Emerson has been in the hero education system since he was eight years old and his parents died. He had been previously raised closely with his civilian peers and kept out of the world of super heroes and superpowers. Maddie, who had been close with his parents, took him under her wing and did her best to both protect and teach him, but she can't protect him as much now that he's entered the sidekick program. Emerson has super speed and doesn't really want to become a hero, but he doesn't really have a choice because of the lack of a legal claim by Maddie to guardianship as after his parent's death he became a ward of the state and was essentially bought by the corporations behind the hero's guild.
