How many times have you not come across this God damn statement - Will let you know? this could be from anyone. Candidates after attending an interview, Businesses after a demo of their product (or a service), Students after a test from a teacher, a patient after a medical test, the list is long.

I have heard this statement for donkey’s years and more from human resources(hr) and business prospects. Not that I never heard it from my close friends or club members, hr and business are only because that I spent more time at work and was eager to get a (Yes) answer from these guys for a better tomorrow.

The younger you are the more you hear this God damn sentence. As the clock ticks within you the trust, enthusiasm, and even respect on the prospect wanes. The orgs that need the right candidate, product, or service stand to lose the good ones.

There are times when you attend those cursed job interviews and you want to know whats your fate in the next moments and this is the time you hear that unpleasant phrase- Will let you know...

After being in the thick of the corporate world for long I now understand there always exist two groups within most management systems - the decision influencers and decision-makers. Between these two groups, there exists an invisible large wall.

Be it the HR Managers you interacted with for a position or the Finance manager you demoed your ERP Fin module who said “...will let you know “ are all stooges of senior management. Who often posture as the decision-makers.

Frankly, they simply enjoy a few moments of that “kick” posing as power centers even though they are not one. Prospects should be aware of this and focus on their best performance so that these stooges will be impressed and influence the decision making - often in your favor.

So what's the best way to deal with this system? it’s about time that businesses become a little more bold and transparent. This calls for pre informing the prospects with details under what need levels they are being called.  It could be exploratory, for a possible future need or current requirement which is to address immediately, who is the decision-maker(s), and finally what factors draw up to making a final decision also an expectable time frame to hear their decisions..

Well, there is a much smarter and novel way throw in your ideas too.  But will they do it? They better!

Hey Martin ! Going to Mars? Wait ...

Hey Martin ! going to Mars wait a minute - hear me out before starting your long journey. 

Firstly, it's not the same as earth and don’t try and make it one. Everything is different there - Occupation (which we call job here ), education, travel, business, social life meaning of life and its purpose. The host of other things largely is different for Martians compared to that of an Earthling.

 Now, let's look at some of these facts that juxtapose your earthly life on Mars So let's hear what it is like to live Mars - 

Education and Jobs 

Schools don’t act as a barrier for education/learning and no one else takes the authority to decide what you learn or decide your eligibility to learn what you like This means - no learning barrier imposed by teachers or institutions. People get educated not to buy material things but, for what it gets them to experience life and its fulfillment. Education teaches you to live life from within and not look for it outside you.

Schools don’t test your knowledge before you learn neither is there anyone to reject your knowledge after your learning. Teachers don’t subject you test and evaluation they motivate and help you get the knowledge you are seeking till you get it. Teachers mentor and prepare you for the knowledge and experience that is needed to be valuable in life. All those lessons learned - you will apply as you go.

Occupations - better known as careers here - is a result of what you know, what you can pursue, what you give for others. Occupations are not designed for accumulating material and pride. Those are considered as a natural result of your productive time. Work gets measured in your effectiveness (not success) in bringing fulfillment upon yourself and to whom it was meant.

Your work - which is termed “Job” here - is all about creating good for others. Be it fixing others health, building houses to live, roads to walk, cooking food for the needy, ferrying people across, teaching people ways to realize their potential, creating art forms, singing, and dancing, that brings vibrancy and harmony among people and finally everything that builds strength that does good to the society and other living beings.

Your work life is measured in your contributions for all these that’s why there is nothing like TAX!

People and Entertainment 

In mars, it is no compulsion that everyone has to agree with. Earthlings are made up of egos and make decisions to satisfy that, Martians are made of conscience and they decide to suit it.

Martians are closely knit society two to three generations live under the same roof. Nothing like the bigger the house bigger the status of the person. Large houses symbolize more people living in harmony. They believe in interdependence and not total independence. I am told about an interesting common gesture among Martians is that when you disagree with someone you smile and move on if you agree with then it’s a long warm hug! 

 There is nothing like getting bored on Mars. Entertainments are not available in malls, theaters, and on any screens. Its all about spending time with self others around you and exchanging soulful talks apart from singing and dancing to your divine pitch within you, this emanates harmony all around. The other popular entertainment for martian society is learning and exploring new knowledge areas. 

