Let’s talk about something

There is absolutely no doubt that I love Newsies. I think it’s a wonderful musical with an excellent set design, interesting characters played by actors with astounding vocal talent, and mesmerizing choreography. And I love the fandom for Newsies as well. There’s little to no drama, people are friendly and respectful, and we’re all a little bit in love with Crutchie. And that’s great! Shows like Newsies thrive on communities filled with dedicated individuals such as yourselves. But everything has its flaws, no matter how much we wish they didn’t. And there is a flaw in both the musical and the fandom itself. Over the years, I’ve noticed a trend of fans creating characters or stories based around the idea that girl newsies didn’t, well… exist. There are countless fanworks that rely on the central idea that girls selling newspapers to help support their families were taboo, and often that they would be forced to dress as boys in order to work. The number of asks I get that essentially are just peoples characters asking if they can sell because they’re a girl is astounding. I only answer a few of those because the answer is always the same and honestly? It gets tiring. 

Some people might say I’m overreacting. And maybe I am. Maybe this long winded rant of a post is completely absurd and maybe you should just scroll down and ignore it. But it is completely aggravating to sit by and see fans who supposedly “love the history” of this musical completely ignore the girls who worked tirelessly alongside the newsboys we all know. They weren’t the “female newsboy OCs”, they were children trying to make a living by working long hours for literal pennies. The romanticization of poverty is something that happens quite often. We’ve all fallen victim to it. I know I have as well. But we need to recognize that while we may love the musical, the story behind it is one of desolate child laborers, both boys and girls, who worked in unfair and unsafe conditions for considerably lesser pay than their adult counterparts. 

Do not erase history simply for the sake of giving your character some “edginess”. The newsgirls and other female child laborers of the past did not toil for you to turn them into a fantasy. They were real girls, real children, who worked and were friends with the boys who sold beside them. And I do not mean to ignore the struggle that many women faced in trying to become a respected part of the workforce. If I have come off as rude or attacking, I do apologize, as this is an issue that has bothered me for some time and is very close to my heart. I do not mean to insult anyone who subscribes to the ideas I have spoken of. But I implore you to at least remember that these girls existed. Look into their faces, and remember them.
