rewatched a bit of s2 and honestly it’s so easy to understand why will fell in love with mike because if someone looked at you like that, took care of you like that, and asked you how you were feeling like that, i’d fucking fall in love too
Kind of really need people to understand that Will's earring is on his right ear specifically cause it used to be considered the "gay ear". Like I get that an earring in general is cute but when people put it on his left ear in fanart I'm always a little bit like nooo you put it on the straight side and Will's earring is decidedly Not on the straight side. I know that today this doesn't really matter anymore but in the 80s and 90s it was a bigger deal. Like straight guys would make sure to get an earring on the left side cause that wasn't the Gay Side. Please is anybody listening to me???
Oh this is important. People may not use the “gay ear” code nowadays in quite the same way, but the use of jewelry as queer coding absolutely continues.
And honestly… who knows what will make a comeback. Apparently the hanky code has been making rounds on social media again lately lol
We also forget just how loaded earrings on men used to be. Back then, men wearing earrings at all wasn’t considered particularly “normal” in many places, and the “right ear” thing became part of a recognizable social signal back then.
Hell, my father was still eyeing men weirdly for wearing earrings well into the 2000s.
Will would have definitely wanted to wear it on the right side.
i want to be absolutely explicit here, because people keep trying to retrofit excuses onto choices that were fully contemporary and fully avoidable: the duffers were not “working within censorship codes.” they weren’t navigating some invisible 1950s moral panic. they made a choice, a contemporary, fully resourced, fully optional choice, to handle will’s storyline through a homophobic lens. and as someone who spent a significant portion of my degree studying queer media history, i’m not misusing that word.
what they did to one of the core four, the only canonically gay member of that group, was disgraceful. that coming out scene is a farce. it’s not just clumsy; it’s structurally homophobic. you do not stage a coming out moment with twelve characters in the room unless you fundamentally misunderstand (or disregard) the emotional, historical, and cinematic weight of queer disclosure and coming out narratives. it’s the opposite of intimacy, the opposite of safety, the opposite of respect. it’s a spectacle. it’s humiliation dressed up as catharsis.
and the blocking makes it worse. the camera doesn’t protect will. it exposes him. it treats his vulnerability like a plot device, not a person. even noah’s performance, which is extraordinary, can’t salvage a scene that was built on such a fundamentally hostile foundation. the text, the staging, the proxemics, the emotional architecture: all of it betrays him.
people can debate intent all they want, but the impact is right there on screen. and it’s ugly.
A little gift for @iwill-imike💙💛congrats on surpassing 100k words!
Made a cover for It's just "art" because this fic deserves all the love.

People get mad when we say that Mike badly written but that's the truth, saying the opposite is saying that the Duffers did a great job with his writing and let's be for real they did not and they do not deserve any credit for that.
And that doesn't mean that I hate him, I love my headcanon Mike Wheeler, but canon Mike is not a good character and we need to accept it.
Saying that Mike wheeler is well written is giving the message to writers and producers that we want more fictional characters that are like him (bad character development, inconsistent in his behavior, plot holes, a bad boyfriend and a bad friend) and we do not need more characters like that in media, especially male characters.
slice of a happy life
I dislike a lot how Mike and El treated Will when they went to Rink o Mania, the way they said "today is for us" when Will was with them??? They could have gone to a date after spending time the three of them but they preferred to ignore Will, that scene makes me want to cry every time I watch it, it makes me extremely sad to see Will because I relate with that experience and it's horrible. Season 4 is just made to keep torturing Will with a new plot that went nowhere and was thrown to the trash when they didn't need it anymore.
And the way they never apologize for that it's insane, Mike apologizes for being an asshole when they fought, but they never apologize to Will for ignoring him.
To me that's so out of character for El, even though I understand she wanted to see her boyfriend I don't see at all that she would ignore her brother like that, the brother that she lived for half a year, went to the same school and was always with her helping her? Nah that's not my Jane.
In general the Duffers started destroying their characters in season 3 and it just went worse and worse...
This is a story set in the 1890s, similar to the setting of Van Helsing. A series of murders occur in Hawkins, with the victims' blood drained (this isolated town is unaware of the dangerous creatures from the outside world). Will is the forensic pathologist in charge of the investigation. (Of course, you can all guess who the killer is.)
Lucas and Max are a renowned vampire hunter couple who come to hunt down the "killer."
Spelling mistakes? I guarantee neither of us saw those at 3:00 AM Monday Morning.
i bring a sort of “they switch!” vibe to the top/bottom discourse that the fandom doesn't really like
I see people talking about the wasted potential of Mike and Robin being a duo but Mike and Vickie... Since Vickie is bi it could've helped Mike realize that liking boys is also an option even though he dated a girl before
The way the Duffers did Mike protect Will in season 2 just because Mike lost Eleven and he didn't want to lose another friend... Like they really made Mike's personality only about El since the beginning omfg... They really thought that they made Mike be a great character by just being Eleven's boyfriend 🤡
It's made worse when you realize that Mike taking care of Will in season 2 is probably not only what made Will fall for him, but also led him to think he was special to Mike, that he had a chance.
But it was only ever about El, apparently. Will going missing in the Upside Down was the best thing to ever happen to Mike, canonically, according to the Duffers. He life didn't start until then, after all.
It's insane how they destroyed their friendship after season 2, they keep telling us that Mike and Will are childhood best friends but they made Mike's actions apparently never really care about Will after all, which it doesn't make sense by the way he was in season 1.
It's wild because there's no consistency. Mike oscillates between caring about El and only El to treating Will in a wholly unique way, but it's supposedly not meant to have any real significance beyond tricking Will into thinking Mike likes him.
The whole thing seems meant to make Will look like a fool. Mike was only ever a good friend to Will. You just have to ignore the fact that he treats Will very differently than he does anyone else and can't manage to manage having both Will and El in his life.
Nevermind the narrative parallels between El and Will, right down to her joining his family and dressing like him. None of that ever meant anything, apparently, just like Will never really meant anything to Mike.
