Cyno, I picked up that light novel you mentioned at the tavern the other night, King of Invokations. I don't typically partake in... this type of literature but didn't think it would hurt this time. Wouldn't you say the protagonist resembles you?
— Al-Haitham
Hear, hear. It wasn't often that Cyno was approached to discuss his favorite hobby, rather than the General himself overbearingly imposing it onto others. Most especially... this wasn't typical of the Scribe.
Realizing the man hadn't come up to him bearing grievances concerning the House of Daena or any other problem at the Akademiya, the desert-dweller relaxed his focus and gave Al-Haitham an expectant look.
"... You've actually read it?" That was surprising. Even when he'd mentioned his favorite light novel to him, Cyno had expected to be just dismissed. It felt odd to think Al-Haitham had actually remembered the conversation, and even gone as far as to procure a copy for himself.
Odd, but in a strangely good way.
And what was that he'd just said...?
"And you think Abu resembles me. Huh..." The General Mahamatra brought one hand to his chin, looking in thought... and a bit amused. That was flattering, unusually so, even. To a degree that was almost embarrassing to let show. His fingers worked to cover the edge of a smile creeping on his mouth. "Didn't think you'd be the type to think of me while reading... Have you gotten to the third book yet?"
"What? Do you really think so lowly of me, General?"
There was something in al-Haitham's voice that was lighter than his words. It was true that he would never even cross the fiction section by his own bidding.
A strange glint flashed in his eye as he watched Cyno's expression contort, just barely unmasked beneath his gray fringe, "Even the absolutely ridiculous pose he makes on the cover is eerily akin to something you'd do."
He looked away, almost like getting his hands too close to a flame.
"Anyway, that's right. It was an extremely quick read due to its rudimentary nature, so I reread the trilogy a couple of times." He cleared his throat after his admission, his lips pressed into a line, "The third volume was the most...interesting. In more ways than one."
Philosophy: al-Haitham puts great importance in using his philosophies as a system for his actions and moral compass. It is helpful to compare his ideals to existing branches/schools purely to explain his character in neat divisions, meaning that some studies may have UNMENTIONED implications in real life that do not correlate with al-Haitham's character.
❖ . Realist: In comparison to Kaveh, an idealist, Haitham values empirical knowledge and an objective reality.
❖ . Rationalism: "a belief that opinions and actions should be based on reason and knowledge rather than on religious belief or emotional response."
❖ . Egalitarianism: the belief that all humans (and gods, in Haitham's case) have equal value.
❖ . Stoicism: a way of pursuing a fulfilling life by focusing on what you can control (thoughts, actions, reactions) while accepting adversity with self-control and reason.
Ideas of Interests/Values:
❖ . The Pursuit of Knowledge/Knowledge/Epistemology: study of the nature and scope of knowledge. Haitham values all aspects of knowledge regardless of its subject. From how it is recorded, how to continue obtaining more, and eternally unknown knowledge for its value of raising more questions.
❖ . Comfort: Other than rationality, al-Haitham values his comfort and freedom most. According to him, "To live a peaceful and comfortable life, one must meet a few requirements first: Congruous personality and logic, adequate fighting prowess, a slow-paced job, and a cushy house in the vicinity of one's office."
❖ . Fundamental Principles: Haitham has a particular interest in the origins and functions of the world around him. This includes human nature, which Haitham has a strong grasp on.
❖ . Semiotics: Haitham studied semiotics in the Akademiya, “the study of sign processes and meaning-making, and includes disciplines such as linguistics and ancient runes studies” that “focuses on linguistics, but we seldom discuss literature. Instead, we spend a lot of time studying syntax and structure.” This could bleed into al-Haitham’s interest in reading, records, books, and the like, and why he is quick to view written words/letters in their most basic forms, “symbols.”
❖ . Efficiency and Practicality: He doesn't care for aesthetics. That is to say, this extends to him not caring about appearances and valuing content.
❖ . It is worth nothing that al-Haitham will only do what interests him. (Or the absolute minimum requirement, like at his job.)
Personality/Habits:
❖ . Haitham defies social rules and he does whatever he wants through his own perception of the world. Whenever there is something that requires his judgment or is doing harm, he takes care of it.
❖ . Laziness: ...However, Haitham is quite lazy and unambitious.
❖ . Curiosity and Humility: al-Haitham never judges a book by its cover. He believes it to be very important to always ask questions and never fall into prejudice.
❖ . Denotation vs. Connotation: Haitham is very aware of how titles like "Scribe," "the Six Great Schools," and "the Six Great Sages" cause intimidation. He utilizes people's judgment of him as unapproachable and arrogant to maximize his peace.
❖ . It is easily mistaken to say that Haitham does not care about anybody else. However, Haitham values the people he keeps near very much! For example, his squabbling with Kaveh is just another way of showing how he values Kaveh's different viewpoints even though he does not believe them himself.
🌱 Headcanon Territory!
General Information:
❖ . Age: ~26-27 years old, estimation based on the canon timeline.
❖ . Orientation: Queer, on the Aro/Ace spectrum
❖ . Al-Haitham is autistic.
Physical Information:
❖ . Height: 6'3 ft. or 1.91 meters
❖ . Build: This Haitham has broad shoulders and a relatively muscular build for someone who does not work out. Otherwise, he's pretty soft around the edges from living a comfortable life.
Extra:
❖ . He often wears rectangular black or golden-framed reading glasses. His golden ones have chains with charms resembling his Chisel-Light Mirrors.
❖ . This Haitham has a light brown color to his skin. Dark brown beauty marks intermittently speckle all over his skin.
❖ . He has dark circles under his eyes.
Personality Quirks:
❖ . Smug Mischief: While never outright spoken, al-Haitham is known to "trick" people to pursue his own gains and tease/start meaningless arguments. I have right to believe that Haitham purposefully is a little smug piece of shit and gets enjoyment out of it.
❖ . I like to imagine that al-Haitham is the one guy who loves Cyno's jokes but all he does is smirk. (Also, I imagine that he enjoys playing Genius Invokation TCG with him.)
❖ . Father/Uncle-Coded: Especially based on how al-Haitham speaks with Paimon in his letters, this Haitham is very nurturing towards young minds who are interested in education.
❖ . Family: It can be assumed that al-Haitham really loves and appreciates his grandmother for all she provided for him. I also like to imagine that he sees Kaveh, Cyno, Tighnari, Collei, Nahida, the Traveler, Paimon, Kandake, Dehya, and Nilou as a form of family now.
❖ . Can See Aranara: Based on a web event and al-Haitham's open-minded curiosity.
Interests Inspired by Ibn al-Haytham:
Ibn al-Haytham was "the father of modern optics," which "usually describes the behaviour of visible, ultraviolet, and infrared light." His studies were significant towards optics and visual perception, which was studied through experimentation with lenses, mirrors, refraction, and reflection. He also contributed to the modern scientific method, particularly "the importance of experimentation and the use of control groups."
While never explicitly stated, I would like to believe that al-Haitham has a particular interest in these topics that Ibn al-Haytham studied, like physics, visual perception, and the scientific method.
This is reflected (lol) in his ability to manifest "Chisel-Light Mirrors" and the House of Daena-inspired windows on his boots,
...the various eye motifs in his design (which possibly also links to the Eye of Horus and King Deshret but I digress), and how he values discovering the truth relates to Ibn al-Haytham's emphasis of experimentation and control groups.
This is all subject to updates... Thank you for checking out my yaps :)
