know jack shit about me, jus’ the same as I don’t know a thing abut you. Fer all you know I really am a pirate, a smugglin’, thievin’, murderin’ lowlife who really does kill people in fistfights ‘n is just holdin’ back here. Or maybe I’m jes’ a kid who likes boats ‘n has a bit of a temper. You don’t know, so how can you ‘expect’ anything o’ me?”
Natsu could feel her face flame up red from annoyance, both from his easy going, callous attitude regarding the subject and his patronizing sarcasm. Knows what he's doing? Nobody's in control when the temper gets hot and fists start swinging! How couldn't he realize the potential for accidents, for miscalculation, for just taking too hard a swing?
"I can have basic expectations on another human being, Nagamasa-kun! And one of those expectations are that you don't go breaking somebody's ribs in a place where we're all, like, already hanging in a life or death situation! I mean, is that too much to ask for?"
Tears pricked at her eyes, a physical response rather than an emotional one (for once) and she gave an 'Ugh!' of frustration, holding the jacket sleeve to her eye. Any strong emotion and the waterworks turned themselves on, but this time she'd try and will her body to suck it back in. Enough anger should be able to do that, right?
"Like, this situation is stressful enough without grown people acting like kids! Honestly!"
She refolded her arms and looked away from him, still fumingly red in the face but focusing her glare on a speck on the ground a few metres away instead.
A Show of Strength // 07 // Natsu
What did he think he was doing? “I think I’m playin’ with this weird hammer game, that’s what,” Nagamasa replied flatly. It was true.
Oh, wait, that was what she meant. The head of the hammer planted firmly on the ground, he leaned easily on the handle, not showing any discomfort at all with the topic.
"Yeah, I beat her up," he shrugged, as if it was completely normal. Actually, where Nagamasa was from, it was completely normal. Fistfights were just a fact of life. Then, childishly, he added, "In my defense, she started it."
"C’mon, it ain’t like I just go ‘round whackin’ people upside the head willy-nilly, or anything," he stated, as if that made it any better, "C’mon, this kinda thing only happens if the situation calls for it. I got nothin’ ‘gainst Shoujiki-san at all, b’fore or after our little scuffle." Well, he would have something against her if she got up in his business again, but a quick brawl like that would let her know that it wasn’t cool to do that. Same went for the rest of people here. Hell, he’d even take on that tree, Yuugiri.
"Anyway, what’ve you been up to, Natsu-chan?"
Was he really admitting to it just like that? Natsu's face creased up into a frown, and she felt herself flare up in irritation. You couldn't just go around having fights and then act like it wasn't a big deal! The fact that he didn't even dislike Setsuko was even more disturbing, and made Nagamasa seem just a bit more dangerous to be around - and not in that appealing rogueish way, either.
"Like, who started it isn't even the point, Nagamasa-kun! I mean, like, sure, Setsuko-chan is a pretty physically strong girl, but you still totally wrecked her- I mean! What if it was someone else? There are lots of people here who couldn't take what you dished out."
Natsu had always believed that being strong meant that you had to be more careful and act responsibly - set a good example, as it were! Nagamasa seemed deadset on acting out the opposite, and it was bothering Natsu to no end.
"...Like, I'm... Just trying to say, it's so easy to totes overestimate how much damage somebody can take before crossing the line, right? I mean... Four people are already dead, nobody needs an accident to happen."
"I just mean, you know. I'd have expected better from you, given the situation and all."

[♪♪♪]
The first thing Nagamasa did was have dinner. Hey, hadn’t Sachie and Tokaji died for this? It would practically be disrespecting their memory if he didn’t grab a bite to eat!
The food was disgustingly deep fried and he was sure that after a few days he’d be about ready to kill someone for some real food but right now nothing mattered besides the fact that there was food. And water. Damn, he’d missed water.
Well, once that was all done, he meandered through the weird-as-fuck carnival rooms. He had never been to a carnival before. He enjoyed the new surroundings from a purely academic point of view: they were completely alien to him and therefore quite interesting. It was noteworthy that he seemed completely unperturbed by the creepiness of the area, just as he had seemed completely unperturbed by the two deaths just hours before.
The two victims of today’s atrocities were not yet cold in their graves, but by all appearances, Nagamasa had completely moved on.
His meanderings uncovered a room of little skill games. One, with a sign calling participants to test their strength!, had caught the sailor’s eye. He frowned at it. Hell, he was the strongest one of them here. If anyone was going to beat this game, it was him.
He hoisted up the hammer - heavy, sure, but not the heaviest he’d ever dealt with.
