"So, you're supposed to be the new Heylin Lord? Or Lady? I knew someone else who'd call herself the queen of it, so I just wanna make sure on terminology here."
“Mh?” The menacing scientist looks up from a chemical experiment. “I am a Lord. I killed for this title,” xe says, returning attention to the test tubes of red liquids in hand. “If this Queen you speak of is Wuya then a Lord has ways to make even the royals bend a knee. But someone like you already knew that, right, Spicer?
“Now then,” the glass tubes clink as they are returned to a rack. “I didn’t invite you here to discuss titles. I invited you here to ask what you want from me to form a partnership.”

mixed asian characters? good
making canon asian characters part white or changing their ethnicity? making asian characters part white to make them more ‘acceptable’ to a western/mainstream audience? bad
This is how my blog feels right about now.
It feels like an uphill battle a lot of the time for people to show any empathy for anyone other than themselves. 😔

Barkey and Chaos
“Yes, of course,” the tree says, a root gracefully moving to drop the metallic dome into Kimiko’s hands. “I knew it had to be you based on this alone. You never let it off your person.”
“What exactly is so important about that bit of jewelry anyway?” Chaos asks, crowding in towards Kimiko to get a peek at the pendant.
“As for the other Wu,” Barkey starts. “The Elder Dragons–that’s your future self and comrades–decided that it was in the best interests of the world to scatter the Shen Gong Wu once again in order to maintain universal balance.”
“Something about too much power in one place,” Chaos shrugs. “Kind of makes training easier since I don’t have to learn how to use Wu,” her chest puffs out with pride. “It super sucked for the generation before me. I mean, first you’re gathering Wu and training with them, next you suddenly can’t use them anymore. I bet it was like learning to walk again or something.” A dismissive hand wave.
Her eyebrow arches at Barkey’s statement, but gives him a nod anyway, thankful he managed to recognize her regardless the reason. “Mm, well…it is pretty important.”
Kimiko spots her reflection in the pendants shine, and she’s grateful that at least her appearance doesn’t seem to have changed in the slightest. And that her pendant didn’t seem to have gotten damaged either. She breathes a sigh of relief before holding it out for Chaos to see. “This. I think it’s the reason for my being here.”
She blinks, glancing back and forth between Barkey and Chaos, before giving a single, understanding nod. “That makes sense.” She’d have to ask about the Elder Dragons–that is, her future self and others, at a later, more appropriate time. For now, she will just accept everything told to her and focus on her own current situation. “Oh. Then that must mean you’re…” her attention is on Chaos, finger tips on her chin and a twinkle in her eye, “from the next generation of Dragons?”
She doesn’t bother with acknowledging the last comment Chaos makes. Though, she wasn’t very fond of the way she said it to her. It made it sound like they were helpless without the aide of the magical artifacts. Well, it wasn’t important at the moment.
“It matches your eyes,” Chaos says rather flatly, before tilting her head quizzically. “It looks like a bunch of crescent moons. I got a crescent moon pendant-thing too.” Slender fingers tap a silver crescent clipped to her sash. “Never leave my room without it. I guess we really do have similar tastes.
“As for being from the ‘next generation,’ I’m currently in training to become a Dragon Warrior, but uh, yeah! Current generation. Or future?” How does that work? “If you time traveled that’s kind of confusing.”
“It goes your generation, a new generation, and then Chaos’ generation,” Barkey summarizes for Kimiko. “Chaos’ teachers are your future students.”
“I thought they were Master Ping Pong’s students.”
“Oh, they are. They are also Kimiko’s students.”
“That... doesn’t track, but whatever. If this pendant brought you here, it must be for a reason. Right? I mean, magical objects usually don’t do things without a reason, right? ...right?” Chaos pleads. “Besides, isn’t time travel, like, bad and stuff?” The young teen gasps sharply. “Can Master Taketsu punish his Master for violating the rules?!”
Barkey and Chaos
“Well… that’s, uh–” Barkey starts.
Chaos gasps. “You know Master Omi?!” Vivid eyes go wide with surprise. If her eyebrows arch any higher they’ll go right off her face. “Ah! Of course!” Hands clap together. “You must be Master Kimiko! Though, it’s strange… you don’t look nearly old enough to be her, and your hair is too long and… one color.”
“Someone from another time, perhaps?” Barkey offers.
Chaos blinks before staring almost blankly at Kimiko. Is the child thinking? “But… how? Weren’t the time travel Wu some of the first that were hidden again? I know there are other means,” the young monk’s face strains, as if remembering the sound of nails on a chalk board. “But it doesn’t explain how she got in your branches.”
“M-master?” The word comes out in disbelief. The girl called her a master. She starts frantically waving her hands as she attempts to tell Chaos she’s wrong, or that she has the wrong Kimiko, at the least.
