There was the smallest of twitches when Selina wrapped her arms around him. His head lowering slightly as he rested his hand on top of hers. “I’m sorry. I know. Logically I know it but you know how I’ve trained myself. Most call it just being paranoid but it’s saved my life countless times. I know, I’m supposed to switch it all off this weekend. I’m trying. I promise. It’s just difficult to switch off something that has kept me going for so long.”
It was a lot to admit. Bruce knew that the way he trained himself often drove people away from him. He had almost driven Selina away once before during his first encounter with Hush all because of a simple word. The last thing he wanted to do was push Selina away now.
He shifted a little in Selina’s light grip so that he could turn to face her. “Pamela is in South America. Since Harley left Joker, she’s been in the most stable condition I’ve known her in for years. Neither has had a reason to do anything. I trust you when you’re with them because I know you’re capable of stopping them from getting too out of control. All of that I know and logically tells me that everything is fine.”
Bruce let out another breath and shook his head. “Look, just forget about it. I’m not worried about it anymore. It was just a stupid instinctive momentary thing and I’m done with it. We should get moving before we risk it getting too dark.”
“I know how you are, Bruce. That’s why I just wanted to R E M I N D you that it’s okay. You’re S A F E. And I’m not about to...P O I S O N you with sunflower butter.” Selina confirmed, stretching up to press her lips along his jaw. It was a soft moment, just a little P E C K but one that would hopefully comfort him.
She offered a tender smile and hugged him close for a moment before releasing him to continue prepping their lunch for a moment. She licked a bit of the aforementioned sunflower butter from her thumb, wrapping up the sandwiches quickly. “Bruce, you don’t have to explain it to me. If you were any different, I don’t know if we’d be here now.”
Swiftly, she slipped their lunch into the bags and slung one over her shoulders, and stuffing her hair back into a ballcap. “Hm. I never pictured you as one who was A F R A I D of the dark.” She grinned, teasingly. Side-stepping around him, she made sure to pinch his ass on her way out the door.
“Hopefully you can keep up with me. I mean--I may break a H I P on my way up there but...”
Selina hoped that the joking would bring him out of his tension. It was a long-shot and she couldn’t blame him for his C O N C E R N. But that didn’t mean that she wouldn’t try and get him out of the funk.
