Sticking along my current discussion relating to music videos, one of my absolute favorite music videos of all time is that for Take On Me by a-ha. The design of this video, mixing live action with a pencil sketch art style gives the video of truly iconic look. The song itself has stood the test of time and fits perfectly with the wonderful music video that was created for it.

Speaking of wonderful music videos, the video above from the legend George Michael is a wonderful example of how a music video can serve to express the meaning of a song more than the lyrics can. Unheard of at the time, George Michael and David Fincher decided to create a music video which did not have George Michael in it. Instead, they elected to hire male and female supermodels to sing the song in the video. This was a direct reaction to George Michael’s beliefs that MTV had caused music to become too looks centric. For this reason, George Michael elected to put a bunch of attractive people in the video instead of himself, as he felt modern day media influenced by MTV meant that the artists talents did not matter anymore. Following this trend, we saw the destruction of jukeboxes and guitars, as well as the burning of George Michael’s trademark leather jacket in the video. This music video is truly iconic for it’s desire to combat and fight the new era of music which was being ushered in under MTV.

The following is one of the most iconic music videos of all time. It currently remains the only music video preserved in the Library of Congress. The theme’s of the video are what make it outstanding. From the dark lighting that lasts throughout the video, the performance carries a dark theme to it. Despite this atmosphere, the quick and flashy moments performed by those in the video serve to act as a counter to the background setting and provide more of the intended meaning to the video. The goal of the song is to provide a bright outlook on an otherwise dark subject. This is exemplified by the way the characters in the video have a white light shining on them, serving as a contrast to the dark background surrounding them. This light brings light (haha) to the true intention of the song and the performance, the characters and their experiences of enjoyment.

This is an example of the style of video camera’s used on an old school TV show. There is a noticeable shift between seen then and quality seen in shows today. The style of recording has shifted in modern times, and it has caused a shift in the direction of entertainment as a result.

The following is an example of a rubbing of the ground that anybody could create. It makes use of the texture of the environment to create texture in a sketch. I did this particular rubbing in my place of work. Overall I found the experience to be a wonderful means through which to capture aspects of the environment around me and it certainly seems like a useful trick to know how to perform.

These pictures serve as a wonderful means to understand the principles of semiotics. In semiotics, there are three key parts, the signifier, signified, and sign. In basic terms, the signifier is the things that can be seen, touched, heard, or tasted. The signified is the meaning behind the subject in question. The sign is the combination of these elements. In the first image, the signifier would be the circle on top, the horn in the middle, and the arrow on the bottom. The signified would be whatever the symbol is meant to represent. The sign is the combination of these to derive meaning from their combination. In the second image, the signifier is the rhyno, and the wheels, and the body of the car. The signified is the underlying message relating to the power of the vehicle. The sign is the combination of these two to derive meaning that animal + car = good car.

One of my favorite Netflix series at the moment is The Umbrella Academy. It truly has the feel of a movie style to it, with it’s high quality CGI elements and highly developed plot elements. This show serves as a wonderful example of how cinematography and television are beginning to have means that are blurred and no longer necessarily independent from one another. There are some who see this is a negative development, however personally I feel it is a great step forward in terms of artistic development of ideas that can now be presented more fully and completely to people via an episodic style of media.

This picture is a wonderful example of the art of constructed landscape photography. The ability to manipulate objects, angles, and lighting in order to produce an illusion of something being larger than it is allows the artist to be able to take something small and self constructed and make it seem like a larger landscape. This image gives the impression that you are looking over a mountainous region covered in snow with birds in the air, when in actuality you are looking at a small rock covered in salt placed in front of a strategic background.

This is by far my favorite image from the museum of arts and sciences here in Macon. They way the artist used so many different pieces of material with so many of their own individual markings makes it so unique. All of the pieces join together into a heart, representing how are heart is guided and made up of so many different aspects that make us who we truly are.

This movie is a masterpiece in the field of experimental film, through it’s use of painting and scratching of the film to create numerous effects throughout. Many feel this was truly a revolutionary development in the field of experimental film, and credit it for many of the similar works we see today.

Pirates of the Caribbean (Curse of the Black Pearl) - Opening Scene

The first scene of the series, where Elizabeth has a dream/flashback of the time she first met Will Turner.

This intro to Pirate of the Caribbean is a wonderful example of how editing can cause our sense of time and space to become warped. The cuts illustrated in this scene serve to create a jump in time, using a dream as a time capsule to go from when the women is a young child to when she is fully grown. It also takes us from the sea to the mainland space wise.

Wonderful work of by Mark Dion. Serves to fulfill his goal of being a counter to the consumerism we see in so much of our surroundings today, and brings such a natural and welcoming feel to the style he produces.

These are two examples of daguerreotype photography, the first being original and the second being a modern use of the process. This process is significant in that is was the first publicly available photographic process. It made use of imprinting an image on pieces of metal, however was quickly superseded by the various processes which followed. In modern times, artists like Takashi Arai make use of the process to bring artistic representation to such an original style of photography.

The pictures above serve as two examples of different reasons photographs can be taken. The first is a picture taken of a natural environment in order to appreciate the beauty and art of the scene. The second image serves as a means to simply document and record a party that had happened. There are similarities in that the two serve to capture an image, however they differ in the fact that one has more of an artistic goal in mind whereas the other is focused entirely on recording. It is hard to image the second image fitting into the category of the first, however that argument can be made for the first as it could simply be a means through which to record a particular scene.

This image serves as a perfect example of the theme of the study of Hermeneutics. The idea behind this field is the fact that images can have multiple meanings, and it is up to the viewer to derive their own personal meaning from the image. This particular image can either be seen as a duck or a rabbit, it all remains a matter of perspective.

Continuing on the theme of female artists that I started in my post regarding the ability of art to draw value from its meaning, I would like to highlight another wonderful work of art by a female artist. Camille Rose Garcia has managed to cement herself as a central figure in the genre of pop surrealism with images such as the one above. The very dreamlike images put forth a sort of fairytale like style, and often seems to walk the line between life and death as well as reality and illusion.

This comparison serves as a prime example of how photography has changed the underlying authority of art in modern times. As seen above, the painting The Scream by Edvard Munch is an original painting which has lost some of it's natural uniqueness by the ability of such works as Home Alone to be able to reproduce the iconic image for their own means. One of the things that had always made art special was the ability of it to be one of a kind, however photography has shifted this power away and has thrown us into a post-unique era of art.
