Do you think Collie holds any resentment towards the other boys for not joining his revolt?
Yes! But also no! But also absolutely yes!
Listen it's complicated lol, and also I think it kinda ummm Varies On A Boy By Boy Basis.
Like Stebbins for example I don't think Collie particularly expected any help from, not initially at least. I don't think Collie dislikes Stebbins- I think Collie going out of his way to try & hype Stebbins up & get him to join during the Clementine scene shows that he does in fact care about the guy- but I don't think he trusts Stebbins either. Stebbins has at multiple points when he's heard the others shit talking the regime or the Walk or the Major, tried to jump in & tell them to stop, calling their actions dissent, etc. Now we the audience soon learn that this has more to do with Stebbins' desperation for his father's love/approval than any actual loyalty to the regime, but Collie never gets to learn that.
I think Collie likes Stebbins despite himself- he's a funny bitchy weirdo & that matches with Collie's humor well- & respects him even for managing to continue despite his illness, & he does want to save Stebbins as much as he wants to save the other boys, but Stebbins- from Collie's perspective- is someone who's a representation of the regime's Ideal™️, & even as his body's begun to fail him (showing how fake said ideal always was) Stebbins has still continually expressed his loyalty to the Major & his intention to win the Walk the old fashioned way. I think Collie believes that Stebbins has a strong will to live, & that should the tide turn in Collie & the others' favor against the soldiers Stebbins would join them for survival, but he doesn't trust Stebbins to be an ally, he's not someone Collie can call on.
So would Collie resent Stebbins for not helping him?
I don't think so. His expectations for Stebbins were low in the first place in this regard & you can't really resent someone who hasn't disappointed you (& in fact behaved exactly as you'd expected them to).
Pete however....Yeah. Yeah Collie would resent Pete. Collie TRUSTED Pete, believed in him, called out his name specifically, because Pete started the "Fuck The Long Walk" chant, Pete's had a hard life & knows how absolutely fucked this whole system is so surely he'd want to help Collie fight it (plus pragmatically speaking he knows McVries knows how to tussle), Pete clearly cares so much for all the other boys too (& in the conversation directly preceding Collie making his move he hears Pete & Art clearly being very reticent about Stebbins' insistence that they all stop helping each other) & ofc anybody with working eyes- which Collie very much has- can see how Pete's been doing everything he can to keep Ray alive & if the Walk continues only one of them would get to live, so why wouldn't Pete take the chance to try & save Ray & his other friends as well??
Collie clearly feels like...A real sense of kinship with & admiration for Pete that I'm struggling to properly put into words here since I'm at work rn (I 💖 stealing company time) but that kinship was never reciprocated the way Collie believed it was. Not that Pete disliked him or anything, he liked Collie, & in other circumstances they could & I think would eventually become besties over time...But not here. Not now. Another time, another place....
Pete wasn't going to do anything that put Ray at risk, even if taking that risk is ultimately what could've saved Ray- but Pete couldn't see that yet, & Pete is still trying to be something of a pacifist, to distance himself from the violence & trauma of his past & find the light...So Pete was never going to help Collie. Collie believed in him though, & Pete let him down, so yeah he'd hold a lot of resentment over that.
Ray I think Collie also would hold some resentment towards- just not as much as with Pete just because Collie didn't have the same kind of admiration for Ray that he did for Pete.
Now to preface I don't think Collie knows about Ray's wish to kill the Major- if he did he'd be a LOT more resentful & pissed off towards Ray (valid imo) & he also may have called for Ray's help instead of Pete's in the first place (would this have made a difference??? I go back & forth on it..IF Ray helped Pete would help & so would the others but idk tbh I think Ray still panics & keeps walking)- but he does know that Ray holds more theoretically radical politics that he's spoken about pretty openly & SHOULD be aligned with & helping his rebellion so it's disappointing to watch Ray panic & walk away with his hands over his ears since from Collie's pov it's like oh....So you're all talk no action. Okay then.
However he doesn't have the same high opinion of Ray that he does of Pete. Collie likes Ray just fine & cares about him- even though Ray lives in a dipshit state- but Ray lives a very different life to the kind of lives he & Pete have lived, Ray's life hasn't been easy by any means ofc- none of their lives are that's why they're all Death Walking- but he's been able to navigate the systems they're all forced to live within very differently as a white man, & he's a bit naive, & also on a purely pragmatic note imo Collie does not think that white boy knows how to tussle. Ray also let Collie down, but not to the same extent as Pete, so the resentment would be a bit lesser, though still present, I think.
His feelings towards Art would also be complicated!
Of all the boys, Art is who Collie is genuinely, mutually closest with- they can be seen in the background comforting one another (Art comforts Collie when the tank crushes that boy's legs, Collie comforts Art when Barkovitch kills himself), Collie grabs onto Art to dance with him during the Clementine scene & the two spend a lot of time walking together (9 times outta 10 when Art isn't with Ray & Pete, he's over with Collie).
Collie feels connected to all the boys but Art is the only one who really, truly reciprocates that connection & Art cares for Collie just as much as Collie cares for him.
So I do think Collie expected Art to help him, & Art does try- he's beginning to actively hemorrhage but Art still tries to go back to Collie, to be with him, until Ray grabs Art & moves him- I think given Art's state he genuinely didn't understand what was happening until it was too late, & once he did know his immediate instincts were to go & try & be with Collie anyways.
But I don't think Collie got to see that :(
I think if Collie knew that Art was bleeding & confused & still tried to get to him once he realized what was happening then Collie would hold absolutely no bad feelings there, but since I don't think Collie knew...
I think with Art maybe "resentment" isn't the right word for Collie's feelings. I think Art seemingly not helping him & just walking on probably hurt more than the others not helping- more even than Pete ignoring his call- because Collie & Art got to spend a lot of time together & were each there for one another emotionally, they were vulnerable & close with one another in a way that he & Pete weren't. Collie's death was so very very lonely & it must have felt all the lonelier when- from his perspective- the person he'd comforted & been comforted by in turn before, his closest friend on the Walk, just kept going without a second thought.
And that isn't the reality of course, the reality is Art wanted to help Collie & be there for him, he cared for Collie, Collie was loved, Collie had made at least one real true friend on the Walk & if Art Baker had gotten his way he would have helped Collie Parker & at the very least held him until the end. But Collie didn't get to know that.
This is long & messy but in conclusion- Collie would hold resentment towards some of the boys but the feelings would all be very complicated! Just because there's resentment & hurt doesn't mean the love & the care he had for them goes away!
