a new song today! did you see? I was wondering about the context of its release, because the artwork reminded me of a film poster, but I struggled to find information online
I just listened to it tonight and yeah, it's another themesong :)
Background info I pulled from various news sources:
It's a themesong for a new TV drama called "The Protagonist”, produced by Zhang Yimou and premieres on May 10th on CCTV-1 and Tencent. This is Faye and Zhang Yimou's second collaboration after the film "Hero" 24 years ago.
The drama is based on author Chen Yan's literary award winning novel about the rise and fall of a Qinqiang opera star. The song incorporates elements of traditional Chinese opera and sampled a classic Shaanxi folk song. And Faye incorporated operatic singing and Shaanxi dialect into the song.
[TRANSLATION] Faye Wong was spotted attending a play in Beijing. Her relaxed and powerful 5-word response earned praise – truly the demeanor of a heavenly queen
56-year-old pop diva Faye Wong has been living a semi-retired life in recent years, rarely making public appearances. On May 1st, while attending the play "Faust" starring Yin Fang at the Beijing Arts Center, she was photographed by fans. Her friends tried to stop them, but Faye Wong herself said, "Why bother with her?" This instantly sparked heated discussion online and quickly became a trending topic.
Fans recap the scene
The fan and entertainment blogger "Yueyue Meng," who filmed Faye Wong at the theater that day, shared the footage on social media. The video shows Faye Wong wearing a mask and no makeup. She was dressed casually in an athletic jacket, her hair loosely tied in a bun, in a low-key appearance at the theater. After the performance, she was led away by staff.
The blogger spotted her idol and waited at the exit, immediately taking out her phone to film her. Faye Wong's staff, seeing this, became quite nervous and asked, "Shouldn't you do something about that person?" Unexpectedly, Faye Wong, far from being displeased, calmly waved her hand and said, "Who cares? It's nothing, why bother with her?" She then added, "Don't worry about it, don't worry about it," her tone was relaxed and natural, instantly shifting the atmosphere from tense to relaxed, even eliciting laughter.
Faye Wong appeared slightly taken aback when she saw the camera.
The fan recounted the incident in a post. She wrote, "Faye Wong's original voice is here! She told her staff: 'Don't worry about it!' I felt like I was dreaming when I bumped into Faye Wong! Of course I had to take out my phone to record!"
Regarding some netizens' questions about whether Faye Wong seemed to be signaling "Don't take pictures" with her eyes, the fan explained carefully: "What really happened was that Faye Wong was slightly taken aback when she saw me suddenly taking pictures with my phone, but when her staff was worried that I would disturb her, she told them, 'Don't worry about it.' I myself laughed when I saw this." She also stated, "If she [Faye] hadn't allowed photos to be taken today, you wouldn't have seen these candid photos." The post also shows Faye Wong playfully making a "V" sign at the camera afterward, showing her approachable and adorable side.
Netizens praise the laid-back vibe that has remained unchanged for 30 years
After the video was released, it quickly became a trending topic within hours, garnering an astonishing number of views in a single day. Netizens left numerous comments praising her:
"Haha, that 'Why bother with her?' tone was so funny, it felt like the staff were the ones being scolded," "I really love the heavenly queen's personality," "This is the real class of the heavenly queen," "A genuine sense of ease - it's never an act."
Some netizens jokingly described her as: "Faye Wong exudes such a laid-back vibe, like a neighbor's older sister just waking up and taking a stroll!" Others marveled at her flawless appearance without makeup, saying, "You can't tell she's 56 at all; she still radiates a youthful glow."

[TRANSLATION] 'In The Mood For Love' celebration was a star-studded gathering (2000)
The celebratory party was hosted by Carina Lau to honor Tony Leung winning the Best Actor Award at Cannes.
Alcohol Tolerance Report
Gathered together in this room, the constellation of superstars didn't compete over who had won the most awards, but rather put their drinking prowess to the test. As it turned out, Brigitte Lin was content to merely take a polite sip, while Gong Li was discovered to possess a truly bottomless capacity for alcohol.
At the time, Tony Leung was abstaining from alcohol, so at the party, his girlfriend Carina Lau took on the responsibility of drinking on his behalf. Carina Lau was generally known to have a high tolerance for alcohol. However, upon encountering Gong Li, she realized the true meaning of the saying: "No matter how good you are, there is always someone out there that is better."
Gong Li drank with the uninhibited spirit typical of people from Northern China—when she says "bottoms up", she means it. Moreover, she could seamlessly switch between red wine and champagne, mixing drinks without ever getting tipsy. The savvy Carina Lau wisely kept her distance from Gong Li to avoid being the first to get completely wasted.
Faye Wong’s alcohol tolerance may be merely average, but she's incredibly bold. One should not provoke her lightly. Otherwise, she'll drink with the ferocity of a lioness—befitting her astrological sign, Leo. She will unleash her full power, making her a formidable opponent that few can withstand.
Brigitte Lin had a daughter who disliked the smell of alcohol on her mother. Therefore, no one ever pressured her to drink.
