l’esprit de l’escalier [les-pree de less-kay-ee-yeh]
(noun) An untranslatable French word, which occurs after the dissatisfaction one experiences in, generally, an argument, unable to produce a “comeback.” L’esprit de l’escalier is the moment one finally thinks of a witty remark far too late, after the opportunity has passed. This is why the French call it the staircase wit, indicating that one thought of that perfect retort on his or her way out.
literally: esprit (wit) + escalier (stairs) = staircase wit

Happiness for a reason is just another form of misery because the reason can be taken away from us at any time.

Now You Know (Source)
For in our era all are isolated into individuals, each retires solitary within his burrow, each withdraws from the other, conceals himself and that which he possesses, and ends by being rejected of men and by rejecting them. He amasses wealth in solitariness, thinking: how strong I am now and how secure, yet he does not know, the witless one, that the more he amasses, the further he will sink into suicidal impotence. For he has become accustomed to relying upon himself alone has isolated himself from the whole as an individual, has trained his soul not to trust in help from others, in human beings and mankind, and is fearful only only of losing his money and the privileges he has acquired. In every place today the human mind is mockingly starting to lose its awareness of the fact that a person’s true security consists not in his own personal, solitary effort, but in the common integrity of human kind.

The books that the world calls immoral are books that show the world its own shame.
Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray
There is a stubbornness about me that never can bear to be frightened at the will of others. My courage always rises at every attempt to intimidate me.
Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice
Do something instead of killing time, because time is killing you.
Paulo Coelho
The man who lies to himself and listens to his own lie comes to such a pass that he cannot distinguish the truth within him, or around him, and so loses all respect for himself and for others. And having no respect he ceases to love, and in order to occupy and distract himself without love he gives way to passions and coarse pleasures, and sinks to bestiality in his vices, all from continual lying to other men and to himself.

We're here! | Rika | Reaction/Open
Hm. Manipulating others into giving ‘you’ money? Rika wasn’t sure if she’d meant ‘you’ in a general sense or her, specifically. Did Reiri think she was a fortune teller? That would be funny!
"Well, it’s not much more manipulation than being some sort of entertainer, isn’t it? And sometimes good fortunes can make people have a more positive outlook on life!"
It’s not like Rika actually believed in fortune telling, and she honestly knew very little about it. But getting your fortune told could be entertaining, and wasn’t that what people paid for? She had no idea.
"And woooowww, five languages!? Is it hard to keep them all straight? I don’t know why the fish is red, which fish are you talking about? And if you haven’t been hired as an interpreter yet, you’ll definitely be able to get tons of jobs after we go to Hope’s Peak! Aren’t you excited, Fujiaki-san?"
It occurred to Rika that Reiri’s apparent lack of excitement might have less to do with the topic and more to do with her practically being interrogated.
"Am I, ah, asking too many questions? Sorry if I am, it’s just…! I’m really excited to get to know everyone!"
Reiri just stared at Rika for a second as if she had just said the stupidest thing she ever could.
"An entertainer? For a more positive outlook? It's false hope. They're giving the people who visit them false hope. Not just that though, people are paying them good money to be given false hope. They prey on the desperate and when they're confronted about it they just pull out some bullshit about how at least they were happy."
Well there did seem to be quite a bit of passion there though quite likely not at all what the other girl was looking for. After a second though she seem to calm down.
"Yes, five. Though no, not really. As for the fish I simply had no other clue what to say, as I said I'm not the best at producing French aloud. I translate books for the most part and didn't spend a great deal of time on it. I also do not really wish to work as an interpreter, I would simply be able to if required."
She sighed, what an annoying girl.
"Woah, you really think" She said sarcastically, rolling her eyes, "Honestly your tactics are rather lacking."

We're here! | Rika | Reaction/Open
Reiri-san seemed positively determined not to enjoy life in any way whatsoever. And maybe it was true that some talents were more… talent-y than others, but still! Rika tilted her head slightly.
“Well, even the pseudosciences take skill, don’t you think? Anyone can be a bad fortune teller, but some are better than others! So there’d still be competition, even if it’s more about making other believe something over actually looking into the future. But I do have to admit, being an SHSL Translator sounds incredibly interesting? How many languages do you know? I gotta say, I only know a bit of French, myself. Do you do more speaking or writing? Have you ever had a job as an interpreter? How much competition is there in you field?”
Reiri scoffed again, what an idiot. Really she couldn't believe she had to explain this all to her.
"Yes, feel proud of manipulating others into giving you money, what an amazing skill."
She rolled her eyes, laying the sarcasm on pretty thick, maybe that would finally be what get her to understand, Reiri antagonizing her.
"Slow down there, is that first bit really considered a question? No. It isn't. I know five including Japanese, the others are English, French, Icelandic, and Russian, <why is the fish red?>. Not actually the best at producing French aloud like that but as you said you do know a little French. I mostly translate literature, books, hence the languages that I know, though if you do need an interpreter I am capable. I've never actually been hired as one though. I'm not entirely sure about the rest of the field though, mostly having worked out of my small town and the school I went to."
