With the recent release of Punderworld Vol. 2, I've reread Vol. 1 again and read Vol. 2 for the first time and I just have to say how much I continue enjoying this retelling!

I love how light-hearted it is while still having proper stakes, the art is just gorgeous, the story development is intriguing, the way the different powers and forms of the gods are utilized and shown is amazing and I love the designs and interpretations of pretty much every god and character (especially Hestia and Hekate in this volume)! While it does go the route of turning Demeter into an overbearing mother, it's a nuanced portrayal that doesn't just turn her into the villain. Her perspective is given equal room to that of Persephone and Hades, she has her reasons and justifications and I'm looking forward to seeing how this conflict between them is going to develop with already some obvious mistakes and misunderstandings being apparent. I also like that one of the original myth's purposes of explaining the seasons is taken into account with several hints about the mortal world being perpetually in the "growth" period so far and that becoming a strain on pretty much every god involved by now. I'm curious to find out if the initial hook with the influx of shades who don't remember how they died is connected to that or something else entirely. Nice setups of some intriguing mysteries there!

I'm a huge fan of modern retellings/reinterpretations of myths, some obviously much better or worse than others, but I think it's fine to do as long as you don't claim that you're telling the "actual true original" myth without any proper sources or claim that you're "improving" it. I certainly have my preferences for what kind of retellings I'm interested in and for this particular myth that usually means (1) Persephone and Hades being in love with each other and (2) Demeter not being demonized. That's not to disregard the strength and importance of the original myth which was also largely about the grief of a mother and her fight for her daughter after she was taken away either by forced marriage or an early death. However, these versions all end relatively tragically with Demeter only getting her daughter back for part of the year and Persephone being forced to live with her kidnapper and rapist for the rest of it. I admit I'm too much of a fan of happy endings, especially for female characters suffering under a deeply patriarchal society, for that to appeal all that much to me. I see too much of women not winning against misogyny irl, I don't need to see it in my fiction as well. (Though I'd totally be up for a retelling that gives Demeter and Persephone a full happy ending despite the kidnapping premise. Maybe in combination with the little fact that records of Persephone actually predate Hades - that'd be really cool to see in a retelling.) Again, that doesn't mean these stories aren't deeply valuable or not good, they're just not for me.

I like how Demeter's growing wrath is developed with the inclusion of Alekto. I was so confused on her introduction at first (not who she is, but why she appeared here) but her "flare-ups" quickly made that clear and in combination with that epithet of Demeter it's a really clever choice. In terms of story development, Hades' oath on the Styx shocked me the most, I did not expect that! It's such a great twist though and that entire scene with Hekate was amazing! Plus the intercutting with Persephone struggling in the Underworld and Demeter finding the scene of the crime and realizing that her daughter has been taken - what a season finale!

I also really like how many relevant female characters this story has. Vol. 1 felt about equal with Hades, Zeus and Hermes (who's also really cool) and Persephone, Demeter, Artemis and Charon (still love this version of Charon, she's so cool!), but Vol. 2 is firmly on the women majority side. There's only really Hades and Hermes in the man department, meanwhile we have Persephone, Demeter, the nymphs, Hestia, her followers, Alekto and Hekate and I just love seeing that so much! We need more stories with such a majority of relevant female characters!

Hello! I just binge read all of Punderworld and it’s SO COOL! 🤩🤩🤩

How’d you come up with Alecto’s design?

Hello! Thank you so much! It was a team effort between me and my husband. Alecto is actually a character from one of his comics fine print, whose name is changed to Bauphette there after millenia passed (both punderworld and fine print are in the same universe) In his story she is an ex fury turned desire godess so I mostly built on her existing design from fine print, with an inspiration form various greek paintings depicting furies. specifically this one:

This is a scene from a story that I’ve had in my head for quite a long time and that I may draw some day. It would be a flashback that focuses mainly on Athena’s first crush (on Prometheus) and her asexuality (naturally, she and Aphrodite are not exactly friends, but here Athena still manages to open up).

(I’m still not sure about my own orientation, but this would still be one of the more personal things I’ve drawn. When it comes to sex and romantic love, I’ve often felt like I’m “broken”.)

In The Homeric Hymn to Demeter, Demeter herself takes Demophoon from the hearth and places him on the ground when Metaneira interrupts the ritual, which implies that this magic could only be worked in secret. It says nothing about the child dying. However, some scholars argue that the hymn-poet clearly alludes to his approaching death by using the word aspaironta for when he is left gasping on the floor, a word used elsewhere of dying heroes. In other versions of the story, the child is immediately burnt up in the fire when the ritual is interrupted (Apollodorus Bibliotheca 1.5.1 and Orphic frag. 49, 100ff). In Hyginus Fabulae it is the father, here named Eleusinius, who interrupts the ritual. He was killed by the angry goddess, but the child (who here is Triptolemus) was honored by Demeter and was given her chariot with flying serpents to spread the cultivation of grain to rest of humanity.

This was one of the hardest pages in part 2 to draw, because I really didn't want Demophoon to die. But at the same time I realized that his death was necessary to push Demeter into putting her second plan into action.

Dumb question, but I was curious as to how collabs across webcomics are hosted and also how I might get around to perhaps maybe participating in one?

I'm a noob handling a bigger readership than I expected and I'm afraid I know approximately nothing about this kind of thing :,) and other cool things webcomic creators should probably know :,,)

Congrats on putting your own comic out there :D Collabs are generally done by meeting other creators and agreeing on a theme and then you each draw your own piece and at the end assemble it as an episode. I think the fastest way to meet other creators to collaborate would be to join the official canvas discord server and take it from there.
