As Latinas we are raised to have a self-sacrificing nature. We are expected to protect, nurture, and honor Latinos in ways that we know will never be reciprocated. We walk a thin line on the la virgen/la puta dichotomy enforced by Catholicism and machismo. Any actions that we commit that are seen as “betrayal” to our race will result in insults like “Malinche” or “Perricholi”. Our pride and loyalty to our heritage will always be called into question in ways that will never apply to our fathers, brothers, and sons. We are never allowed to address how damaging it is to endure this abuse or how tiring it is to do so much emotional labor, because it would result in us being told that we’re not loyal to our own men.