Also, people are welcome in homes at any time and they are never a moment a visitor is an intruder, Guests always a part of every home This means a popular entertainment among Martians.

The society there is very hospitable and no one is a stranger to anyone. More interestingly, animals or any living creature don’t form a part of their food!

Business and Travel 

For Martians, the definitions of business do not stand on selling a comb to a bald man or selling a refrigerator to an Eskimo... These are the opening lines of the first day B school sessions here. It all about locating the needs of the people of the living creatures and reaching out to them. bringing satisfaction among those who consumed the business. Unlike here, there is no sales trap laid by businesses, and by the way, the common mission across the planet of Mars is -We strive to keep you happy! 

You travel across Mars because you want to just travel. Often you can see vehicles that use the natural energy ferrying people where they want to reach. Martians are not Xenophobic and there are no boundaries or fence says which says “Martians cannot cross” !!!

Success and Failure

Martians don’t understand success or failure just as they don’t know what “money” means. Working is all about your purpose of life - which is mostly to see happiness within you and help others who are struggling to do the same - is and not because what others want you to “become”.The term “loser” is and possibly never found in their dictionary. You are only born to Win!

Just remember this - When an earthling calls Mars Utopia don’t see a blank there. Its the other name for Mars. For earthlings here, Utopia means an imaginary nonexistent place. They still don't understand that’s a real place and it exists. That’s another story for another day. Knowing all this, if you still want to make it to Mars - Great!

Long Live the Women!

Every Year this date passes off to me as another day . This one would have been no different, had Nimi,  my sixteen year old daughter hadn’t  asked me what gift should we give Amma on women’s day ?

I confront her what does it mean and why the special day for women? Nimi goes on to explain that this is the day that International Women's Day (IWD) is dedicated to recognize  women's achievements in various fields and also points out to the gender equality and so on... Well this pushed me for a walk down the memory lane, triggering my thoughts  about the women whom I grew up with , women who were responsible for my learning , those whom I admired for their wisdom at work and life. thought this was a good  time to pause and say “Thank you !”

Growing up with five sisters and being the youngest of them made a different upbringing experience. After losing both my parents by 18, I was like someone who lost his rudders while rowing a boat and was experiencing a  difficult journey in the sea of life. Most of the sisters qualified to be my mother by age and their experience,  took me on their wings and groomed me all through and their That little one  feelings towards me remains unchanged even now  ! Everything of mine –education, marriage, home and more is a result of the five mothers.

I grew up watching these five women at home who were dedicated to education – a core common activity – followed by painting ,Indian classical music and oratory (one of them extended this strength to a lawyer’s profession) and above all practiced common family values This was good enough modelling for me to take it forward with me, which am carrying forward today.

Also carrying forward today is the efforts of my many teacher Ms Celine at school  who taught me maths when 2+2 was 5 for me .She used to take me to her teacher’s hostel in the evenings and never let me go home unless I finished the homework and recite 1-20 tables. When I impressed her enough I would return home with a Cadbury’s in my hand! Ms Jayashree was another teacher whose charms and knowledge of physics combined with her teaching ability triggered my physics interest (of course I didn’t become a physicist !) speaking of teachers the list is endless will bring it up on other day. Now my heart felt gratitude to all of those teachers who kindled my love love learning  .

There are many women from different walks of life, I have hardly spoken out in open but admit that I have been quietly admiring them –Helen keller, Mary Curie , Jhansi laxmi Bai , Kittor Chennama, Sania Nehwal, PV SIndhu , , Indira Nooyi and again the list goes on.All these women have inspired me at a time I was looking up to an external stimulus to walk chin up on several of my grim moments. I did walk chin up as i read their stories or watched them on screen Thank you ladies ! 

Back home ,my wife has been walking along with me holding my hands – to this date  I thought  she is holding my hands because she needed my support – now looking back I realize that she has been constantly leading and holding me from falling off the edges of life A big thanks to this women and her  thankless role  !

