There are plenty of international students who are currently studying in the USA. There are also job opportunities too who as they are all being given a chance to work for a certain amount of time. Finding fresher jobs for opt students after graduation is not that easy process for international students. They must plan for their job search as to not waste time and find proper jobs and here are some tips that will be helping you to find jobs as an international student. 1) Explore for the best job opportunities out there: There are limited employment opportunities for international students in the US and not everyone gets jobs all the time. Firstly you need to make a good profile of yourself, accumulate good GPA, certifications and then explore the job opportunities that are best for you. It can be challenging for international students in the US to search for jobs for f1 students and it is not that easy for companies as well to hire international students. How to go about Job Search for International Students in the USA-2

In my previous blog, I had mentioned how the USA is the land of opportunities. Students and immigrants are flocking to the land of promising dreams in large numbers. There are plenty of international students who are currently studying in the USA. There are also job opportunities too who as they are all being given a chance to work for a certain amount of time. Finding fresher jobs for opt students after graduation is not that easy process for international students. They must plan for their job search as to not waste time and find proper jobs and here are some tips that will be helping you to find jobs as an international student. We will continue from where we last left.

5) Finding on-campus employment: J-1 and F-1 students both are eligible to work on on-campus opt job opportunities while not disturbing their academics. The on-campus employment opportunities are limited for international students at most schools and can have little varied on university on-campus employment rules. Make sure to choose a job that will give you better learning experiences and valuable skills that will look good on your resume too. Try to choose a job that will eventually lead you to a better job. 

  6) Get a good off-campus internship in your majors itself: So it is good that you start off with a good job in CPT which is curricular training practicals internship that is given exclusively to F1 visa students. The CPT will be requiring you that your internship is based on your major and you also may receive academic credit for your internship. Make sure you create the right job profile as per your major because as an international student you will be required to do a job or internship in the major area. Make sure to choose the job that will be relevant to the major students. Once you know you are eligible to take up the internship then you need to begin to look for CPT employment or internships. 

  7) Make sure to apply for optional practical training: You can now apply for the OPT which is optional practical training after being enrolled in the university for at least a period of 9 months and you can not begin employment until you receive the EAD which is the Employment Authorization Document from the USCIS. OPT will be giving a good opportunity for international students to gain practical experience in their major area of study, under certain restrictions, for an initial period of up to a year. Companies in the US prefer to hire under the CPT and OPT to employ the international students rather than the H-1B even though they are in the position just for a year because they need not pay extra feed to hire an international student who is on the OPT. In my previous blog, I have mentioned about the journey of top immigrants who like Elon Musk who is the CEO of SpaceEx and Tesla first came to the US as an international student. He came to the US as a masters student and continued to embark on an entrepreneurial journey in the areas of the internet, renewable energy etc. Mr. Sundar Pichai, the present CEO of Google came here to pursue his masters worked his way through the US H-1B visa to becoming a US citizen and becoming the top honcho in the IT world. What is the pattern that we see here? We will continue to analyze it further

The end of the OPT or Optional Practical Training at least the end of the user will be foreclosing another avenue for international students who will be starting the business in the US. The difficulty that the students face can be seen in the story called as Zoosk.

Let us begin with the story.

Zoosk co-founders Mr.Alex Mehr and Mr.Shayan met in Iran as students back in the 90’s and they together dreamed of starting a company in the US. Most of the present entrepreneurs are all immigrants who come to the US which is the land of opportunities offering everyone an equal chance to excel in their respective fields. They come as opt international student and work their way to the top levels.  The trump administration is bent on formulating new rules in effect to serve as a deportation order for most of the international students are set to graduate from US universities. Such an action is not only threatening the role of USA as the center of innovation but also will mean that fewer entrepreneurs and the jobs that they create for the US workers will be much lower.

There are numerous barriers that exist that make it difficult for foreign nationals to remain in the US after they start a company. Most important is that there is no startup visa right now that grants permanent residence a green card to foreign-born entrepreneurs who are starting new US businesses. That is the reason why most of the foreign nationals wait until they get a green card before they launch their venture.

