After my playthrough of V3 I couldn’t help but notice a decent amount of fodder for trans girl Shuichi headcanons.

for the longest time i've really disliked how people talk about shuichi's idolisation of kaito and i think i've finally pinpointed the reason why. it feels like there's no grey area. either shuichi knows kaito for who he is already with no work and no conflict, or shuichi doesn't know kaito at all and his perception of his best friend is based entirely in fiction, on this... facade, kaito puts up.
and i kind of resent the implications of that! kaito does lie. he lies a lot, through his ftes and throughout the game, disguising every hint of weakness and telling tall tales about his childhood (that are clearly based on games he played with his friends) to seem more like a hero, but... it makes me sad when people talk like shuichi doesn't know kaito at all. shuichi, first of all, is not completely blind to kaito's flaws; throughout his ftes, shuichi is fully aware of what an absolute clown kaito is, and YES, that kaito is outright lying to him. there are even times when kaito speaks for shuichi, or goes at something too aggressively, and shuichi remarks on it in his narration. shuichi acknowledges kaito as a person with his own way of doing things and his own downsides.
the canonical WEAKNESS of saimota, that i feel nobody talks about in specific enough terms, is that shuichi doesn't realise how insecure kaito is, or how much kaito needs his help and reassurance. kaito is a person with low self esteem so he projects to disguise that; shuichi assumes he really is just as arrogant as he presents, and doesn't need help being propped up. shuichi assumes that kaito is secure-- and probably assumes that, even if kaito did need help, it would be from someone who isn't shuichi, who shuichi views as so weak and cowardly he needs to rely on his friends to prop him up.
but to say that shuichi doesn't know kaito at all? that really doesn't sit well with me. it implies that everything kaito shows to shuichi is a lie, that kaito is never being honest when he talks about his passions or the things that he wants to do, that he cares about. kaito shows a lot of himself to shuichi, he talks about his childhood games and his aspirations, he talks about communication and shows a truer, more mature and genuine part of himself than he shows to a lot of people. he never told shuichi about his illness because he didn't want shuichi to worry about him, and thus their relationship has an imbalance. he needed shuichi to see him as a hero and grew restless and jealous when he felt like shuichi no longer needed him in the same way-- but he still showed himself. kaito isn't lying when he puts himself forward as a hero, or when he takes on sidekicks and tries to help people, or when he encourages his friends. that's how he shows his love. and that silly goofy posturing about being the luminary of the stars, that's just because he's a dramatic theatre kid. it's a fundamental part of his character and the kaito that shuichi knows who does that is just as much kaito momota as the dying, vulnerable kaito who kokichi saw in the hangar.
saimota is by far not a perfect relationship, especially as it is within the game, and if you read my other posts you know i'm extremely cognizant of their flaws and shortcomings, but i'm sick and tired of people acting like shuichi doesn't know kaito. he does. he doesn't know all of kaito, because kaito is scared to show shuichi his weaknesses-- but if you think that kaito is just his weaknesses, and that the version of himself that he is around shuichi is nothing more than a lie... then i have no idea how you can appreciate kaito at all.
this is a topic that is extremely personal to me. for the longest time, i felt like since i never told people about my depression and my feelings of loneliness, i wasn't showing them me. i was just putting on an act, and being disingenuous, and lying about who i truly was. but i've had enough therapy and support since then to realise that by showing the parts of me that i'm proud of, and by putting a conscious effort into interacting with people so i don't treat them in ways that are toxic or unhealthy, i'm not lying. i'm not faking or putting on a facade. i can be vulnerable with the people i love without the parts of me that i like being fake. you get what i mean? the me who makes jokes and tries to help h other people, the one who introduces all my friends to one another... they are just as much me as the me who sometimes can't get out of bed. and it's the same for kaito. the kaito who takes on his sidekicks and talks about belief and putting your mind into things is the same who suffered silently with an illness. they're both him, and any good portrayal of saimota should show him and shuichi getting to a point where shuichi can see both of those parts of him; but one isn't fake. one isn't a lie. kaito is a hero and he's a kid who deserves help. people can be scared and strong at the same time.

Meh art
sorry for the shit quality but i couldnt stop thinking about this
why rantaro amami does NOT have an incest kink (and i will destroy you 1v1 in hand to hand combat)
thought i’d start off the new amami blog with an analysis on rantaro amami’s love hotel! this has been collecting dust in my drafts for months and i decided it was finally time to bring it out and talk about it, because i personally love amami’s love hotel and it makes me depressed to see people misinterpreting it as something sexual.
in order for this analysis to make any sense, we need to first take a look at rantaro’s free time events, where he explains to shuichi what happened to his sisters.
in his fourth event, rantaro describes the loss of his youngest sister, one of the dearest people in his life. in his fifth, he reveals that he has eleven other sisters who were also lost around the world on a number of separate occasions, and asks that shuichi dedicate what may very well be the rest of his life to tracking them down. it’s clear right off the bat that this is something rantaro holds a lot of guilt about what happened to his sisters, as well as determination to find them, highlighted especially in lines like these:
so clearly, prior to the disappearance of his youngest sister, rantaro felt a lot of responsibility when it came to taking care of all his younger sisters. not only that, but he blames himself for their disappearances, whether or not it was actually his fault. rantaro opens up to shuichi very quickly, even asking him to travel the world with him for the rest of their lives after a few short conversations:
which suggests that he doesn’t have anyone else to help him look, or anyone else to even be close to. he tells shuichi this:
which implies that anyone else who is still in his life has already told him to give up on his search, leading him to hold his secrets in close to his chest. rantaro has nobody who understands. nobody who cares as much as he does, and nobody who he cares about like that in turn. all he has are memories of his twelve missing sisters, and, after salmon mode, a boy he just met who validated his feelings and agreed to help him find them.
which brings us to his love hotel. the beginning of the love hotel sets rantaro up as a tutor, or a teacher, which… i guess if you stop there, i can see why you’d say something about him wanting to be a teacher in a relationship with his student, but then rantaro follows it up with this:
which suggests that he and the kid he’s tutoring have formed a sort of sibling-like relationship. this is the ideal scenario of a man who lost twelve little sisters. a situation where he develops a close platonic bond like this again, where he gets to recreate that kind of close relationship, is obviously his ideal. but rantaro takes it further as the setting of the fantasy becomes clearer.
unlike maki’s fantasy, where her childhood best friend is still alive and there for her to hold, and kaito’s, where he’s a badass pilot with a homoerotic rival who always meets him exactly where he’s at, rantaro’s love hotel is more grounded in reality. when he says that he’s “leaving”, and that he can’t tell his student why, he’s obviously talking about his search for his sisters. even in his fantasies, the most important part of rantaro’s life, finding his sisters, it still creeps into the background. even with this new person who reminds him of a sibling, he has other responsibilities to fulfill; other sisters to find.
and then rantaro says this.
in rantaro’s fantasy, his “ideal” is a younger-sibling type character who he can keep safe, no matter what. somebody with whom he won’t repeat his past mistakes. someone who he can protect while still going out and searching for his sisters, someone who will not fall victim to what has happened to everyone else he’s ever loved. rantaro’s not looking for a romantic partner. i doubt the thought ever crosses his mind, even at the end of his salmon mode, where he and shuichi reaffirm their plans to travel the world together. all rantaro wants is to have a sibling who he can finally keep safe. someone who he can love in a similar way to how he loved his younger s,isters someone who won’t encourage him to give up, who he can just… protect.
so yeah stop saying he likes incest you fucking freaks
