Yes "grumpy angry guy" x "soft patient guy" is good, but have you considered "guy who yells one curse word while banging his fist on the table and then calms down" x "guy who screams fudge repeatedly while throwing things and knocking chairs over and causing a huge ruckus"?
Yes this is bloodymary. Simon and Rocky staring at Grace yelling "DUCK DUCK DUCKING DUCK! DUCK DUCK GOOSE DUCK!" in utter confusion.
Simon design + Bloodymary doodle!
I LOVE THEM SOOO BAADDDD, I haven't fixated on a ship or fandom space so hard since I was like 12. I hope ya'll like my VERY detailed rocky drawing.
Simon patting the SM-13
Iron Lung (2026)
This gives off paranoid "maybe if I'm gentle with her, she'll let me live" behavior.
i love the women of project hail mary
i love annie shapiro and her not having any filter "sorry i had to go use the restroom, i was peeing myself" and her nerdy excitment to get to learn from grace
i love olesya ilyukhina, her bravery and childlike innocense, hugging the earth's dicatator like nothing, taking her teddy bear to a suicide mission, and literally sacrificing her life for humanity without a second thought
i loved dr. lokken's pride and her beef with grace about his theory
i love eva stratt and her love for humaity being so big that she had to destroy herself to give humanity a real chance to have a future

The Butcher
Post got me thinking
I'm not literate enough to make this more eloquent but something something Simon's background with the cult, themes of faith and religion in his past with Eden, religion being a coping mechanism for people living under inescapable and unbearable circumstances, and cults thriving in times of chaos where people have nowhere to turn. Simon being groomed into the idea of giving his life for the Father, having no means of escape once he's physically welded into the SM-13 and at the mercy of the Eel, creating a reality in his head where he's a martyr dying to save humanity, where his worthless life could actually mean something, to find peace in his final moments when he never really had a choice in the matter. Because that's what people do when there is no altering a horrible fate; they cope.
Vs. Grace, a staunch atheist, who had the luxury of answers and the science to back it up available to him at every point in his journey, who never lost his mind because there was always a reasonable explanation somewhere in sight, if not already in his possession. He had rationality, he had reason, and he had a choice. Not initially, of course; initially, he was forced to be part of the research team studying Astrophage (one could say he was groomed in a way, becoming invested in saving humanity so he was less likely to say no to the mission). However, his story is unequivocally shaped by his actions. He could've killed himself early on with the myriad of suicide options granted to him for a quick, painless death, he could've refused to go to Tau Ceti, he could've returned to Earth instead of going back for Rocky; he was forced to be aboard the Hail Mary, but the moment he wakes up his decisions are his own.
I imagine in any sort of after story, they both struggle with believing themselves to be good people, given they had to be forced into doing the right thing. Grace would reassure himself with the choices he made once he was in control, when it mattered most. Though there would be moments, pits of discomfort, when the Eridians praise him as the hero of humanity. He can take credit for saving Erid with selfless intent, but humanity... it'll take time before he can accept that one. And Simon, who might not ever know if those down at the C.O.I. were able to retrieve the blackbox, certainly can't call himself a savior in any regard. The mission was bigger than him, and for all that he was and all that he did, it doesn't matter if he truly ended up saving them or not; he doesn't deserve to be called a hero. The Butcher already has his title.
Modern BloodyMary au except they both keep their tragic pasts. Simon escaped from a violent cult and almost died and Grace got onto a research project that ended up almost killing him, wound up being illegal and was administered that amnesiac French drug and kidnapped where he met Rocky and they both escaped together.
They are all trying to live a normal life and Simon and Grace are both trying to fool the other into thinking they are sooooo normal. They’re like the most normal guy. And terrified the other will find out their sketchy past and get freaked out.
Ryland Grace in just his boxers, on the floor, white board marker in hand as he's labeling bones in his body and telling Rocky what they are and how fucked he'd be if they broke: ...yeah so this one is my femur and if that one breaks that's gonna take 4 - 6 months and I basically can't walk for most of it.
Rocky, texture reader in one hand, watching all this in horrified silence:
When you think about it
The jingly celebration outfit that Rocky wore was probably Extremely Slutty by Eridian culture (going by what I know of them from the book I’ve yet to read)
I for one, fully subscribe to the idea that Rocky went a bit crazy in his decades of solitude and became a nudist as a result. He fully set himself free from the buttoned up collar modesty of Eridian society, eating included.
Because Eridians all normally wearing clothing makes total sense for echolocation rock folk. The texture and shape of the fabric ‘blurs’ the 3d image others hear. Even more so if the fabric is thick and sound absorbing. So him wearing a sweater in the books makes sense.
Now, for a eridian to dress up and want be the center of attention, they would want to wear something that is literally loud. Crinkly fabrics, lots of jewelry. A chain mail dress to them would be a sequin dress to us. But to wear such outfits ‘respectably’ is wear them while still wearing underwear. Be cause if you let the decoration bounce against your core, the metal colliding with the stone body will echo and show everyone your hole by sound alone.
And to wear Only the loudest jewelry ever while totally naked?? That’s down right public indecency. The kinda stunt pulled by streakers running across a public sports field for the attention.
The truth comes out about this aspect of Eridian culture over half way to Erid. When it fully hits Rocky that he’s going home and gonna be surrounded by Eridians again. So he should probably start wearing cloths again.
Rocky does not say anything to Grace about it at first, just starts slowly wearing more and more cloths again. Until the day that Grace asks Rocky if he made himself these little outfits to emulate human culture. Something Grace thinks is a really sweet gesture of friendship between species.
“Rocky ask Grace hold onto feelings of friendship when Grace hears what Rocky must confess…”