Optional Practical Training is a program that is presently allowing the international students to work for 12 months after graduation and can be extended potentially another 24 months in a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) field. Some international students have used their time on OPT to also start a business and in cases that are most likely able to involve an American as the co-founder, the company can then in turn petition for an H-1B temporary work visa for the international student who can also be an employee of the company. H-1B visa program slows down now under Trump-Final Chapter

The question that will arise now is that why there is the need to get so much foreign labor to get one piece of work done and that too as per statistics when too many employees are either unemployed or underemployed ask many veterans who are in the US and the answer they get is because they are cheap and work longer and more hours. Workers who are in India receive just ¾ of the total number of H-1B visas for the fiscal last year and many outsourcing companies are now focussing on the Information Technology regularly which take up a huge share of the available visas thus sending workers on H-1B sponsorship to other companies as consultants. In my previous blog, I have mentioned how the new administration has dramatically stepped up the scrutiny of the visa applications for all technology workers thus forcing many companies as well as academic institutions to wait for long months to fill the job that is designated for overseas workers. The USCIS is now challenging the work credentials of the applicants this year when compared to previous years and it requires more companies to provide the required percentage of documentation to prove the proposed employees the special skills and this may be filed in the proper rates.

Problems have arisen for companies and employers in the US who are looking forward to employing people on US H-1B visa and they seem to have invested a lot on the time and training. Many of the government requests have been particularly focused on entry-level jobs and these sound to be positions that can be easily filled by American labour and even entry-level roles in technology are said to be highly specialized and the people who have sponsored for the visas are specifically trained for the roles during education or by job consultants in USA.  

The delays may take months and there is no release of any data on how many applications that were being denied due to requests for additional evidence. The H-1B’s have long before been a political target and many technology companies as well as corporations have said that with a large number of IT operations it is necessary to fill the positions or h1b visa sponsorship jobs which are not full because they could not get it filled by domestic workers especially with those who have high-end computer skills or to recruit those who are particularly promising talent with extraordinary skills.

The recent shifts are said to be a reasonable effort to faithfully apply the law as it is reported that the previous administration was being too lenient in the reviewing of visa requests thus allowing the companies to file a number of application that did not make a strong case too to work in the US. Throughout the first 8 months of 2017, the immigration agency has issued more than 85,000 requests for evidence or RFE’s to the applicants of the US H-1B visas which is in the highest numbers since the year 2009 with a 50% increase over the comparable period in 2016. People are just going at every part of the program and there are academic institutions as well as companies still seeking to bring in H-1B workers and it is just that the speed at which all this is happening is a little breathtaking.

In my previous blog, I have mentioned how Indian firms have seen a massive drop in the number of applications for FY 2016 and how top Indian outsourcing firms in the US are now getting fewer approvals of the US H-1B visa when you compare 2015. An analysis will be presented below for all the companies and who are on the roll.

An analysis by Glassdoor has shown that 9 out of 10 highest paying majors are for US students who are in STEM fields who are out of college by 5 years. There were reports too who said that the figures portrayed in Trump administration are about 80 percent of the H-1B workers were being paid less that the median wage that was paid to other fields.

This statistic is so misleading because the DOL database has multiple applications for the same individual because a new filing will be required generally when the H-1B professional moves ahead to a new job or an area. Who received less H-1B visas in 2016! -Part 1

There are many Indian firms who have seen a drop in the approved number of petitions in the year 2016 that is a 37% of approved petitions as compared to the last year according to reports. Many top Indian outsourcing firms in the US have received fewer approvals of US H-1B visa as compared to 2015 and the new H-1B petitions for the top firms that have come for approval are only a mere 0.006% of the US labor force.

IT is said that there are threats of job losses as exaggerated by critics and it will be reaching illogical proportions soon as there are discussions of 10 to 10,000 workers in an economy that employs multi-million workers nationwide. The h1b visa database is seeing more number of applications but fewer visas are being doled out.