My daughter Nimi though sixteen, is my young critique and is always the little one for me. Often she critiques and  corrects me – I know it should have been the other way round – whether it’s my ancient English pronunciation , today’s etiquette , my dressing sense or my tech using abilities.In all these I see a teacher and my mother’s qualities and that fails to provoke my anger .In fact I learn from her criticisms. Thank you little one !

Above all - most importantly - my mother who  silently bore all the pains I gave her as an infant and all the tantrums I threw at her as a teen. She inscribed values in me that – perhaps only I can understand its importance – has kept me going no matter where or what am (doing) in life. Thanks is too small an expression for her !

Well wrapping up my thanks giving for this season by placing two facts – One, this  world needs talents and strengths to survive and it draws from anyone ,no matter which gender has it  and the second this world cannot exist without women .So, Long Live the Women !

abcd...LGBTQ...wxyz

It all began with a weekend chat with my millennial neighbor over a  cup of tea,He was there to talk to me on some career options that this brilliant young man can pursue. I work as a management consultant and that drew him to discuss. 

The evening discussion started as per his agenda and he seemed to be lit with bright ideas.The 90 minute discussion ended with Ahh! moment after he concluded that he would  pursue a masters in int business and take his career in that direction. Sharing his excitement ,  I said we should have a cup of tea . He said he rarely takes tea or any caffeine but agreed as a stroke of gratitude.

As i went in to make tea and came back with two cups , he was browsing an old mag kept on the table .I wasn't even aware of the presence of this mag and what pulled him towards the mag was an article on LGBT rights !

As he stretched his hand to receive the tea cup he hesitatingly asked my opinion on lgbt.. For a few seconds i struggled to give him my opinion .Not that i had one and was hiding it ,but the opinion was in a cloud and the expression was hard to come. But he is a very bright guy and wouldn’t leave me or the place without getting an opinion ,I knew that am dealing with a millennial and should share my opinion in way it not only conveys it right but also pleases him.I began with my eyes down (rarely this happens) Ummm...Ummm...well its been there since a longtime nothing new about it ...” he wouldn’t take a beating around the bush answer and preferred to ask the precipice question “Sri what is your opinion on same sex marriage ?” 

The question of course was unambiguous but i wished to clarify him in a same tone - as simple as yes/no .I said change is an integral part of the nature and whether we accept or not it does sweep and this is one of them.

He seemed to be bent upon to get my non political or a diplomatic answer.He decided to be somewhat straight  rephrased the question “Sri do you accept if same sex couple comes to you and asks  your house for a rent ?” the answer to this question should have ended it very nicely if it was answered the millennial way - yes ! But deep inside me there was a clog which never let this simple Yes to come out and said” well it depends..”

The millennial who had concluded his career discussion with me quite jubilantly did not find my answer to his current puzzle  the same way.His head dropped and eyes looking down he proceeds to give me the gyan on human and social life.

He started by saying “well am not a gay ,certainly not but we should accept those who chose to live that way and after all whats wrong ...”.

At this point I nod in agreement with him and he somewhere seems jubilant that he has opened my eyes and brightens up again and asks if he could take leave .I say yes and after seeing him off the gate i sink into my own thoughts on this predicament -where was i wrong 

Upon pondering all over it - on a topic that i spared not even few significant minutes till I met the millennial boy  - some thoughts crossed over me -

Well changes happen not always because i have an opinion on that .Its a predetermined nature’s principle .The human community socially,politically and even sexually undergo evolution  however opinions matter less and people should and will have their opinion no matter what the subject is -if not neutral may be for or against it- Opinion is their’s let them enjoy. 

The beliefs and  opinions depend around the generations we belong .Baby boomers may have an opinion on LGBT community different from a  Gen X and sharply different from a millennial so be it .Variety is spice of life after all ! 

Iam a Gen X and i carry whats written in my blank mind during my formative years so i carry exactly that as a foundation course for life views .Of course not to impose it on others.

May be some day i get an invite to attend a wedding on a same date that of Sam and Bob , Linda and Betty  and also Sam and Linda obviously my heart guides me to attend the later’s wedding what’s wrong with that ? -  right ? Am a Gen X after all ! Any way I wish all the married couples to have a pleasant married life

In the coming years and centuries there are many more communities (covering all the English alphabets) that come in - in what we may consider queer or completely unacceptable  community and it’s practices today will demand more rationale approach,sympathies  and acceptance.  No matter what the Baby boomers ,  the Gen X  or Millennial opines these communities would come to life  and thrive and life moves on and that’s life of coexistence on earth .

