Quebecois Word of the Day #5
Toune
Although itâs derived from the English word âtuneâ, a toune refers to songs rather than musical melodies. Itâs the equivalent of the standard French chanson.
E.g.: As-tu entendu la nouvelle toune qui joue Ă la radio? Câest qui qui la chante? â Have you heard the new song playing on the radio? Who sings it?
15 French Slang Words Every French Learner Should Know đ»
1. Bordel
Bordel literally means brothel. However, these days bordel is more commonly used to describe a large mess. An example would be: Range ta chambre. Câest le bordel. Clean your room. Itâs a mess.
2. Balle
Balle as a singular, literally means bullet. Yet back in the day, balles was used as a slang word for francs, the French currency pre-2002. And when France moved on to the euro, balles moved with it and it is still sometimes used in reference to money. An example would be: Jâaime ton pantalon. Merci. Je lâai achetĂ© au marchĂ© pour quinze balles. I like your pants. Thanks. I bought them at the market for 15 euros.
3. Baraque
The word baraque literally means shanty, or small house made of planks. However, recently the term has been adapted to refer to a house, or, as an adjective, baraqué,  someone who is really muscular.  For example: On habite dans une grosse baraque avec 10 colocs. We live in a large house with 10 other people. En rÚgle générale, les joueurs de rugby sont plus baraqués que les joueurs de foot. Generally speaking, rugby players are more muscular than football players.
4. BG
These days BG is a popular acronym. It stands for beau gosse, which means hot guy. Gosse on itâs own though is slang for a child though so watch out! If youâre in Quebec, gosse is feminine and carries an entirely different connotation as a slang word for a part of the male anatomy that is generally used in the plural⊠So if youâre planning to use your slang in Canada, be aware of that difference, since there could be a few misunderstandings!
5 . BCBG
Another popular acronym, which is the French slang for preppy, is BCBG (bien chic bon genre).
6. Blé
Blé literally translates as wheat in English. However, figuratively it has become a popular way of referring to money. (Another common way of referring to money in slang terms is fric or pognon). Here is an example: Il gagne beaucoup de blé. He earns a lot of money.
7. Bobo
Bobo is actually baby talk for une blessure (an injury). However, you will find that young people commonly use this term when referring to minor injuries such as cuts and bruises. An example might be: Quâest-ce quâil y a? Jâai un bobo sur le pied. Whatâs the matter? I have a scratch on my foot.
8. Bouffer
Bouffer literally means to puff up or balloon in size. However, it has become common practice to replace the word manger (to eat) with bouffer in everyday speech. And in turn, la bouffe is then used as another word for food. Here is an example: Jâai trop mangĂ©. Jâai bouffĂ© un steak tartare avec des frites suivi dâune grosse tarte aux pommes. I ate too much. I ate a steak tartare with fries followed by a big slice of apple tart. Je suis allĂ© en ville pour acheter de la bouffe. I went into town to buy some food.
9. Une clope
A commonly used slang word, especially in Paris, is the argot for cigarette; une clope. For example: Tâaurais pas une clope? You donât happen to have a cig, do you?
10. Kiffer
Another term used by todayâs generation, which you may not already know is the word  kiffer, which is slang for to like something (it works best with a hobby!). However, pay attention, if you kiffe quelquâun, it implies that you desire that person. Hereâs an example: Je kiffe faire de la voile. I really enjoy sailing. Je kiffe ton frĂšre. I like your brother. (Iâm romantically interested in him).
11. Mec
The word mec is yet another commonly used slang term, and refers to boyfriends as well as guys in general. For example: Il est beau, ce mec. That guy is good-looking. Tu viens avec ton mec? Are you bringing your boyfriend?Â
Another type of slang that you might come across is verlan, which are French words spelled backwards, and often incorrectly, in slang. And while this concept might seem a bit intimidating at first, you will find that you pick it up in no time at all and probably without even realizing.
12. Meuf
Our first example is meuf, which was originally femme. And, as with the word femme, this term can be used to refer to a female, or your girlfriend, although it can have pejorative connotations.
13. Relou
Our second example is relou, the verlan for lourd (heavy or taxing) and equivalent of chiant, which means annoying/exasperating. Hereâs an example: Câest trop relou! That sucks!
14. Ouf
Ouf is literally the French translation of the interjection phew as well as meaning crazy/awesome in verlan, being the backwards of fou (crazy/awesome). On a fait un truc (de) ouf hier. *Here âoufâ can work as either an adjective, without the âdeâ, or as a noun, with the âdâ. Itâs up to you! We did something crazy awesome yesterday.