The number of approved new H-1B petitions for TCS has declined to 50% from the year 2015 to 2016 from 4K to 2K drop. For Wipro, the petitions have declined by a further 50 % from the same years from 3K to 1K for initial employment. For Infosys saw a decline by 16% overall with 2376 approved petitions for initial employment in 2016 to 2820 in 2015 said the report which was based on the research carried based on the research from government data.

The drop in new visas for Indian companies are expected to continue as the data was released on cases filed in the year 2017 to 2018 is majorly because of industry trends that are moving towards digital serviced such as cloud computing and AI which required fewer number of workers and by choice many companies will tend to rely less on h1b sponsorship and will instead try in building up their domestic workforces in the US.

One interesting point to note here is when employers filed for new petitions for FY 2016 there was a drop in the visa use and this was not due to the new elections but because of newer policies of tech firms. Uber had 121, eBay 115, Mayo clinic at 111.

The unemployment rate in the US for mathematical and computer science occupations are at 2.5% that is a very low rate which is lower that most of the other occupations for other sectors and this illustrates that there is a disconnect between the actual reality and claims which say that foreign workers are preventing US workers are taking away their jobs in tech fields. There will be 1.4 million more software development jobs that the applicants must fill by 2020 and there are 500K open computing jobs worldwide.

But this bill was shot down and not approved.

7)    If the wage is increased from minimum to $130k then the hit for IT firm margins will be substantial and more.

8)    Most of the candidates according to the h1b visa database are being paid a range of $65,000-$75,000 according to the skill sets and location by the Indian companies.

9)    Indian IT firms have already begun local hiring in the US in anticipation of tighter visa reforms and the margins are more likely to be hit.

10)    Many Indian firms have cut their EBIT margin guidance for the current year by huge margins.

Making America “wait” again

The new president when on campaign roll last year promised that he will make the tech companies hire the Americans first and the deadline for action was set as 2017. But now it has been 4 months into 2017 and it has not passed out yet. With the new set of applications that will be opened tomorrow for H-1B visa, there have only been speculations with no results. All fellow Americans were hoping that some kind of reform will be there in the US senate but with no hopes as the applications for the h1b visa jobs will be accepted like every time. What was not expected is that one of the key campaign promises that the president made was to reform the visa of the skilled workers and accept more Americans for jobs.

Coming to the H-1B visa it was given to people who are holding a bachelor or a higher degree in the specialty field and a US employer must be willing to take on them allowing them to work in the US up to 6 years. Rules of OPT-an exception to “no Working” in F-1

OPT or optional practical training is taken by the students in the US to get the jobs in the required fields after they finish graduation. Now according to F-1 visa an international student is not allowed to work but here an exception was provided namely the OPT which was a blessing in disguise. Since OPT was to be related to the area of study it was unlike CPT which is curriculum practical training. OPT is to be used only for applying for jobs on an EAD (employment authorization card) which was given by United States Citizenship and Immigration Services for OPT purposes. You must have the card in the hand before starting to work.

Optional Practical Training

Now we will discuss about Opt which is of two types. Pre Completion OPT and Post Completion OPT. Now this pre completion OPT could be used during the vacation or even during school. However when you are doing it in school year it cannot be for more than twenty hours. The other one was post-completion OPT. This one could be done only when you have finished your course requirements that are prescribed in your study with the exception of the thesis or the dissertation which you can submit once you complete the project successfully. Regardless of both the types of OPT you have a total of twelve months of OPT that you must use or complete. But thanks to the new rules you can now apply for 17 more months of extension which is 29 months now as a total period. However you must not be unemployed for more than 90 days at a stretch during your initial OPT period.

What is this STEM? It is degrees related to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Now the government has passed new rules that allow the individuals who have a degree in STEM can now seek OPT extensions and continue working. This is however allowed only when the employer has signed up for the E-Verify program which is a joint program by Social Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security which allows the employers to verify the eligibility of all the foreign nationals and the new hires. While this E-Verify program is optional and not compulsory for most of the employers, it’s required as the candidate can apply for an extension of OPT. Now you can apply for an additional 17 months to the existing 12 months for additional OPT.