She feels relief at Barkey’s suggestion. She’s quick to point her finger at him and agree. “Yes! That! That’s gotta be it! Something like that…probably…” Her liveliness deflates, her fingers softly tapping at her chin. Her mind goes to the pendant. Did it displace her in time? But the one her sister had… She blinks, suddenly remembering something.
“Barkey!” She pipes up again. “You picked up my pendant, didn’t you? It fell out of your branches.”
Her ears perk up at Chaos’ statement. She turns her head to the girl. Curiosity gleams in her eyes. She has to ask. “You’re hiding the Wu? Why?”
“Yes, of course,” the tree says, a root gracefully moving to drop the metallic dome into Kimiko’s hands. “I knew it had to be you based on this alone. You never let it off your person.”
“What exactly is so important about that bit of jewelry anyway?” Chaos asks, crowding in towards Kimiko to get a peek at the pendant.

if you think that female muses shouldn’t have to be toned down for the comfort of other people?
Female muses don’t have to be easy. They don’t have to be cute, they don’t have to hold back their drama. They aren’t interesting despite their chaotic personality, but because of it.
If you are interested in interacting with female muses who are powerful, multi-layered and complicated, please help me spread this. I want to make a point.
Barkey and…
The root gently hoists Kimiko down to the paved courtyard. Once Kimiko is safely standing, the roots pull away to leave room for people to walk around without having to watch their every step.
“Well, of course I know Chaos. She’s been raised at the temple for her whole life,” a faint chuckle.
The other, this ‘Chaos,’ is another girl, roughly the same age as Kimiko with dark hair pulled up into a ponytail and secured with three metal bands. Her robes are mainly black and red–a swap of the usual red and black of Xiaolin monks.
“Don’t remind me, Barkey,” she groans. The girl studies Kimiko, head cocked to one side, index finger and thumb mashing a pouty lower lip. Red eyes are quizzical, but have a glint of mischief in them. “You look… kind of familiar, but I can’t quite put my finger on it…”
“Raised here?” Her shoulders slump. If she was raised here, then how come they had never come across each other? The age difference between them didn’t seem to be very large. She looks up at the tree with an inquisitive brow, then back to the girl in question. Even her robes were different from her own red and white.
“And you don’t look familiar at all.” She shook her head. Aside from your vividly red eyes, came an after thought. She crossed her arms and leaned a bit forward, her eyes squinting to scrutinize the other. She first focused on her eyes, as if they would reveal everything she currently wanted to know, then slowly moved down. Maybe…maybe there is something familiar about her. But, maybe not. Maybe she was just looking too hard and seeing what would help her make sense of this.
It scratched at her brain that something was off about her current situation, strange girl aside. She straightens up, attention turning back to Barkey. “So…is she like an Omi situation?” She asks.
“Well... that’s, uh--” Barkey starts.
Chaos gasps. “You know Master Omi?!” Vivid eyes go wide with surprise. If her eyebrows arch any higher they’ll go right off her face. “Ah! Of course!” Hands clap together. “You must be Master Kimiko! The seifu seem to take Jack’s request to leave as their cue to have a staring match. If one could even call it that since Ava hasn’t once opened her eyes. Taketsu still glares sternly at her.
“Ava, you know we can’t. Much longer and he will start to alter the timeline. I can’t–” Taketsu pauses as Ava’s smile widens. The Master inhales deeply through his nose, setting his snack down. “I can’t allow that to happen. And what can we even do if he finds out about… you know?”
“Taku, it’s fine. We–” A loud crash shakes dust and a bit of rock from the ceiling. The two adults have no reaction.
“Another tantrum?” Taketsu asks, shoving the last of the apple into his mouth. Now upright, he stands beside Jack.
“Not this time,” Ava sounds concerned. Her strong brows knit together with worry and a small frown tugs her lips down. “You might need to get that.”
“It might be too early for a second one. I’ll see about something else though. Geez, and here I was hoping to keep my workshop private,” Taketsu bemoans, rubbing the back of his head. “Come on, Jack. I suppose it can’t be helped in a situation like this.”
“WHAT was THAT–???” Jack flicks his gaze upwards as the ceiling rumbles loudly. So many things going on at once! And as far as Jack was concerned, Taketsu and Ava were still speaking in riddles. If Jack were in a better position to DEMAND information, that’s exactly what he would do. But he couldn’t–obviously. A rough sigh escaped through his teeth.
“Guys, you lost me. I mean, one thing’s for sure, I’m not trying to MESS UP your timeline, here–” Probably a lie. “But I won’t even have a chance to screw you guys over if I’m allowed to leave, so I’d think that would be to your advantage.” Confused and slightly anxious, he forced himself up and moved closer to Taketsu. “Well, I think I’m supposed to follow YOU.”