15. ĂȘtre vĂ©nĂšre
And finally, our last slang word for today is another way of expressing that you are annoyed or angry; ĂȘtre vĂ©nĂšre, which is the verlan of ĂȘtre Ă©nervĂ©. An example would be quite simple: Mathieu est vĂ©nĂšre. Matthew is annoyed. (It is important here to pay attention to your accents because vĂ©nĂ©rĂ© means to be revered).

gerade
Gerade is a word with many meanings and I think itâs one of the most frequently used words in German, so I decided to make this overview :)
Note: E can often be dropped in spoken language. So the adverb can be pronounced âgeradeâ, âgradeâ or just âgradâ. For the adjective, however, there are only two possible pronunciations: gerade and grade. If you want to sound formal, pronounce it âgeradeâ
as an adverb
right now: â Ich bin gerade in meinem Zimmer. - Iâm in my room right now. â Was machst du gerade? - What are you doing? â Ich lerne gerade. - Iâm studying. As you can see in the 2nd and 3rd example, âgeradeâ is used to express the progressive aspect. Note that unlike in English, the progressive aspect is not needed in German
just, a short while ago: â Das habe ich gerade gesagt. - I just said that. â Sie hat gerade etwas gegessen. - She just ate something. â Ich bin gerade von der Schule nach Hause gekommen - I just got home from school. If you want to add emphasis you can say âgerade ebenâ, âgerade erstâ and âgerade eben erstâ
exactly, (emphasis) When speaking, the word after gerade is stressed! â Gerade das mĂŒssen wir verhindern. - This is exactly what we need to avoid. â Das ist gerade das, was wir brauchen. - This is exactly what we need. â Gerade deshalb mĂŒssen wir es tun. - That is (precisely) why we need to do it.
as an adjective
straight â Zeichne eine gerade Linie. - Draw a straight line. even â 8 ist eine gerade Zahl. - 8 is an even number.
firstly, what are honorifics? honorifics play an extremely important role in korean - depending on who youâre talking to, sentences are conjugated differently. this is dependent on age and closeness of the person you are talking to. when youâre talking to anyone that is younger than you/close to you, you can talk to them informally, therefore all sentences will be conjugated informally. when talking to people that are older than you (and therefore deserves respect), you must speak to them formally. therefore, all sentences will be conjugated formally. there are two levels to this, but in this lesson, iâll only be briefly covering informal low respect (for people youâre close to/younger than you) and informal high respect (for people who are older than you/not as close to you). note: despite it being âinformalâ, the informal high respect conjugation can be used widely with most people, including strangers that are older than you!Â
before we dive into conjugation, here are some quick notes! when speaking informally, you will refer to âme/iâ as ë. when speaking formally, you refer to âme/iâ as ì , and ì is added to the end of your sentence to make it more formal. got it? letâs move onto conjugation!
past tense: ììŽ/ììŽ(ì) đ
if the last vowel in a word stem is ă or ă , ì is used to conjugate to the past tense.
if the last vowel in a word stem is anything bută or ă , ì is used to conjugate to the past tense.
say weâre conjugating the word ëščë€ (to eat). the word stem here is ëšč and the last vowel in the word stem is ă , therefore ììŽ(ì) is used to conjugate to the past tense:
> ì ë ëč”ì ëščììŽì (i ate bread) ì is used, therefore sentence must be conjugated formally. as a result, ì is used at the end > ëë ëč”ì ëščììŽ (i ate bread) ë is used, therefore the sentence is informal. as a result, ì is not added to the end of the sentence
say we want to conjugate the word ìë€ (to sleep). the word stem is ì, and the last vowel in the stem is ă . therefore, ìì(ì) is used to conjugate to the past tense!
> ì ë ì€ìŽì (i slept) ì is used, therefore the sentence must be conjugated formally. as a result, ì is added to the end of the sentence > ëë ì€ìŽ (i slept) ë is used, therefore the sentence is informal. as a result, ì is not added to the end of the sentence
present tense: ì/ìŽ(ì) âš
if the last vowel in the word stem is ă or ă , ì(ì) is used to conjugate to the present tense.
if the last vowel in the word stem is anything other than ă or ă , ìŽ(ì) is used to conjugate to the present tense.
imagine we want to conjugate ìœë€ (to read). the last vowel in the word stem, ìœ, is ă Ł. this is not ă or ă , therefore ìŽ(ì) is used to conjugate to the present tense. > ì ë ìœìŽì (i read) again, ì is used, therefore ì is added to the end of the sentence to make it formal.
