The effect was immediate and powerful. Holt’s senses expanded; distant snapping branches cracked loudly, smoke bloomed inside his nose, the heat of the campfire baked one cheek while the other cheek caught the chill of the cold night air. Feeling it was safe to look at something other than the green blade now, Holt lifted his eyes to look upon Brode’s face. Every small line appeared like a crevice on his old face; and for the first time he saw the true depths of his sad eyes.
the way that when holt and ash meld senses, holt gain some of ash's discerning nature.
idk this detail is running rent free in my brain. as it should.
in the time holt is their eyes, ash's participation in the contract is to add depth to the world. their connection has never been of dominance but of two brothers side by side.
The armory had survived better than most rooms, though the contents had been pillaged. “They’ve taken my armor,” Talia bemoaned. She kicked at a charred helmet, then sucked in a sharp breath from the pain of it, though she didn’t let it show on her face with Holt looking.
she is really funny
intrusive thought before work: since magic injuries are extra terrible and take too much to heal. how resistant riders to their dragon's magic? storm riders get scarring (rip vald's fingers) but i'm thinking if they procrastinated on oprning motes channels and a rather too unforontuate accident happen (fire novice scratching their nose after blasting somthing idk) is it an rip or they gotta a damage percentage off? like a discout because the source of the magic loves them despite the second hand embarrassment
my x' for you page was constant qoute-tweets of "popular fantasy series that i dropped" for the past two days. been the most fun i had on x for a while
not just the rain of recommendations, but some of the discussions that had been had was entertaining with zero context
Since I'm in a sour mood, here is some of my favorite "banishment tope" butchery. (That as much as it claims to celebrate found family trope, they always betrays the spirit of it)
"Banishment is almost like leaving your childhood home for college, so missing home is synonyms with refusing to grow up."
"Home is where the heart is, NEVERRR stones or woods. Human are basic and bland like that"
"Home is where your family is- oh... you are thrown out of your family and community? yea you can just delete them of your mind don't fuss about it. Getting hung up on them is just you being an egotist over-estimating your worth."
back on my bullshit but again I'm reading a novel and the subject of banishment is AGAINNN reduced to "just find a new home you silly goose"
And i don't want to sound like an asshole but how many writers do read history?
Because banishment was adjacent to execution.
An entire community rejects you in the extreme. At best, when you do find a new place to life in, and then these people never thought "Hey why would his community throw him out? better never find out" and kicked you, everything you built in your previous community jobs and marriage and love and children or even a friend a connection with any amount of honest rapport, and oh don't even forget every trust every smile every hello and good morning? you have to HARD earn that.
Oh that IF you didn't fall under prejudice from how you look what you beleive in is there a historical blood and alllll that.
And if you do fall under any of these? good luck! you can't go back home. They treat you like a walking corpse.
Even if you don't read history- maybe banishment system didn't cross you (it happens)- bare minimum of putting yourself in the banished shoes would have you go "this fucking sucks. it is dehumanising, almost"
miller.
on the list of soc ironies of all times is adaskar holding much admiration to the ingenuity of the builders who constructed the halls. how they capture the wind flow within storm barracks, how they preserved the heat in fire's etc etc.
and then he turn around and shoot down everything ferrucio suggests on sight.
the way he believes in healing the order, but he made himself the worst enemy of this dream.
Someone on discord called Holt "The greatest rider of all time" and lmao no
If you want that- you could pick Quintus, the one who led the riders at their darkest time in history, and the only surviving paragon of the worst incursion ever.
Or that emerald paragon (forgot her name) who grabbed the entirety of the emerald force in the order to cure as much of the earth as possible until her very spirit was crippled.
You could squeeze in TALIA and even Adaskar before Holt.
But Holt has one thing over all these legendary leaders (At least of his time): his mark is undeniable.
Adaskar fell an Elder but that is a feat far too big and too removed for the average rider to envision. Talia restarted the ventures into the depths as quarter of world fight her over it- but with the scourge having control over emerald magic, her legend might be overshadowed by Vald's breaking the final boundary and whomever figure out the cave-ins issue; the ones who will make the ventures count.
Holt? the world doesn't even know what they are in yet. After the scourge and the Order turned obsolete, and the living forgot what the blight even is, they will still need to contend with every new magic that a mere pot boy thought they deserve to be sung.
miller's oxymoron:
talia is a victim of holt's rapid egotism who can't do anything about the justice system that dehumanises an entire class of her people. and less so about the nobles who would support this system with their very lives.
she also -she and no one else. remember that it is HER- can establish a full-on election system that respects everyone voices. from the red range to the sunset sea. nobles who?
oh and these two statements happed within 6 months.
and that what talia believes as the biggest challenge to her people's freedom is that they can't trust 2/3 of the population to migrate occasionally for the sake of their very lives until after defeating the scourge (an easy task that only had been failed for a 1000 years) so her subservient subjects should keep having their heritage name and wealth controlled by the nobles. no abating no reprieve ever the nobles delegant servants.
i get the story trying to argue how petty for human to fight among themself and all that.
but eh. if miller gave talia other than burning innocents in their own home AND that thrall is an elder-killer tier threat with the only forces who can even look at him busy with an even pettier wars, and lord jocquel has no option but to share in them. i would agree
but he did all that. so how wrong it is to leave the paragons to deal with the threat while you handle what (very reasonably) appear as a tyrant turning magic against mortal defenseless men?
"they knew and fought us anyway" the should. they were right.
everyday we get closer to neveh the inheritor of ice's domain.
+ i hope and i pray that she goes back to eso. not to lead with him but to lounge about and annoy dowid together.
they did their duty and they earned retirement in full.
adaskar "nothing is certain except for death" holding azarin in his dying moment & holt's "death make mockery of power" cradling dying vald like he did his dad.
vs
vald and talia willing their eso & pyra to hang on.
Ardor/Talia/Dowid: setting in awkward silence at the "I failed my loved one(s) and all I'm now is guilty conscious" thereby meeting.
i don't know what to make of these but they are neat parallels nonetheless
rake waking up from a dream of his childhood feeling his 100 year long draconic form alien and awkward. -> talia's voice tearing earth as if a dragon roared -> holt fighting like a dragon tearing and biting until his opponents is nothing but mangled flesh.
~
quintus of aldunie “Night has fallen, without moon or stars, but none of us know all ends. All may burn or yet flourish. There can be no despair." -> adaskar died in protection of falcaer and after felling an elder, his blade and burial isn't in any order hall, but in ancient forum in which the citizens of Aldunei once gathered to vote. -> holt and ash's are the first wielder of moonlight, song of the night and banisher of the scourge.
There is a minor Adaskar/Talia/Holt parallel: all of them do hear and do pay attention to what Ferruccio says.
But it is only Holt who make an effort to engage with him.
The Warden of Rain huffed a breath, which became fog around them. “I wish you could. Anything to stop this carnage.” “If I can overcome these limitations, there may yet be a chance.” “You must do so quickly, young rider. Once our Elder recovers, his retribution will be swift.”
vald 100 years ago: already a paragon, a process infamously decades long.
warden: hello 300 years old hatchling.