He sucked in a breath and, putting his heavy upper body muscles to work, swung the thing above his head and brought it down with a crash. The bell at the top rang loudly to celebrate, and he set the thing down with a hammer, satisfied.
Grinning to himself, he turned away from the game and spotted another person in the room with him.
“‘Hoy,” he said by way of a greeting, “How long ya been watchin’?” Not that he minded, of course.
Totally a while after the trial, Natsu finally decided to drag herself out of her room where she'd tiredly been hiding out, unwilling to investigate this particular area. She had thought it was awful and morbid in the worst of ways, a mockery of poor Sachie-chan and a painful reminder that their lives were just being toyed with. That opinion still held strong, but her need for social interaction eventually outweighed her general disdain of the place.
Walking across the rooms, she opened one of the doors to find a sight that made her heart near stop. She couldn't quite see from this angle what he was swinging at, but that was Nagamasa- and he looked fucking pissed! Was he in another fight? And that hammer - was she about to witness a murder?!
"Ah-!!"
Wait, people's heads don't go ding when they get hit. She sure was getting jumpy in this place... Still, she'd been planning on giving Nagamasa some Words since she heard about that little incident with Setsuko, so with her best friendly-but-stern expression, Natsu puffed her chest up to stand tall and marched over to him.
"Nagamasa-kun! Like, what do you think you're doing?"
...Wait, wait. That wasn't how she was supposed to start this - for starters, that was a bit too aggressive and she didn't even give him a chance to get to know what the topic was. She sighed, folded her arms, shook her head and tried again.
"I mean, uhm. Like? I totes heard about what happened with you and Setsuko-chan? And, like. I'm mega-dissappointed."
Important || REACTION [OPEN]
It took her a long time to find the solution to that damned puzzle. Way too long by her own accounts - in reality she spent about three hours in total, not including the time spent giving up in frustration and walking elsewhere - but finally, with an elated gasp she saw the solution suddenly clear infront of her. With a proud, nearing on smug giggle, she slammed the peg down into the slot with more force than neccessary and stared intently at the prize slot as it opened.
"...What the fuck?"
Important? In this situation, that could mean that this pill was everything from poison to... Well, not poison. Nothing she was keen on ingesting without being sure what she was holding onto, at least, so instead of opening it she pocketed it, standing up and frowning down at the puzzle.
"Well, that's, like. A mystery."
Still... Even if she didn't know what the pill did, she sure hoped nobody missed out on getting them in case it was vital for their survival. Was helping other people allowed...? She'd have to make sure everybody got the chance to sit down and try it out, at least.
Turning around towards the entrance as she heard somebody enter, she met them with a big, warm smile and a wave, quickly bouncing over before they had the chance to escape.
"Uhm, hi! Are you, like, here to do the puzzle too? I'm so sure you can do it, like, I mean. Even I could."
"Or, uhm... Sorry, did you, like, already finish it, maybe?"

"…Mogaki."
Yamirou offered pointedly in response to the casual use of hir first name, albeit too nonchalantly to betray any real sort of malice. Sie glanced up for a moment, offering a single magnanimous nod before sie returned to hir inspections.
Sie was no cold-reader when it came to emotions, but what was immediately apparent was the brightness of Natsu’s voice. Either she was entirely oblivious of the situation that surrounded her, or she was making a very valiant effort to convince herself of that same fact. Neither pursuit seemed particularly useful to Yamirou — but by the same token, sie felt no urgent need to interfere with them either. What concerned hir far more was her actual words.
“‘Only to be expected’? Tch. Don’t you ever expect murder as a matter of course. The one saving grace of this farcical congregation was meant to be that we were the hope of the future — that bomber included. I count myself lucky that it was him, but I’d still expect better from humanity, and especially us. Never mind this… external hell.”
Seemingly unaware of how entirely dissonant — and perhaps, more terrifyingly, idealistic — that last sentiment had come off, Yamirou withdrew the cigar sie had found from hir pockets once more.
“Speaking of. A remnant, perhaps.”
All that being said, Yamirou crossed to the stage platform that housed the DJ set-up, trailing hir gaze along the floor all the while, and peered under it. Sie wasn’t about to get on hir hands and knees — perish the thought — but sie seemed to recall something about a storage space beneath when viewed from the right angle. Perhaps there was something to be found in its unlikely shade.
One of the last people Natsu would have expected such a hopeful sounding response, albeit in an agressively dissappointed way, might have been Yamirou. It made her feel vaguely ashamed and embarrassed for being so pessimistic. While it wasn't a feeling that was so easy to completely shake with a harsh little speech, it helped. She nodded, took a deep breath and let it out, closing her eyes for a bit. Yamirou was right, it was important to not accept what was happening around them.
