Comicvine podcast: Judd Winick talks Jason Todd

Recently Comicvine hosted Judd Winick on their podcast. You can listen to it here. Sara Lima (SL), Tony Guerrero (TG) and Corey the intern (C) interviewed Winick (JW). He also talked about his upcoming ongoings, Catwoman and Batwing. They took questions from readers and had some of their own. And they talked a LOT of Jason!

SL: How do you perceive Jason Todd’s relationships with each of the Batkids, from his perspective?

JW: Jason. Jason and his relationships. Starting at the bottom, the most recent, I think Jason kind of likes him (Damian).

TG: After he tried shooting him…

JW: Whatever. Jason is psychotic and a scoundrel and changes as the wind does. He’s a bit nuts, but I think what he likes about Damian is that he fights back, he’s an egotistical aristocrat, a 10-year-old man-child and I can’t imagine Jason doesn’t respect the talking back aspect of him, that he’s a little tough guy.

He hates Tim Drake more than any of them because Tim came after him. I never got to tell the Tim Drake-Jason Todd story and I probably won’t in this fashion. Or we’ll see. We’ll see. In my view, he hates Tim without even knowing him, without knowing anything about him or ever fighting him or being alongside him, he hates just the idea of him. He’s the one who came after him.

Dick, he also hates, but for entirely different reasons. That’s sort of like he’s (Dick) the good son. I think Jason feels superiority to Dick Grayson. It’s behind that Dick’s the goody-two-shoes. That’s an understatement of how he feels. He also understands that Dick Grayson’s never going to be Batman. That’s where the condescension comes in. You’re never going to be Batman, you don’t have that thing, that flaw in your character that makes Batman Batman. He’s like, I know I have that. He thinks he can do better than Batman. I think he looks down at Dick.

TG: I just want to go on record and say I don’t like the red hair/dying his hair thing. I remember Jason Todd stealing the Batmobile’s hubcaps or tires, he had black hair, he wasn’t dying his hair and the whole thing with Batman dying his hair — I don’t like it.

JW: Grant was doing this thing where he wanted to make all the continuity work and that was one of the facets of it. Come September, black hair again. So, don’t worry. I’ve gone out there, it’s black hair again. There’s a spoiler.

Cass Cain? Battle-wise yes, Strategy, Detective skill, Experience = no. Relationship with other crimefighter = no. Dick Grayson is the obvious choice. It takes something more than cracking skull ability to become the bat. I know you love Cass, but she have nothing but her martial arts ability.

No, dude, you misunderstand? Legitimately? This was the actual comic strategy. I’m not making this up as a “fanatical Cass fan”, this was the plan in the comics for years. Cass was training to take Bruce’s place.

After the arc with Lady Shiva, Cass’ series kicked into full gear with Cass expanding her horizons and training in other areas, her new goal was to live her life and to take over for Batman, it’s all she ever wanted after conquering her death wish, it was her full goal and objective.

And Bruce knew this and started training her detective skills as a result. (Something Dick had already started working with her on during the Bruce Wayne: Murderer?/Fugitive arc and had been set up since the Lady Shiva arc)

Now am I saying Dick couldn’t or even shouldn’t have been Batman during this time period after BftC? No, I’m a fan of DickBats, but here’s the thing: Dick never wanted to be Batman. And Batman was never going to be a permanent title for him, not because of Bruce’s given return to the cowl, but because Dick had already carved out a well respect identity and mantle for himself outside of Bruce’s shadow. He was a prominent superhero who was going to leave his own void and rift in the community the more he was drawn into the Batman mantle.

And being Batman, while Dick would grow into a new form of the identity separate from Bruce’s, was never going to perfectly be Dick’s style. Nightwing is an extension of who Dick is, it is his second skin, always has been.

Bruce himself has never wanted to take that from Dick. Dick’s never wanted to step away from it. Dick’s entire coming of age story was about him becoming something greater than the sum of his parts and influences.

Like the entirety of Dick’s time as Batman is him having to deal with this situation, something he never really wanted to do, something Bruce never wanted him to have to do, and even him coming to own the situation doesn’t make that any less true.

He has the connections over Cass for sure, and the experience of some of the finer points of how Batman’s position works, but Dick didn’t want it, Tim never wanted it, there were two people whose entire characters dealt with them wanting the position of Batman after their father left the mortal coil or even just the mantle on its own.

Hell this desire and ambition was so well known that even in FabNic’s Red Robin run where Tim’s subconscious created a future Justice League of his closest friends and colleagues, guess who cameo’d as not Batwoman or Black Bat but as Batma[n:

I think what irritates me most about this entire situation, though, is this idea that I have to dislike or not want Dick as Batman in order to state the canon fact that Cass was supposed to take up the mantle as Batman next according to literally everyone from 2003 forward until OOPS actual time for someone to replace Batman.

Not like the DC Universe had a 20+ year history of multiple people in the same world carrying the same mantle at that very same time. How you doing there, Green Lantern 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8– Or that that would be exactly what happened when Bruce came back and no one cared whatsoever.

Or maybe I’m just increasingly put off by this idea that I’m “just a Cass fan.” I feel like literally every opinion I talk about anymore is somehow voided to most people by the fact that I’m a known fan of one character and that my analytical abilities is just completely useless if that character’s involved like I have no self awareness.
