Lately I miss her even when I’m sitting right next to her Sometimes it feels like she’s already gone Today she asked me to take her home I wish more than anything I could make that happen Neither of us want to accept that this is where she needs to be Last week I walked through my childhood home and I passed by her empty recliner I realized that she’ll probably never be home again But her presence was there It was all around me and I felt sick to my stomach Now home is wherever she is And I have to somehow accept that this is our new normal But if new normal is watching her and the other people around her rot in that nursing home then I want no part of it In some cases these places are supposed to be a relief But this isn’t the case for us This is not what she deserves I wake up in the middle of the night and my mind races with ways I could fix it My chest is permanently tight Will things ever get better? We’ve been fighting an endless uphill battle But I’ll do anything for her Just to make her living hell a little easier

I have these dreams where she’s healthy again like when I was a little She’s walking around the house She’s setting the table for dinner She’s sketching Lake Michigan at the beach She’s standing at the foot of my bed talking to me I feel relieved It’s finally over and she’s back to living her life again I’m back to living mine But then I wake up...