Well  like to believe that its alright to have your opinion on the subject and   leave (them alone ) and lets live too.Ah! am free now and ready for another chat over a tea!

Why I liked India election’19

Its been about week that the elections in India came to a close after a very heated and dusty election festival - festival because that’s the way it was experienced by many here.I must say as a voter i have experienced several elections .Frankly during previous  elections, i let my experience pass by without much of a fervor .But election’19 came with a special flavor -it was more a chemistry, less of  math .

About 67% of  900 million Adrenalin spiked and  emotion charged voters exercised  their franchise and eagerly waited for the results to be announced . In private most voters ,politicians and political pundits had declared the results within themselves much ahead of counting and even the polls! - this turned to be true  with an exception of few astrologers of course  !   

Finally the India  elections -19 is all over now ,counting is all done  amid some creepy noise on VVPATs which failed to gather any momentum and yesterday with the pompous swearing in at Rashtrapathi bhavan ,the business of all ministries have already begun. 

Looking back on what was so special about this election ,there were several factors :

The BJP government in the previous term had connected with people emotionally and in someway it certainly established an identity of an common Indian .As some elderly gentlemen put it “ I now feel am an Indian and proud of it...” another school teacher said ”with the  present government in place I feel the British have now left India ...” Such emotions consistently echoed across the country.

The neo liberals failed to convince that a society can be completely  neutral with no religious or national identity and the least they could expect of  this society of ours with a five thousand year old history can leave its culture behind stay absolutely contemporary with nothing to do with our roots !  

Although the western pundits and left brainers were questioning the quantifiable  progress made by the BJP government in the last five years , in  terms of GDP  ,employment for youth ,domestic policy and  schemes implementation etc.All these seemed irrelevant for the most part of the populations .Although these are indeed popular factors that decide the fate of governments and state, here we just seem to over run it all for want of common social and emotional identity. This goes as a lesson for sociologists and rest of us on the importance of “national and emotional identity and the also the significance of the connect with state leadership”.

Many intellectuals,specially those media active individuals,  of the country who were pointing out to  social issues and profiling the governing party as an ‘intolerant’ - a new term for “communal” - did realize that those who they termed as” victims “ of intolerance  too voted for this very party which made way for about 303 seats out of 543 MPs in the parliament ! 

As the country moved towards the election ‘19 the opposition -  the congress in particular  -  was the happiest when they “caught the PM in rafale scam”  whatever be the fact of the matter of the deal it never saw  its impact on voters. 

So in a nut shell the happy facts this election established to me  was an eyeopener on what a state leadership should be doings as its “firsts” and that people of the country value most - is establishing and protecting the citizen’s identity and culture  and the  rest will follow - So here its the chemistry first.

Secondly ,the importance of a top leader, in this case  the PM, to stay connected with the ordinary class of the country (yes the middle class).We saw and felt this as each time he addressed the audience either in person or thro’ the  media he conveyed to them that he is one among them and so genuine it seemed, it did touch those  hearts of almost every citizen -including mine. 

Well during session one the BJP has conducted very well and demonstrated how well it can handle chemistry and we will look forward for session two that of Math.While term one  is proof of concept of sorts  term  two will be that of prototype stage .This is what the left brainers will be critically looking at all though it could be a smaller population then the right brainers the former forms a critical mass .Well for those looking for a quantifiable accomplishment of session one (can we call chem session?) its BJP= 302/543  and NDA =353/543  (firstpost figures) .

Seeing the present ministerial team - team Modi 2.0 as they call it - and its leadership there is enough reason to believe that the outcomes can be AS good and even better then term one .

Well i liked this election because this  festival of democracy made a commoner  like me get involved and many political ,social and leadership lessons were given !

Brown rice good;white Bad ...

Brown rice good for health ;white rice is bad ....Does this sound  familiar ? if not i assume you are one of those who is preoccupied with an important job and there is hardly anytime to meet up  guests (or hosts) who are on a “high tea building networks”,these are mostly contemporary food specialists whom seem to have hacked the secret code of elixir of perfect human  health , or some of those food bloggies or  whatsapp food authors who think they are serving a mouth watering coverage on benefits of contemporary foods and health benefits by forwarding those messages. 

