Journal Entry #8 The Importance of Peer Groups

I was at my cousin's house and she started playing music. All of a sudden the song, Clique By Kanye West Ft. Big Sean and Jay-Z, started playing. The verse that struck was,

" Ain't nobody fucking with my

Clique, clique, clique, clique, clique

Ain't nobody fresher than my muthafuckin

Clique, clique, clique, clique, clique

As I look around, they don't do it like my

Clique, clique, clique, clique, clique

And all these bad bitches, man, they want the

They want the, they want the..."

The reason that this verse struck was because it made me think of the reading we had to do for homework. That reading basically explained that having a peer group or clique is important to develop socially because the child can act a certain way around their clique. If their clique doesn't approve of what the child is doing, the child will not do it in front of others because he or she knows how his or her friends feel. In 8th grade, I remember hanging out with my friends. I did something really stupid  (I threw a water balloon outside my friend's window) and I remember my friends just yelling at me "Don't ever do that, STUPID!" When I heard that, I never did that again in any of my other friend's houses again.

The way a child is raised is based off the parenting style of their parents. In class, we learned about the parenting styles some parents may have. Each parenting style will have some effect on the development of the child. For example,  if a child is raised the authoritarian style, the child may end up hating authority or become socially withdrawn. This means that because parents were being the "boss" of them, they may end up bad in society because they weren't given too much freedom  when the child was young. If a child is raised the authoritative or democratic style, the child may end up very sociable, can make their own decisions, and develop relationships positively.  This is because the child was given the ability to choose what is to be done in the household or had a say when there was a major decision being made. Personally, my mother's  parenting style is democratic or authoritative because when something major is about to happen between us, she always lets me have a say to see if this decision will benefit  both of us or not.

As a child is growing up, there are always some types of celebration. Depending on the culture, there are certain celebrations that mark the transition to adulthood. For example, when any person celebrates their 18th birthday, they are young adults entering adulthood. Being eighteen is the mark where society considers young adults or teenagers as adults. This example supports the theory of Stanley Hall because it sees adolescent as representing a transitional stage. If someone is in the Jewish community, their age of transition is either 12 (for girls) and 13 (for boys). This example supports the theory of Margaret Mead because she believes that culture might play a role in adolescent development. A time in my life where I would feel that I am entering adulthood is when I graduate high school and enter into college. Experiencing these two events would make me feel like an adult because I will be doing things based off what I feel. Meaning that being an adult, to me, is making decisions for me.

I watch this show every Tuesday on Oxygen. This show is called Bad Girl's Club. The main point of this show is to come in one way and leave another way. Meaning that each girl that comes onto this show with a certain attitude or has mad bad moral, leave with a different mind set. For example, the picture above, is showing two girls discussing. Jazmone (the one without the headband) is telling Janelle that while she is getting reading in the make-up room, she shouldn't be flipping her hair back and forth. Janelle argues back and basically doesn't understand why her hair whipping is bothering Jazmone, it's just hair. After that moment, Janelle didn't hair whip her hair again. This example supports Dr. David Elkind because he claims that because adolescents haven't fully developed the ability to see the world from other perspectives, their views tend to be self-centered. Because Janelle was told to stop the hair whipping, she stopped doing it to be accepted in the house. In other words, she personally wanted to change to be accepted by others.

Journal Entry #4 Adolescent Development Psychlogy

Depending on the surroundings of a child, will determine how the child will develop. If a child is shown how to do something at a young age, it is most likely that it will continue to do it as he or she gets older. This is a clear example of Margaret Mead's theory of adolescence that culture might play a role in adolescent development. As I was growing up, my family would suggest things that I should do to become a better version of myself. For example, when I was three years old, I didn't like sharing. When I moved to another apartment (where most of my family lived), I started to share things with others. This shows because of my previous surrounding I didn't like to share things. Now that I went somewhere else where the culture is different, I started to share. This proves Mead's theory of adolescence.

Journal Entry #3 Physical Development

There come a time when males and female change physically. This change may be expected or might come as a surprise to the person. This change is called puberty. A child hitting puberty supports G. Stanley Halls theory of adolescence he saw the adolescent as representing a transitional phase. To Hall, this also means that being an adolescent was like being a fully grown animal in a cage that has freedom, but doesn't know how to handle it. This means when a child is going through puberty, it can be a time where the child may be free physically, but mentally is prepared to show the world. A child going through puberty also supports Robert Havinghurst's theory that every adolescent faces challenges in the form of developmental tasks that must be mastered. I remember when I started growing facial hair on my face, I thought I was becoming a bear and I didn't like it. Every time I got one inch of hair on my face, I went to the barber shop to get it removed. Overtime, I had to learn to live with it and realize that I am moving from adolescence to a young adult. This example supports the theories of Hall and Havinghurst.

This picture is of a show I watch every Sunday on ABC called Once Upon a Time. Its starts off with a girl who was abandoned when she was a little girl, but for a great reason. The girl, Emma, over the course of time is supposed to be some types of savior in a town where this show takes place. This show supports the psychoanalytical theory because Emma learned how to be the hero by identifying certain things that her parents do such as defeating the evil queens with her mind and strength. When I was twelve years old, I saw my mother cooking. Years would pass by and I tried to copy everything she cooked because I wanted to be a cook just like her. This also proves the psychoanalytical theory because I tried to identify what my mother was doing at the time.

This quote is from a boy that is inherently good but he was brought up bad due to the surroundings he was in. This quote gives an example of what Judith Rich Harris claim about how the surrounding of a person may help contribute to what behaviors you might have on the world. In some cases, some people grow up based on what is in their environment
