Mace had always kept a close eye (metaphorically and physically when he could) on Depa. Ever since she’d been his padawan. He’d always kept a look out for her force presence if he could, and it had simply become a habit of his.
So he felt it when she returned to the world. How could he not? For all he preached the code, he was a bit of a hypocrite when it came to Depa sometimes. He wouldn’t admit it to many, but she was a daughter to him.
Mace had dropped everything when he picked up on Depa’s signature, something that was thankfully easier than it had been with no war and no position on the new counsel. He’d only let a few people know what he was off to do before he left the temple.
Depa’s death had been one of the last things he’d felt before he’d succumbed to his injuries, and when he’d finally tracked her down, he froze. She looked the same as he remembered too. And for all his gruffness, he couldn’t help but just watch her fondly for a few moments. Mace had missed her.
a familiar presence brushed up against hers, & for a moment, depa didn’t believe it. yes, she knew that people were being returned from the dead — she herself had been returned from the dead. she just didn’t believe her own luck. a part of her had been missing since she arrived in this time, their old bond, that she couldn’t find again until they were close enough. it had felt … not gone, but different.
mace had always been too proper to say it too openly, but for depa the truth rang loud & clear : mace was a father to her. she loved him, maybe more than the jedi code allowed for. on haruun kal, that love had saved her. but she hadn’t quite known what to do with him since. how to fix things. even how to fix herself.
now, though. it was easy, clear. she turned when she felt him near, a broad, warm smile spreading across her face. “hello, mace. are we going to stand here all day, or will you come give me a hug ? “