When Natsu opened her eyes again, something in the trashcan caught her gaze. A speck of white in this dusty dim room, and she reached down to pick it up, holding it delicately between her fingers.
"Urk-!"
Oh no, not more blood! While not squeamish, it was still an unwelcome surprise to see, but possibly something important. She glanced over to the cigar Yamirou was holding, not quite recognizing it. Tokaji had smoked cigarettes, right?
"...Who's do you think that is? Did Tokaji-kun smoke those? And, uhm. Whose do you think this is...?"
Natsu motioned at the blood stained napkin she was holding, following Yamirou over the floor - because really, what else did she have to do? - and glanced upwards at the incredibly tacky disco ball hanging from the roof. Not that it made sense for anything to be up there, but...
"Uhm... Is there anything under there?"
the tomb-keeper's secret [investigation/natsu]
The time for paranoia had firmly passed. As all strategists knew, there was no fixed answer as to whether the best defence was a good offence or vice versa — and Yamirou intended to deliver both with a mighty vengeance.
It was far too late to re-enter the studio without losing some kind of face (and sie was clever, if not vain, enough to understand the tactical importance of keeping up appearances at a time like this), so for the moment, Yamirou resolved hirself to do the next best thing. The adjacent room sie had found hirself in, strangely, had been the exact room which sie had promised hirself sie was not going to set foot in for the entirety of their stay in this particular circle of hell: the dreaded nightclub.
Dark but for the incessant glow of the neon floor, the room almost felt like an insult now. Of course, it had been insulting to both their collective intelligence and their collective sense of solemnity from the very beginning, but its proximity to Tokaji’s corpse cranked the narrative insolence of it all to a proverbial eleven. Although the room was currently silent, the flooring continued to flash; squinting against the main part of the room, Yamirou turned and made way to the bar.
Sie hadn’t been on speaking terms with Tokaji before his presumably mirror-based passing, but somehow he seemed the type to frequent such an area. Perhaps it was the sharp reek of cigarette smoke that had followed him — too many people here, for a matter of fact — even throughout their more professional congregations, or perhaps Yamirou was just being exactly as judgemental as usual.
Either way, Yamirou made hir way over to the bar and inspected the countertop; almost as a second thought, sie then opened the storage within and peered in disdainfully for any remnants of the crime. Whatever was to be gleaned from the bar’s tenebrous mysteries, drinking was still as exactly as disgusting a pursuit as always, Yamirou noted.
After having had her little cry in the studio, openly and shamelessly, Natsu drew herself up, brushed herself down and cleared her throat as if nothing had happened, and as if she didn't have black mascara streaks down her cheeks.
There wasn't anything of note in here, not that she could see - that said, it wasn't like she had any clue of what would be useful anyway. Instead, she found herself walking to the nightclub next door, for no other reason than this was the last place she'd seen Tokaji, when the last trial had ended. It might be too much to hope that there'd be a clue in here, or that he'd even been here before it happened, but it was as good a place to start as any.
With a glance to the door handle, she pushed it open and found that she wasn't alone in having come here first. Yamirou was here too and honestly, there was worse company to have than Yamirou. Plus, sie seemed like the type who might actually be able to piece something like this together.
"Yamirou! Like, you're here too!"
She brightly cried out, and smiled like there wasn't the corpse of one of their dead classmates in the next room over. Closing the door behind herself, she glanced down at the trash can by the entrance before turning to Yamirou with a bit more of a melancholic look.
"...It's only to be expected what happened, isn't it? I mean... Even so, it's still. You know. Awful."

thank u tayb for asking this so i had a reason to draw it. lots of fun
waterworks [TASK 6] reaction
Not again.
Despite the motive being so extreme, somewhere Natsu had been sure this wouldn't happen again, kept telling herself that. Of course it'd happen again, though. How naïve of her to think otherwise.
Now Tokaji was dead. She hadn't really liked him, hadn't been close friends and hadn't even talked a lot with him, but she still felt tears prick at her eyes seeing his lifeless body up against the mirror. In all honesty she'd probably have cried for anyone who'd been killed here, stranger or not. In a way she'd sort of been counting on Tokaji to help them get out of here. He was the one with experience that could help them out of here, and he was one of the few of them that didn't even seem worried about their situation. Dead.
Tears leaked from her eyes and, once more, smudged her eyeliner and mascara downwards, and she sniffed, hiding her face with her hands for the few minutes it took for her to regain something close to composure. At least, as long as it took until the waterworks turned off.
At the very least, thanks to this murder they'd be able to eat and drink again. At least that was something.
