“Oh no, you’d be wrong then. Plenty of people call me a dick. I don’t deny it, but I’m only telling the truth. People are stupid - I don’t say it to be rude.”

“Not everyone is a nihilistic as you.” Soleil says, rolling her eyes. “Or is that just part of your like Mr. Scrooge act? Because when i met you, you were pretty nice, it’s taken a weird turn.”

“Oh, and there it is.” Silas chuckled when she snapped at him. “I was being polite. Have you ever stopped to think that I’m just telling the truth and not being nihilistic?” He didn’t necessarily believe life was meaningless - he had things to live for.

“Seems to arbitrary, like… Why wood? Who was like ‘ah yes, this noble pine has anti jinxing powers, we must knock upon it!’” She tries her best British accent but it’s pretty bad.

“Anyway. Whatever. Seems dumb.”

Silas sighed as she chatted on - for some reason she could yell at him but still chat at him the next day. He brought his coffee to his lips, watching her over the rim of the mug, “Most things people do are dumb.”

“At least it feels like I can breathe again without tragedy striking.” Soleil pauses. “Or did I jinx it? How do you unjinx stuff?!”

“You knock on wood, I think.”

It was the man that James had spoken to the day before. James wasn’t sure if he was a nurse, or if he was simply here to torment the boy, but he was sure he was being made fun of. Especially when the words coming out of his mouth made no sense. Deadpanning, he drew his lips into a frown. “Under. Boy to.” Haha, very funny.

“Hm,” Silas frowned, bringing his fingers from the young man’s wrist to his forehead. No fever. “Please, remain calm. I’m helping the doctor’s, I’m not here to insult you this time around.” He spoke slowly, though clearly, focused as his fingers moved across James’ head, searching for any lumps that may indicate some sort of head trauma. He wasn’t sure necessarily what to look for, so he listened in the hopes that Caine would be passing by to call for help.

“Excuse me, are my musings about the current state of affairs bothering you?” She turns to the man she recognized as the teacher, eyes slightly narrowed as she bounced the baby on her hip.

“So sorry that you can’t enjoy silence and a cup of coffee in the middle of a war zone.”

“Yes, they are.” Silas responded matter of factly. He could care less if he hurt the little buttercups feelings. His own eyes narrowed at her in response. 

“It wouldn’t be a war zone if people would just mind their own damn business.”

James had always hated hospitals. He wasn’t sure if it was the smell, so clean that it pierced his nose and made it ache, or if it was just the idea… people were dying here. James knew where he was the second he woke; the smell had clung to him so tightly… He took a deep breath, opening his eyes carefully.

The light blinded him for a minute and he shut his eyes again. His head hurt so much. But he was okay, wasn’t he? He could feel his legs, could move his fingers. He was okay.

Feeling a presence at the door, he pulled himself up into a sitting position. He didn’t even want to look, it was probably just some nurse, but… He just had to tell them he was okay. His mouth felt so dry, but he knew he had to tell them he was okay. Looking down at his fingers, he took another deep breath. “Frog bag.” He said, his voice as clear as day.

Silas had agreed to help - with everything going on classes had been cancelled and he’d been left to either sit aside uselessly or aid Caine in helping the victims of the blast. He’d chosen the latter option, obviously, and he could feel himself sigh in irritation as the young man sat up and spoke nonsense. Striding into the room, Silas reached over and took the man’s wrist in his hand, finding his pulse to check his vitals as Caine had told him. This was the same boy that he’d spoken to in the dining hall the previous day. Luckily for Silas he was having lunch with Caine at home that day.

“Do you know where you are?” He asked, keeping his voice calm and slow.

Calvin worried his bottom lip as the other told him about that little piece of information. “But why would they want them gone? Because they are sirens, or perhaps something else?” Calvin had a habit of over thinking things, probably from the journalism values that his mother had pushed into him. “Ugh, I wish I could be a fly on the wall right now

“That or they know too much about something,” Silas smirked, he had plenty of theories, and being as suspicious as he naturally was, he just knew that neither side was all they claimed to be. There was violence and anger in everyone, somewhere. “Don’t we all?”

“Why do I have the feeling that I’m not going to like this plan of yours?”

“It’s only to get you to safety, Caine.” He lowered his voice just slightly, so only the doctor could hear his words, “I’m not going to kill anyone unless they threaten your safety. I know I broke my promise.. but I intend to keep it in the future.”

calvinxwinchester:

Calvin jumped as he heard a voice behind him. He nodded his head at the other man’s words. “Yeah…But what if they’re not sirens?” He asked. “What if this list is from a bad source? What if they’re getting punished for no reason? I wish there was some actual proof, instead of a paper just floating around.” He said.

