Orion reached over to his chair-side table, taking a pair of custard creams from his private supply. One, he posted one into his son’s mouth, and the other into his own. Once he’d chewed and swallowed the biscuit, and flipped to the business pages of the paper, he smiled down at his son in vague amusement. 

“That’s fine with me, at least until my legs cramp. Do you want the Quidditch pages?”

Sirius happily accepted the biscuit that was placed in his mouth, chewing it slowly in order to savor the flavor. This was one thing the two of them had in common -- or at least nothing so much as their love for custard creams.

“I’m not so heavy that I’ll make your legs cramp.” Sirius answered with a bright grin as he held his hands out for the Quidditch pages. “Anything interesting in the papers?”

James stared down at his friend as Sirius looked up, a smile already pulling at the corners of his lips as an automatic response to having his friend’s attention ( at this point, he was sure they mainly survived on affectionate gestures ).

“Good.” He responded, his smile growing and retaining the affection it had originated with. “Oh, yeah. Very interesting, the moon phenomena this month.”

“I’ll bet you three Galleons that everyone wrote about the moon phenomena... it’s hard to ignore, no?” He snorted a little laugh after a moment, “Well, everyone other than Remus. I’m certain he wrote about any -- and everything -- but the moon.”

He made no move to get up, happy to be this close to his chosen brother. “Can I read yours?”

I’m surprised you even know what a frequent flier is,” Severus uttered with a wrinkled nose, although he had to admit that if it wasn’t for Sirius then he would indeed struggle financially an incredible amount. In fact, he charged him considerably more than he did when out on the muggle streets of Sussex. There was a moment of contemplation before he gave a nod. “Fine, you can have a galleon off,” he muttered – still considerably more than he charged his muggle clients.

“I’m about to be cut off, haven’t you heard?” Sirius asked with a teasing smirk. “Why wouldn’t I know what a frequent flier is? I know Muggle terminology, Sev. I’ve got half-blood friends, Muggle born friends, and -- most importantly -- I listen to Muggle music. C’mon, now.” He gave Sev a look as if to say he was disappointed but it was soon replaced by his usual, charming smile.

“Mm... good, thank you. I appreciate it. I’m sure I fund your... well, your life. Do I not? You can give me a discount, or a freebie, every once in a while.”

“No, it wasn’t supposed to upset you.” James sighed - the last thing he ever wanted to do was hurt his friends intentionally. He even winced as the chairhis the ground, the noise too loud in the empty room. “I don’t need your help - and don’t use me as an excuse. If you want to snog Remus, go do it. Don’t hold back on my account.” He was insistent on his independence - he needed to be able to prove to himself and to the others that he can brew potions just as well as anybody else. “No - it is true. You live to be the centre of attention, and you can’t even admit it.”

“Don’t you think it would be best to find out whether or not he wants to snog me back before you tell me to go and find him?” Sirius asked through grit teeth. He was getting aggravated and he could feel the tension between the two of them, as tangible as the flesh on his bones. “I do not live to be the center of attention, James! I actually prefer for people to not stare at me and pay attention to everything that I do! I’d rather they look at you, but, of course, you’re just like everyone else.” He stood up, kicking his chair away from his body in frustration. “Let’s not forget who’s the arrogant toerag here, Potter.”

James twisted his lip between his teeth, only the arm around his shoulders keeping him from drifting off into his own thoughts. It hadn’t been his intention to drag the mood back down, but the deaths of his friends was quite literally the stuff of nightmares. “It’s not something to joke about.” He flicked his eyes sideways, sad and frustrated and apologetic all at once. “I’ve- we’ve lost too many people, Sirius. It’s not a joke these days.”

“But we were only just joking?” Sirius continued, looking a bit confused mixed with irritable. He hated being the one to ruin the fun, but he also hated not knowing what was too far and when. He felt inept and that was not a good feeling. Finally, he sighed, looking up at the ceiling. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to upset you... okay? We were just joking around, and we were already talking about death, so I don’t... I really don’t get it.” He shrugged. “I won’t do it again.”

Orion felt a small sliver of guilt for making his son jump. Annoyed as he may be, he wasn’t inhumane. He almost apologised - almost - and would have too, if it weren’t for the fact that Sirius’ foul language had started the process. He was tired of the arguing between his wife and son, tired of getting the backlash from both of them afterwards, and tired of family life in general. It was an awkward age, apparently.

“I forgive you.” Of course he did; he never could stay very angry for very long where Sirius was concerned. “-And I will apologise for scaring you.”

“Love is never simple.” Orion refuted with a shake of his head. “I only have answers from my own personal experiences - yours will be different, naturally.” Wondering exactly what it was that had brought on this line of questioning, his grey eyes developed a laser focus. “You’re not incapable of love, Sirius. You just…. haven’t found the right person to love yet.”

Sirius, for a moment, looked very bit the young boy he really was -- the young boy he tried to pretend he wasn’t (as if he were already a man). He swallowed thickly and nodded his head at his father, happy to be forgiven so easily -- when he knew how cumbersome it could be to get someone in this house to let go of a grudge. He, too, was guilty of it -- never forgetting when he was scorned.

“It’s all right. I deserved it.” He admitted with a sheepish shrug. He leaned forward, resting his chin on his folded arms as he looked up at Orion with wide, listening grey eyes. “Do you love Mum?” He asked, but his voice was so soft, it was hardly above a whisper. He often wondered if his parents cared for each other in the marital sense, or at least in the fairy tale sense. It didn’t seem like it and it wouldn’t upset or surprise him if his father said no. Then again, it wouldn’t surprise him if Orion refused to answer or lied, either.

“So I’ve heard.” Sirius continued with an exasperated sigh. “But what if I can’t? I mean... what if I think I love someone but I’m really just being selfish and manipulative? I’m scared. I don’t want to be a horrible person, Father.” He scrunched up his face, the topic of feelings foreign to him. “What if I have, though? Found the right person, I mean.”

Hello, I recently got back into the Harry Potter Fandom, but I never joined the rp fandom before. I was thinking of making a Tom Riddle blog and just rp him, but I wasn't sure how many rp blogs are in the fandom at the moment. Sirius had charmed one of their housemate’s guitars to play by itself as he lounged by the window in Gryffindor Tower. Jane was sat nearby -- with Remus -- huddled over a pile of useless homework, and Sirius simply could no bear the lack of attention he was receiving. As the guitar played on, Sirius began to sing (if only to annoy his friends):