“Well... I am the second safest place to be in the whole Temple,” Taketsu humblebrags with a slight shrug. “And you’re a tinkering inventor of sorts, right? I just thought you’d jump at the chance to see another like-minded person’s workshop. Plus, I need a genius master of robotics to help me on this one.” The Master places a mighty hand on Jack’s shoulder. “Can you do that, Jack?” Another rumble shakes the rafters. “Scratch that. Looks like you don’t have much of a choice. Ava, can you do anythi--?!”
The woman almost seems to be glowing, entranced in a deep meditative state. “It is up to you and Jack now.” Stating the obvious much?
??
Now this was odd. It felt like there was suddenly a person in Barkey’s branches, but presently no one was outside. He shifts, hoping whatever it is will be dislodged or frightened enough to get out. Something glimmering falls to the stone tiles with a clatter. Curious, a root carefully picks up–!? This… can’t be! Then that means–!
“Kimiko? Kimiko, is that you?” Roots snake through the thicker areas of foliage, searching for the human. “Here, let me help you down.”
Best to send a message to Ava about this. Ava…? Ava, can you hear me?
‘Yes.’
We have a visitor. It seems to be Kimiko, bu–
‘Kimiko!? But she isn’t due back here until–’
Until the end of the month, I know. She has the pendant in her possession.
‘Oh… oh dear. Then we mustn’t–’
“Who’s that?” Comes the voice of a girl from down below.
“Oh, Cha-Chaos, this is…”
A tilt of the head. She stopped mid way through her descent. “Barky?” How strange…Had the pendant just teleport her to another part of the temple? She spots the grand tree’s roots climbing up in search of her and carefully makes her way towards them. “I’m over here.” She says, hand reaching to touch the lively root.
At the sound of another, but unfamiliar voice, she looks down, blinking. Another tilt of the head. Chaos? This was definitely a person she didn’t know…but Barky seemed to know them. And showed no hostility. Which means they were welcomed here. But she didn’t know them. Her brow scrunched up, and she tugged at the root to bring her down already and to quench her curiosity. She spoke to the tree in a whisper. “You know them?”
The root gently hoists Kimiko down to the paved courtyard. Once Kimiko is safely standing, the roots pull away to leave room for people to walk around without having to watch their every step.

“Oh, I’m very happy, Pah–” She doesn’t even finish the syllable. There’s a minute pause as Ava corrects herself. The hug dissipates as slender hands move to the boy’s shoulders. “Jack. I’m very happy, Jack.” A light pat and squeeze of his shoulders before she moves opposite Taketsu.
The man reaches out for one of the baked apples and starts stuffing his face. He isn’t even halfway done with the first before he takes a second one. Ava smiles at Taketsu, bemused. Lips smack as the Master finishes the first apple.
“Go home?” He glances to Ava, whose lips purse as her head tilts slightly. “I… suppose you can. But, don’t you want your snack?”
“It’s alright if you don’t want it, Jack! Taku needs to eat more.”
Taketsu chokes slightly. “I–hngh–I do not. I eat enough on my own.”
“Taku, this snack is turning into your late brunch.”
“Well…“ he reaches for a third, mouth still partially full. “These turned out really good.”
“Thank you,” Ava says, resting her chin on bridged fingers. “But are you sure you’ve seen enough, Jack?”
Taketsu’s chewing pauses while he shoots an annoyed glare at Ava who ignores him.
Jack was blown away with confusion. Ava was treating him like a rewarded CHILD, not an evil genius. And she kept insisting on calling him JACK, so she must know who he truly is. Why bother with the hugs and sentimental crap? She should know he’s dangerous. And what was PAH–? Ava had been about to call him something, to state something else that she didn’t finish. Frustration clawed within Jack’s chest.
So that he wouldn’t be considered rude, Jack bit into the fruit snack offered to him. His eyes lit up. It was delicious! “INCREDIBLE,” he said out loud, his mouth full. Maybe, because of this awesome treatment, he shouldn’t set that tree on fire – yep. He’d leave it alone, for now.
“I came here looking for something else,” Jack admitted. And leaving the statement that vague, it was actually TRUE. He came here looking for an entire vault of Wu, only to be told they were being scattered again. “The thing I’m seeking–don’t think I can find it here.” Jack stood and bowed slightly. “Really appreciate the hospitality and all. Not what I expected from you guys. My outlook is definitely altered on a few things there. I’ll never FORGET it. But I’d like to leave as soon as you’ll let me.”
The seifu seem to take Jack’s request to leave as their cue to have a staring match. If one could even call it that since Ava hasn’t once opened her eyes. Taketsu still glares sternly at her.