One of the best ways to start a conversation in a social gathering  is -at least among the urban elite and the upper  middle class  -  either start with the state of weather  - this serves as a welcome drink around  and move and the traffic scene .This could well mean some  starters and if your next  talk happens to be  on  organic foods - You are now on main course ! 

Last week I  was attending a concert in Bengaluru and was a little early so that I get to sit closer to the dais.I managed to get a closer seat to the dais and also got a  chance to be a part of the organic conversation -passively though - when a  small group sitting in the row ahead of me spontaneously started  a discussion on the topic close to my heart - food ! This discussion among the group not only served as a prelude to the concert, it also served as food for thought .Let me recap the highlights of the  conversation among the three people - A lady with a green sari (Lady 1 in her early 40s ),Lady with a blue dress (Lady 2 probably in  mid 30s ) and a genteel in black pant and a white shirt (well over 45 s Gentleman) 

Lady 1 : Opps! its quite humid  in here..There is a change in global climate and its getting warmer by the year ..

Lady 2 : Oh yes !.surprising its Nov and and feels like April !

The gentleman moves into the conversation . Just not the climate even the food we eat has completely changed its all chemical stuff you know and this is making us feel more vulnerable to climate changes 

Lady 1 : ...that’s why i always use organic vegetables and look for more organic stores wherever i shop.even though its expensive.

Lady 2 :Oh ! me too am very particular about the food i cook you see. I always prefer the brown rice then the white one...

Gentleman : I tried the brown rice wasn’t so tasty as white... prefer the white over brown ..

Lady 1: No you better get used to it ..this has more of husk and in  white(rice) it’s all removed.

Gentleman (innocently) : What does the husk do ma’am ?\

Lady 1 : Well...er..er.. will send you the details let me have  your whats app num 

Also hurriedly adds that she is planning to start  an organic food boutique .Did boutique sound weird - for me too  !

Lady 2 : Ma’m  my husband loves tea and he has several cups a day am tired of controlling him ... what’s your advice . 

Lady 1 : Well ...well ...there is an organic tea er... will send you the details let me have your num 

i wonder organic tea ! all my life have been drinking tea and where on earth did i find an inorganic tea ? 

They both shared the number and hopefully the lady roped in her first prospect  besides developing their organic relations 

Sitting in the corner seat  of the back row i was hoping that one of these pundits  would spell the rational behind the brown , white , and other colored rices.This  I never happened. All of a sudden the conversation now slips into whispers ,I see the artists occupying their respective seats on the dais and a bright looking lady is about to start the performers’ introduction. Now its music time for a couple of hours. I too sit back to enjoy the concert 

Post concert - As i drive back home am  wondering about this chaos on different foods people-every under or un employed - turning into a  make believe dietitian. Of course excluding the legitimate dietitians in this context us ignorant consumers ! what makes me wonder who on earth is cooking all these ? the business hungry marketers , women who are thirsty to project know how on contemporary  scientific  cooking or the greedy business men who want to kill the rival brands and establish their own ? 

Let me confess my ignorance :am no botanist or agriculturist or even remotely a life sciences person.I eat to sustain life and occasionally i live to eat while i believe its better to eat to live.My  wife is a life sciences professional  and she most often believes in cloured rice - brown in specific .Hence  its strictly rice is  brown at home .

Let me tell you ever since we switched to brown rice years ago neither have i grown rich in any way or my  girth has reduced in anyway and yet our racial inclination for rice is brown , .by the way it comes with a fat price tag!

My personal preference ? interestingly have closed the doors and windows of whats app, emails and unqualified people who blabber on food technologies.

Walking down the memory lane, that’s in my teens and later  it was my mother’s care and diet plan that kept me slim, trim and healthy.Pictures in my album  serves as the proof of concept and  reminds me of  of the mistake i committed by following many food specialists whose food advises are sending a lot of doctors , hospitals , dietitians,theme stores such as organic malls - laughing to the bank.