“Then they will be able to prove that.” Silas answered with a shrug, “I’ve heard speculations that the list came from the government, though. So there’s a reason their names are on it. And that’s because the government wants them gone.” He’d heard several government guards chatting about it - how someone seemed to have leaked it.

“You don’t think I’ve tried? I haven’t just been sitting around twiddling my thumbs. But I don’t know if you’ve realized, this is happening now. There isn’t time for me to learn anything and you are just sitting here and judging people for reacting appropriately!”

Pushing himself up from the table, he sent the man a glare. “Don’t assume that you’re safe just because you refuse to pick a side.” And then he was turning to leave.

The outburst wasn’t a shock, to say the least. But, it did mean he could get some peace and quiet and escape to check on Caine. Bring the man a coffee. Leaning back in his seat, he glared at the young man, “I haven’t assumed I’m safe. I just remain calm until action is needed, which I have a plan in place for. Perhaps if this girl you care about had been smarter she’d have had a plan of action as well.” He didn’t need to pick a side to feign alignment when the time came. He wasn’t out to save anyone other than himself and Caine - he did not need a cause.

“And then what?” James looked up at the man, forgetting his anger. “All I do is burden her. I can barely hold a weapon, let alone shoot one. I can’t protect her.” And maybe that was the most frustrating part about this entire thing. James couldn’t do a single thing to protect his sister.

“Then maybe you should learn.” Silas pointed out blankly, bringing his coffee to his lips. He was really, truly done with this conversation.

James was seething because he had a point, but in what must have been a flash of a second his anger turned to desperation and he flopped onto a chair. “No, because I have no idea where she is and I’m useless. But that doesn’t stop me from caring.”

Silas sighed heavily - he’d meant his comment to make the boy go away not sit down. “You could still be trying to find her,” Silas pointed out, in another attempt to get the boy to leave him to drink his coffee in peace.

Soleil was still staring at the flyer. She wasn’t sure what this meant exactly – well she knew what the contents of the flyer meant. Some of the people she knew, she had trusted and befriended were aligned with the sirens. But with this information disseminated, what did that mean? What was going to happen next. She shifted the sleeping baby in her arms and mentally cursed Lincoln for having to leave this week of all weeks. She could feel the tension in the air and with jack– she just wanted to make sure they stayed safe.

“Jesus this is such a shit show.” She mumbles.

Silas just wanted some damn peace and quiet. He wanted to check in on Caine to make sure the doctor wasn’t too swamped with the heightened violence around the base, as well. And yet, all around him people were yelling or talking. All about the damn flyers. 

“I just wanted to drink my coffee in silence,” He groaned when the woman nearby spoke.

Calvin felt a sense of dread as he looked at the flyer that had just drifted towards him. With the name of a couple of sirens on it. Calvin had been drifting between which side to go to. His mother had hated the government after working for them for 30 years and finding out they were keeping secrets from her, but he wasn’t exactly ready to die. But looking at the flyer in his hand had him doubting about his thoughts to figure out how to be a siren…”Those poor people…” He mumbled to himself outloud, unaware he wasn’t alone.

Silas didn’t feel a twinge of sympathy for those whose names were on the list. Perhaps that should have changed with the last boy who was clearly under distress at the names, but it didn’t. They’d made their choice knowing fully well that they could be in that situation. “They knew what they were getting into.” He muttered, though the boy didn’t seem to realize Silas was there.

“Maybe those people don’t want to survive in a world without the ones they love the most. These people are making a difference and good people are on that list. What would you do if you were on that list?” James would have asked what he would have done if someone he cared was on that list, but James highly doubted he actually cared about anybody.

Silas smirked at the boy’s question. It was as though he didn’t think that there was anyone Silas himself cared about. Though, honestly, that was probably exactly what he thought. “I’m not completely heartless, boy, but I do know that if the one person I cared about had his name on that list, I would take care of him and make sure no one hurt him. Can you say that’s what you’re doing by speaking to me?”

James couldn’t eat, not when he was so stressed about his sister, but when he overheard the man, he couldn’t help but speak up. “Maybe some people have siblings involved, did you ever think of that? Maybe people actually give a shit about someone from those sides.”

“Maybe those people should really re-evaluate whether they have a desire to survive in this world or not. Getting involved in the wars of weak-minded imbeciles is not the way to stay alive.”
