What's your opinion on Yakuza 0 being taken off Steam, replaced with a Director's Cut version, that was made after the original director had left the company, that's worse than the original version, adds a multiplayer mode and added new cutscenes that retcons parts of the story to make it worse?
It seems to me you've made up your mind about this subject. So you seem to be looking more for my validation of your already existing feelings, not genuinely wanting my take on it.
How do you expect me to answer when you outright say "It's worse than the original" and "they add stuff that makes it worse" in your own question?
I haven't paid attention to the Yakuza 0 stuff. I don't know what you say is actually true or not. All I can say is I do not approve of delisting games in the wake of a remake/remaster/etc.
What's your opinion on people who say that it's ok for scripts to be horribly written because, 'that's how people talk in real life'?
A script is not just dialogue, so I think that's a bit of a non-sequitur.
I also don't think many people criticize dialogue for being realistic. Natural, casual dialogue is often praised.
The only time I've seen "that's how people talk irl" as a talking point is when the dialogue in the movie is littered with memes and slang. The criticism is not that it is 'badly written' but either because the dialogue conflicts with the character or the dialogue will become extremely dated very quickly.
Surprise! It's an arson!
(Drawover of a meme I saw)
What's your opinion on the guy who wrote the ghoul kid saying that all criticisms against it are stupid as he considers the Fallout franchise a stupid setting with dumb, sci-fi rules?
I think that if you fall back on that excuse as a writer, you already know you've made a mistake.
Rules create stakes. By violating those rules, you tread on future and past stakes. This is what happened with the "Kid in the Fridge" introducing rules that made the pay off for Necropolis in Fallout 1 not make sense.
So I'm curious about the Warhammer 40k universe and IIRC you're into it to some extent. Is there a particular game you think serves as a good intro to the franchise? Or do you recommend starting with the books? Or elsewhere?
Warhammer is kind of a pick-and-mix situation. I like the setting and lore but I wouldn't say I'm an expert (nor do I play the wargame).
If you're wanting a decent introduction, Rogue Trader by Owlcat is probably going to be your best bet because it allows you to explore the setting with unparalleled freedom.
If you're wanting a book series, I've heard the Eisenhorn novels are the more accessible.
What do you want from the next Cyberpunk game?
I want the game to embrace more RPG elements and design philosophy.
Character customization being expanded would be good; like more cyberware that changes your appearance in addition to mechanical benefits, a wider range of perks and attribute interactions, etc.
I'd want an expanded lifepath system, where rather than just Street/Nomad/Corpo, you get other choices that can be used to get unique dialogue/outcomes. The unfortunate reality is that in the first game, outside of the intro and one mission, your lifepath doesn't change much.
I'd want missions to have a wider range out outcomes and solutions, ranging from different approaches that open up with new cyberware to more dialogue that has more meaningful impact.
There should be a wider range of mission experiences. In 2077, aside from main missions, most side gigs are just "go to X, kill/retrieve Y" and that gets old. Have more side objectives and choices that change the outcome of the missions dynamically.
More side activities. 2077 only really had a couple arcade machines and the tarot card hunt. Look to the Yakuza games for inspiration; bar games, (more) street racing, virtual reality, BDs. Heck, imagine in 2077 if there was a rhythm game where you go on gigs with Samurai, similar to Yakuza's karaoke.
I want more immersive elements. I would love to get buffs from food, so I'm encouraged to sit down at food stalls or buy from vending machines on the regular (and actually eat). I want random events that show that NC is dangerous, like random drive-bys or shops being held up. I'd like more room customization and things to do inside my home.
And then there's more mechanical things:
I'd want an overhaul to the combat so that different flavors of melee are more distinct while making different classes of firearm more defined.
Quickhacking should probably be changed because it's so powerful. Having something like ICE to break through first before some of your stronger quickhacks take effect would help with that.
Likewise, network hacking should probably be tied into stealth. Being able to upload hacks to an entire network and gaining more and more control of the environment would benefit that playstyle more.
I'd want a complete overhaul of the driving mechanics. Driving in the game can be such a hassle because they don't handle like actual vehicles. Likewise, I'd want fast travel to be more limited so you're encouraged to drive to your locations.
I'd like to see some interplay between attributes for perks, rather than have everything sectioned off. Stuff like a Strength/Tech build maybe having the option for a perk for even more Cyberware Capacity. Stuff like that.
Cyberpunk 1.0 vs 2.0
Ironically, I think that Cyberpunk 2077 (and the game franchise as a whole) is better off in this timeline as opposed to the one where 1.0 launched without issue.
This isn't me excusing CDPR, their bad practices during Cyberpunk and the state 2077 launched in.
I'm just aware that if 1.0 went off without a hitch, Cyberpunk would have been mediocre. All the 2.0/PL overhauls to crafting, combat, perks, etc, wouldn't have been made because there've been no impetus for it.
The 2.0 version has a clearer, more defined, better fitting set of mechanics than 1.0 did and that'll likely continue forward in the sequel.
The people in charge of 2.0 are not the same people who did 1.0 and those who overhauled the game for years to make it a good game are the ones going into making the next one, which is good for the overall series.
Funny how things work out.
