lynels were troublesome creatures
more often than not, link would have to face one or two off per week — scaring them away from the princess. every time, though, zelda would attempt to document something, anything, about the creatures. they were mysterious, & often kept to themselves.
silver lynels, like the one that had turned it’s rearing, terrifying, head to her, were especially self-reserved. ( not to mention, dangerous ) . body freezes, as if frozen in time, to merely stare at the creature before her. fear fills every crease & crevice known, making a pit in her stomach.
years upon years of study, research, & observations tell her to bow low, her posture abnormally straight & rigid, yet she shows no harm towards the creature — staying calm & collected. creature or not, it had a heart.
she only hopes she can find it.
they stare at each other, rigid and solid like two startled does that aren’t sure which one of them is the real danger. his weapons are heavy where they sit, muscles twitching to curl clawed fingers in preparation. his bow slung over his back with a quiver full of shock arrows, a flameblade and shield hanging on a belt he’s got around his chest... and this human has nothing. one shot, one slash, even one well-placed kick could easily take her life. and something tells him to do just that; kill her. while the dark offers tempting strength and comfort, the light that he can feel within her threatens to strike out at him. to slip into his mind and destroy him from the inside out. but why does such a power slumber within one so small...?
if she were a bit bigger, he may consider her a meal. (as she is, she would barely make an appetizer.)
when she moves, he immediately reaches for his bow, a paw-like hand wrapping around the leather wrappings that cushion a grip, yet he does not fire. she bows to him, and a snarl rumbles in his throat at the movement.
slowly, ever so slowly, he replaces his bow. front legs bend ever so slight. he bows back.

maraudo wolves are annoying, at best. sure, they’re smart enough to leave monsters alone, but that doesn’t mean that their incessant howling isn’t something that grates on ta’kor’s nerves all the time.
but this wolf... no. it’s alone. it’s quiet, too. and there’s just something about it that, even though it’s behaving, makes ta’kor snarl in irritation.
hooves scuff divots into the ground beneath him as hands twitch towards weapons, red eyes narrowing at the beast as he lets forth an annoyed roar.

@failureheir
it feels as if a rope has tightened around his neck, and he is at the mercy of its pull. at least, that is the best way ta’kor can think of to describe this odd feeling. this beckoning call that reaches from the darkness, luring him out of his seclusion and into the lands of hyrule. he is helpless to fight against it, for whenever he answers that call, he feels himself get stronger.
it unsettles him, how easily he gave in, and it’s his pride that gives him pause now. the herd of other lynels, bokoblins, lizalfos, and monsters he’s never seen before has continued without him. it’s just as well; he knows not where they’re going, nor where they’ll end up.
he stands at the hills of hyrule field, red eyes cast towards the distant castle. that’s where this call is coming from. that’s where it is. yet he can sense something else, something near the opposite of that dark energy, and it’s close.
ears twitch where they’re buried in his thick, dark mane, and his head whips towards the sound of careful feet parting the grass. towards that sense of light.
...what is a hylian girl doing here?

TERRITORIES;
lynels are extremely territorial. they claim territory by simply finding a spot of land they enjoy, or fighting other lynels for it. some of this fighting can lead to mating; if the fight is a draw, the lynels will co-govern the territory and create a herd to rule it, if they are able.
territories are kept until a lynel dies, whether from being killed or old age, and then they are free to grab for other lynels. some lynels will share their territory with other monsters to create a system of trade and mutualism (as ta’kor does with the coliseum), but lynels often prefer to have space to themselves.
the territories claimed by the lynels range from the gerudo highlands to the farthest north of hyrule’s borders. territories usually cover 10+ acres, though the centers of these territories are the most intensely protected and where they usually rest. male lynels typically patrol the territory while female lynels will hunt and keep the herd in good standing.
I get that LoZ monsters just kinda hatch out of nothingness as giant bad boys but… Imagine baby Lynel… Baby cat and horsey… But also this:

COMMUNICATION;
lynels communicate to each other with body language using their hands, tails, and legs. they can also communicate with a variety of roars, growls, snarls, and purrs. lynels that live near human encampments can learn to understand the language, and they can even learn to speak it. when they do speak, however, it’s often garbled due to the build of their mouths and throats. (think something like this, but a bit better at pronunciation. kind of like trying to talk with your mouth full.)
while lynels can not speak proper language, they can still communicate with other monster races. it seems to be something from ganon’s magic; they can understand each other simply even if they speak nothing similar at all.
BIRTH;
once a lynel is pregnant, she will carry the child in her womb for roughly one year, and she will give birth to a single cub. the cub will immediately be able to walk, and within a few days, will be able to run and have control over the more fine motor skills involving its hands.
lynel families typically only have one or two children. they remain sexually active, but after the birth of one child, successful pregnancies are very hard to achieve.
during the pregnancy, the female lynel will isolate herself on her and her mate’s territory. the mate will exhibit higher rates of violence, killing anything that dare cross on their territory at this time. the female will stop hunting, almost entering a time of hibernation as her mate and other female herd members take care of her. (often her and her mate’s mothers)
infant lynels will nurse until the age of four, though will start eating meat at the age of one. they will be trained in combat until they are ten, at which point they will leave their home territory to take one for themselves and a future mate. once her child is mating, the mother will join the herd to take care of the new mother. after the birth, she will return home, and the cycle will continue.
MATING;
lynels mate for life, rearing their children until they leave to claim their own territory and mates. once the children are gone, the mating lynels will maintain to protect their territory until they die. once a mate dies, the other will never find another.
lynels will mate outside of their class, though it is rare. the mating process is violent, as the mates will battle each other to determine their strength. it is highly uncommon for a red-maned lynel, for instance, to mate a silver lynel. white-manes have been known to mate silver, and blue-maned have been known to mate red-maned. the children will almost always take the traits of the mother, meaning that weaker male lynels often try to mate their way up.
mating prime for lynels is between the ages of ten and twenty-five. once a lynel hits thirty, it is very unlikely for them to be able to find a mate that is their own age, as their lifespans usually extend until their mid-forties or fifties.
NAME;
lynel names are given upon birth, creating a singular name that identifies the lynel as an individual and also claims their herd.
in ta’kor’s instance, TA is the name of his herd and KOR is his individual name.
all lynels have contracted names like this, and they take their herd name from their mothers. in this way, their bloodline is easily recognizable by other lynels and is an easy way to track which territories belong to which herds.
for instance: ta’kor was born to is mother, ta’hal, and his father, lo’mir. when ta’kor has children, they will take the name of their mother as well as one of their own.