> ëë ìœìŽ (i read)
hereâs another example featuring the verb êł”ë¶íë€ (to study). the last vowel in the word stem, êł”ë¶í, is ă , therefore ì(ì) is used to conjugate to the present tense. because the last letter in the stem is a vowel, the ì merges with í to form íŽ. (you can read more about this on howtostudykorean.com, lesson 5!)
> ì ë íê”ìŽë„Œ êł”ë¶íŽì (i study korean) > ëë íê”ìŽë„Œ êł”ë¶íŽ (i study korean)
future tense đ
there are two main ways of conjugating to the future tense:
by adding êČ ìŽ(ì) to the end of the word stem
by adding ăč/ì ê±°ì(ì) to the end of the word stem
they both translate to show that you will do/will be something, but the first method has a slightly different nuance from the second usage. this is because it implies a sense of determination. hereâs an example featuring ê°ë€ (to go) ê°ë€ + êČ ìŽ(ì) = ê°êČ ìŽ(ì) > ì ë ì€ê”ì ê°êČ ìŽì (i will go to china)
hereâs another example featuring ë§ëë€ (to meet) ë§ëë€ + êČ ìŽ(ì) = ë§ëêČ ìŽ(ì) > ëë ìì넌 ë§ëêČ ìŽ (i will meet exo)
the second way of conjugating to the future tense, as previously stated, is by adding ăč/ì ê±°ìì to the end of the word stem. unlike the first usage, there is no implication of determination - itâs simply just a way of conjugating to the future tense.
ăč is added when the last letter in a word stem is a vowel
ì is added when the last letter in a word stem is a consonant
hereâs an example featuring ì”ë€ (to eat). the last letter in the word stem is ă±, therefore ì ê±°ìì is used! > ìë ëčëčë°„ì ëščì ê±°ìì (i will eat bibimbap)
hereâs another example featuring êł”ë¶íë€ (to study). the last letter in the word stem is ă , therefore ăč ê±°ìì( is used! > ì ë íê”ìŽë„Œ êł”ë¶í ê±°ìì (i will study korean)

Hindi Lesson Two: âto beâ + proximal/distal and some basic questions
The verb à€čà„à€šà€Ÿ hona to be, conjugates according to singular and plural, as well as having two specific conjugations for the first person, and the intermediate formality of the second person.
à€źà„à€ à€čà„à€ - main hoon à€€à„ / à€Żà€č / à€”à€č à€čà„ - too/yah/vah hai* à€€à„à€ź à€čà„ - tum ho à€à€Ș / à€Żà„ / à€”à„ à€čà„à€ - aap/ye/ve hainÂ
As you can see, the difference between à€čà„ hai (is) and à€čà„à€ hain (are) is nasalization of the vowel.
à€€à„ too is grammatically singular, and therefore it uses à€čà„ hai (is).
(side note: since too is singular, it can only be used to refer to one person at a time. If you want to speak rudely to multiple people at once you will have to use à€€à„à€ź tum in an angry tone of voice. :P)
à€čà„à€ Hoon can be translated as am. à€čà„ Ho is only used with tum and doesnât have a specific English translation.
*remember that colloquially, yah and vah are pronounced âyeâ and âvoâ. Ve can also be pronounced like âvoâ.

