“I have two. They’re long necked turtles. Slippery and Slick.” George lead the way to his terrarium, where both of the baby turtles were napping for now. “I usually give them special turtle food from a jar, but I also feed them with dried insects. They are still young so I feed them daily, but once they’d be older it’s enough to feed them just 3 times a week. Their breed doesn’t eat vegetables, but now and then we tried but mostly they ignored it.Their breed is carnivorous so that explains.” George checked on Giselle if she was still listening, and hoped that he wasn’t boring her. “They are brothers, I think that’s why they are such a good company to each other, mostly males tend to fight once they grow older, but it won’t happen with them.” At least she called them cute so he was glad about that then cast his eyes back at her for a moment. “We can. If you give them a little time and they’d see you enough they’d be more comfortable to show themselves. Slick is the more confident one, and he’s mischievous, while Slippery is the shyer one.” Although George in general was quiet, when it was about a topic he was interested in he would have managed to talk about it for hours.
George walked up to his window and watched her pet with curiosity. “It’s nice of you, that you took him in…and maybe…I have a bad experience with a cat I had … for one day only. The one we had scratched me badly—I still have the wound, and I had a meltdown so mum had to take it to the shelter….but I want to try.” He couldn’t see himself holding Fergus but if Giselle would hold him instead then he’d have been alright with it.
“Phantom of the Opera, you even asked me if I’ll be okay with it cause it has some loud parts, but I think I’ll be fine….I don’t have a tv in my room yet, so follow me.” George lead the way across the living room then to a side room where a wide screen tv was with a sofa in there. “Thanks for the pretzels, there’s coke, beer and orange juice.” He leaned over to the mini fridge and took the coke out for himself. “It’s dad’s, he’s a big footy fan so he watches the matches here with his mates. But he’s rarely home. Mum said he’s in Japan now for a month or so.” George turned on the tv then entered the streaming app giving the remote to Giselle, before he opened the can of coke for himself. “Do you want me to pull in the curtains?”
George turned into a different person when he was talking about his turtles and the ASMR that he made. Which made her assume that those were two of the things he loved the most. She didn’t know him yet to say with absolute certainty that he was passionate about them, but at the very least, she could see that he loved them. “Slick and Slippery. Love their names! And I didn’t know that about turtles! I thought they liked eating vegetables; it’s what I’ve always seen on YouTube.” She was learning new things about topics she’d never dreamed she’d be more familiar with, which was nice. When the topic shifted to her kitten, she felt a similar smile form on her lips, and it helped her understand the shift in his personality. She loved Fergus very much, and she could easily imagine his passion and excitement for his turtles mirroring her own for her feline baby. “How could I not? He was so small and thin.” She teared up just thinking about it, and she smiled nervously, wiping the few tears that had formed. “Sorry. I just hate the thought of people hurting animals for any reason.” Another tear, and she wiped that away, too, before she settled down on the couch and asked if she could have a can of soda, too. “Oh, right, right. Sorry, I forgot. Spaced out from me listening to you talking about turtles. I hope they’ll like me so that I can hold them. And sure. Makes the room feel more like the inside of a movie theatre.”
She fell silent then, not wanting to distract him from the movie. Giselle was all settled next to him on the couch, and she popped the tab of her soda can before the music started. She’d heard of this musical many times before, but this was the first time that she was going to sit down and watch it in full. It might be a different experience because she was watching it with someone else, someone who enjoyed musicals, so she might end up liking it just as much as he did. Giselle did her best to keep quiet during the musical numbers so that she wouldn’t miss out on anything, and halfway through the movie, she was snuggled right up against George, her head resting on his chest. She occasionally reached for the snacks that were laid out, but for the most part, she had her eyes glued to the screen. It was only when the film was over and the credits were rolling that she exhaled loudly, a wow being the only thing she could say in response to the musical as a whole. “I…I loved it,” she admitted, finally turning her head up to look at him. “I wish Christine and Erik ended up together in the end, though. Raoul is great and all, but Erik loved her deeply. At least, I think so.”
