How to spend 24 hours in Milan
08:00 - Start your day at the heart of the city by taking the underground line U1 or U3 until Duomo (Piazza Duomo) and enjoy the breathtaking cathedral church before the tourist crowds hit. (Fun fact: The cathedral took more than six centuries to be completed – hence the numerous architects are represented in the contrasting styles of the monument- and it is the third largest church of Europe.) The time between 8 and 10 am is the best time to shoot pictures when the square is still all empty. Afterwards enjoy a quick coffee and breakfast at Panini Durini (Via Giuseppe Mengoni, 4).
One of my favourite museums in Milan is the Museo del Novecento, not only because of its excellent exhibitions but also because the third floor allows a spectacular front view on the cathedral and the Piazza del Duomo. Finish your morning with a stroll through the world-famous Galleria Vittorio Emmanuele and some window shopping between Gucci and Louis Vuitton. TIPP: Avoid the mall inside the gallery (called La Rinascente) although it appears in many online guides for “Shopping in Milan”. I have been there and not only is it overpriced and consists of mainstream fashion stores but you will also waste your time as it is overly crowded. Exit the Galleria Vittorio Emmanuele and find yourself at the Piazza della Scala right across the city’s theatre. From there on proceed to Via Guiseppe Verdi which will then lead you to the Brera district. Along your way you will pass the Pinacoteca di Brera, one of Italy’s most renowned art galleries. Spend some time there gazing in amazement while surrounded by numerous paintings or just enjoy a quick stop snapping some architecture pictures at the Palazzo di Brera where the gallery is located. MUSEUM TIPP: The Prada Foundation in Milan is one of my favourite museums I have ever been to. The exterior is almost as outstanding as the exhibitions inside, however we only reached the museum by car as it is located at the train station Milano Porta Romana which is outside the inner city circle. If you happen to have several days in Milan, I would definitely recommend the trip there.
Enjoy some boutique shopping at Via Brera which hosts countless fashion stores with unique and individual designs while you head to Eataly where you can grab some quick bites for lunch as well as small gifts to bring back home. Afterwards proceed to 10 Corso Como which hosts not only the most instagrammable café of Milan but also a crazy designer store on the ground floor, a book store on the first floor as well as a changing contemporary art gallery, a terrace and even accommodation.
Nearby 10 Corso Como we discovered an excellent restaurant called Alla Cucina delle Langhe which I certainly would recommend. You can enjoy a great Italian multiple-course dinner for reasonable prices (compared to Milanese price standards) or proceed to the canal area of Milan, Navigli. There you can enjoy sushi at Temakinho – a Japanese-Brazilian fusion kitchen – and afterwards go on for your last stop with drinks at ZOG (right next to Temakinho).