Anyway have decided to go home for my lunch.”Mom am home...me hungry,,,where are you ?

An Interesting Argument ...

These days ,it isn’t uncommon to see and hear men and women fight .Be it in print, on mics , on camera, , news, almost every medium around the globe. Bengaluru  - where i live - isn’t behind in the fight for gender equality.

It so happened that last week my vehicle had a problem and  i had to board the bus for my work.I live in a place which is fairly remote part of the city. So decided to take a bus .The 45 min journey was filled with entertainment. Not because they switched on the movie or a clown got into bus, but a lady  possibly in her late 30s sat in one of the seats at the back of the bus.The argument began when a seemingly well educated man possibly in his late 40s got into the bus at some point and requested the lady to make way for him to sit. This is the trigger for the argument.Let me put that in its originality :

Man: Please get up madam.

Lady: Why ?Am sitting here.

Man : I know you are sitting here but you(ladies) can sit in the first few reserved seats for you.These are only few seats which says no reservations for anyone and men i think can sit here.

Lady:Unreserved means anyone can sit and by the way when a lady is sitting its almost ill manners to ask her make way for you.

Amidst these voices  some one behind muttered: well it’s equality madam if a man were to be sitting in those seats which said “Reserved for ladies only” then in all your right and  might you would ask him to get out  and with no choice he would getup and go so why the fuss here?

Lady:enraged ! show me the sign saying “seats for men only” I would get up..

Man: That would never happen. Men are let to hang on to the foot board and even fall off the running bus, but never would he be obliged  to sit in the reserved seats for women. Even faraway is the fact that the authorities will ever keep few seats for men as “Reserved for men.“ This could probably mean a disregard for women? or so the authorities think.

Lady: If that’s the case You don’t have the right to move us out  we have that guaranteed place - told and untold -  anywhere be it transport or buildings.

The bus was nearing its final terminus and no matter which gender had the right  and reservation, they had to get up and go. As we stood up from our seats to leave the wise man gave his last words : “You women argue for justice,fairness and equality but also demand special status which contradicts it all ...” A few men turned to him said “Sir you said it all correct.. “ only to hear the man retort and walkaway “...where were you all when i was talking to the stubborn lady all alone? ” 

As I walked past the bus - after a live talk show , more interesting and  amusing    - even better then one of those radio or TV shows  have heard and watched -  it just occurred to me the mighty lady she was, nothing made her give up her right  no matter how many men she was surrounded sought her seat . 

As I reached my office it hurriedly concluded in me - women by birth are powerful , do we need to engage with  unwarranted gender debate in public on “which  is a more stronger gender ?”

 My bus and other experiences say, power generally lies in the hands of  women; if women are subjected to difficulties, many times its  because they have accommodated the guys out there (with exceptions, of course) should the victim wake up - God save you guys !

As I settled down at my desk in the office, I remember someone quoting from Eleanor Roosevelt : “Nobody can  hurt you without your consent”

Deepavali - a glorious festival of lights ...

Many stories go around  Deepavali festival.This festival usually is celebrated in the month of November.Several communities -Hindus , jains and lots of them celebrate .Even non hindus are seen actively celebrating Deepavali this could be because of the ,their hindu friends or and may be for family reasons  (one of the parent /relatives a Hindu  or simply for the joy of bursting crackers and lighting.

As for the stories go - this 3 day or in some regions  5 day festival is the day that is celebrated to mark the return of Lord Rama from his 14 year  exile,it is also celebrated as the day of destruction of the Asura King Narakasura,who was tormenting his subjects and finally he was killed by Lord Krishna on this day.

Well to me Deepavali is a day of family reunion exchange of sweets.We do take oil bath on the first day that is Naraka chaturdashi and burn crackers early morning and later in the evening am no adult when i start lighting lamps and burning crackers that evening.We have next day Amavasya some of north indian friends celebrate this as a Lakshmi puja day and we are invited there. We get to eat the best sweets - like an elephant in a sugarcane field !  forget diabetes on these days! day 3 is Balipadyami and the evening is reserved for crackers and lights .We will burn all of those that were remaining . Its this day  family and friends get together and even strangers add on to the group celebration.These 3 days ignite our spirit for the next 12 months!
