Where does Learning happen?

Before trying to answer the question in the post title, why not some elaboration about what is learning? WHEN does learning happen is, at least to me, more important. 

So... what is learning? 

To me, learning is doing something one can't do beforehand. Is doing something new. When I say I don't know how to set fire to a barbecue grill (believe me, that's something of huge importance here in Brazil) and then some time later I manage to start a fire inside the grill here in my house for the week-end friend meeting, I learned something new to me, something I couldn't. 

Ok, of course the grill is no rocket science and one could learn it by simple observation or common sense. But where does both of them come from? Isn't almost all learnings a kind of observation? Isn't common sense a collection of dogmas, concepts and experiences? 

I don't want to bore all of you to death, but I still believe the basic education must be lived in a traditional way: schools and teachers. Can we replace then by the internet? By communities? Can we replace the teacher by the parents, the priest, the preacher, the reverend, the rabine? Again, maybe. But it will be more difficult if the student later decides on continuing his studies in a formal Eduacational Institution. The kid didn't attend school, all he's learnd came from his parents at home. Now he wants Harvard. Is it possible? Of course it is. Is it easier? I think it's harder -just my opinion. 

In the post that explains today's task, Jesse Stommel compared classrooms to "Top Chef", a funny reality cooking show. In those shows, people must do some barely explained tasks in some amount of time and with some amount of material. They do it all by heart, no recipes, no books, no websites, no Google to check. 

Although I love these tv shows, I think this kind of learning process only can succeed if the students have a solid educational and cultural basis. Remember: all the participating chefs get an arsenal of recipes. They aren't newbies, they usually came from dozen of years of practice in some restaurant. They can improvise, they already know a lot of recipes, they know combinations of foods. Where does this come from? From a solid cultural basis. 

After accumulating this knowledge, they can improvise or cook a splendid entreé without researching Google or the New York Times' Season Cookbook. Or, to not to be too tediously long, it is needed to get the educational basis, to be well-trained, to start this kind of learning. 

I believe there is nothing wrong with learning the basics, a lot of basics, first. Picasso was well trained. He knew a lot of techniques. So did others artists and good performers. We don't need to cut this off. But, and that's my point, we may can accelerate this learning. 

A lot of people (some of them, specialists) says that people are more creative when young. But normally young people lacks the basics. So what if we speed up learning as much as to antecipate this phase when one student is ready to do things reckoning only with his/her knowledge? Then, we could still speed up and enhance creativity. 

And, well, that's where learning does happen: in creativity.
