(This isn't an explicit prediction of what would happen if girls got stranded on an island, but moreso what if the book commented on girls the way it comments on boys. I'm well aware that several points are informed by stereotypes but that's the point)
I was doing some research for an essay I'm writing on lotf and saw that Golding himself said that, if it were just girls on the island, none of the events that occurred in the book would happen; that the book is commenting on the inherent evil of men, and that women are, well, superior to men in his eyes. (Obviously there's way more to it).
Me and my friend had a discussion and I have to disagree with Golding.
I think that a group of girls, especially young girls, could be incredibly malicious to eachother under these circumstances.
While men wouldn't be present on the island, I think girls still have internalised patriarchal standards that they hold themselves, and other girls, to. It could lead to a lot of cruelty, especially if Piggy was a girl. Women are much more heavily criticised for their weight and seen as "undesirable" so i think the treatment of Piggy would have the potential to be even worse if they were all girls.
The dynamics of power, who holds it, how it shifts, and how it is enforced, would be massively decided based on these standards. Beauty standards are also another thing, and girls are held to high standards on their appearance, social exclusions, bullying, cruelty, all of it would be much more prominent due to the strict expectations, particularly teenage, girls feel a need to live up to.
Think of friendships too. I think friendship between girls can be experienced a lot differently to how boys experience them. Girls seem to have more emotional intimacy and openness within their friendships, while men (seen through Jack in the book) often hide their weaknesses from even their friends. I think the betrayals that occur could be amplified further through this.
Obviously, this is based on massive generalisations of the two genders and a likely amplified difference. But I feel that, if the book were to be ABOUT the gender, then this is how it could differ from what is already there, while not suggesting that women can't be cruel or evil as Golding suggests. I desperately want to write a fic, book, or just something like this tbh.