Internet slang
As promised, some keyboard slang (we stole a lot from you)(sue us). I wrote what is accurate at the moment, a few years ago it was quite popular to write lik this m8 but it became pretty unhip (I could tell you that you can type âaussiâ (: too, as well) âO6âł but literally no one has done that since 2008) most people write normally and add some of the following words :
Basics :
- jpp (je nâen peux plus) : I canât stand it anymore, Iâm dying from the lols
- osef (on sâen fout) : no one cares
- mdr (mort-e de rire) / ptdr (pété-e de rire) : lol
- cmb / ctb (comme ma bite/comme ta bite) âlike my dick/like your dickâ : easy punchline to almost anything, ex : âthe line was so long!â âcmbâ âyou have a short memoryâ (expr âtu as la mĂ©moire courteâ) âctbâ
- cmt (comment) : how / cmb (combien) : how much/many
- slt (salut) / bjr (bonjour) / bsr (bonsoir) : hello
- bn (bonne nuit) : good night
- bcp (beaucoup) : a lot, much, many / tp (trop) : too, too much
- mtnt (maintenant) : now /Â ajd (aujourdâhui) : today / jms (jamais) : never
- srtt (surtout) : especially, above all / vrmt (vraiment) : really
- jsp (je ne sais pas) : I donât know / ms (mais) but
- pr (pour) : for / pcq / pq (parce que) : because
- pq / pk (pourquoi) : why
- ss (sans) : without OR (sous) : under / sr (sur) : over, on
- tt (tout) : all, everything OR (tant) : so much, as long
- mn (mon) : my (m) / tn (ton) : your (m) / sn (son) : his/her
- ns (nous) : we OR (nos) : ours / vs (vous) : you (pl) OR (vos) yours (pl) / lr (leur(s)) : their / theirs
- fr (faire) : to do, make
- tmtc / vmvs (toi-mĂȘme tu sais / vous-mĂȘme vous savez) : you know what Iâm talking about, in the context of a private joke
- tkt / tqt (ne tâinquiĂšte pas) : donât worry
- c (câest) : it is OR (sais/sait) : know (œ/3p sg) / ct (câĂ©tait) : it was
- d (des) : some, ex : mange des chips / t (tes) : your (pl for one person)
- h (heure) : time/hour, ex : on se voit Ă ql h? (at what time do we meet?)
- keske (quâest-ce que) : what is, ex : quâest-ce câest?
- kesta (quâest-ce que tu as) : whatâs up/wrong with you?
- ke / q (que) : that/what, ex : ke ve tu? (what do you want?)
- ql / kel (quel(s)/quelle(s)) : what/which
- askip (Ă ce quâil paraĂźt) : from what Iâve heard, apparentlyâŠ
- oklm (au calme) : relaxed, calm, ex : petite soirée oklm avec les potes #cool
Borrowing to english or kids :
- go : to leave (jây go)
- dodo (beddy byes) : to sleep, sleeping (je vais dodo)
- miam (aka âyumâ) : to eat (je vais miam)
- lol, the legendary
- chiller : to go somewhere and have some relaxed time, without doing much
- fat : something big and amazing, ex : cette soirée est trop fat!
Dropping the vowels :Â
Itâs hard to explain but since so many words in french contain âouâ, âanâ, âaiâ or âonâ (âŠ), when we need or want to make verbs (or possessive pronouns as we have already seen) smaller, we drop those letters and the other person guesses whatâs missing regarding the context.
A few examples (but you can play with lots of other verbs) :
- vx / vt (veux/veut) : to want, œ/3p sg, ex : tu vx d pom? je ss o magasin (do you want apples? Iâm at the store) OR (voit) : to see, meet, 3p sg
- ss / st (sais/sait) : to know, œ/3p sg OR (suis/suit) : to follow, œ/3p sg OR (suis/sont) : to be 1p sg+3p pl, ex : oĂč st t frĂšres? (where are your brothers?)
- cns (connais) : to know someone, 1p sg
- pvs (pouvons) : to can, be able/allowed to, 1p pl
NB : I have used œ/3p sg or pl several times in that post, if you have doubts it means that those forms are the conjugated forms - reminder : je / tu / il-elle-on (singulier) ; nous / vous / ils-elles (pluriel).
When I took french in school our teacher showed us Internet slang and we cracked up at mdr because it sounded like murder so every time something funny happened someone would just casually say murder and anyone in my french class would bust up laughing.

friendly ass reminder that kit kats are the supreme candy bar and no other candy bar can ever compare and thatâs tea
Yo have you ever had japanese kitkats tho? they come is like six million bomb-ass flavors, like green tea, strawberry, BBQ, Pumpkin, TaroâŠÂ I had the Caramel Pudding ones once and Iâve never really recovered.
fun fact kit kats are very popular with students in japan because âkit katâ sounds like a phrase that means âto do wellâ so itâs a major study for finals snack
Was just talking about this with friends! âkitto katsuâ is basically saying to your friend âGood luck!â so handing them a kit-kat bar is the gift equivalent of the same~
Itâs ăăŁăšć〠meaning literally âsurely winâ.đ«

A great activity for an intro linguistics class to learn more about sign languages, from Ariel Cohen-Goldberg on twitter. ASL-LEX is a fun website to browse around in general, especially the interactive visualization of phonologically related signs.
