Scenes readers don't realize took forever to write.

What's one scene you spent way more time writing than your readers probably realize?

Mine was a chess match.

I asked someone who plays regularly to make sure it made sense.

The funniest part? Almost nobody in my real life knows I'm writing fanfic, so I had to come up with an explanation for why I suddenly needed a chess expert.

The Writer's Search History

My search history is an excellent reminder that context is everything.

Mine currently includes:

• Life in the 1920s: pullman train compartments, radio technology, and washing machines

• How accurate were forensic investigations?

• Can alligators destroy evidence?

• How easy was it to dispose of a body?

Fortunately, there's a perfectly innocent explanation: I'm researching for my fic, Static Sonata.

Why I Keep Writing #3

Writing has taught me to be kinder to myself.

I used to think everything had to be perfect before I could share it.

Now I know that stories grow one page at a time, and so do the people writing them.

Progress has become much more important to me than perfection.

Writer Starter Pack

1. Start before you feel ready. You won't magically wake up one day knowing how to write your story.

2. Don't be afraid to cut words. Writing is like sculpting. Every cut reveals the story underneath. That beautiful 2,000-word scene might become an even better 500-word scene.

3. Trust your readers. Show the emotion, reinforce it when it matters, then let readers connect the dots.

4. Notes count as writing. Character sheets. Timelines. Random dialogue at 2 a.m. I keep a note on my phone for story ideas because the best ones always seem to appear in the most random places.

5. Your first draft doesn't need to be perfect. It just needs to exist. You can't edit a blank page.

6. Editing is part of writing. Your story gets better one revision at a time.

Why I Keep Writing #2

One of the biggest surprises of writing wasn't finishing a story.

It was meeting the people who decided to read it.

Every thoughtful comment, every discussion, every shared theory reminds me that stories are meant to be experienced together.

I never expected writing to introduce me to so many wonderful people.

Why I Keep Writing #1

Writing has changed my life in ways I never expected, so I thought I'd start a small series sharing some of those thoughts.

Before I started writing, I thought stories only lived in my imagination.

Now they feel like worlds I can visit.

Sometimes I look up from my keyboard and realize hours have passed.

That has become one of my favorite feelings in the world.

Then his fingers brushed beneath her chin, guiding her gaze upward.

"Tell me, Evelyn."

"Do you believe in justice?"

The question caught her off guard.

"Yes."

Alastor regarded her for a moment.

"How fortunate."

Evelyn studied him.

"You disagree?"

A faint trace of amusement touched his smile.

"Did I say that?"

How Many Ways Can One Man Smile?

One of the hardest parts about writing Alastor is that he never loses his smile.

Happy?

Smiling.

Threatening someone?

Still smiling.

Mildly annoyed?

Smiling.

Emotionally devastated?

Believe it or not...

Still smiling.

The Comment Section Is Dangerous

Reader: Leaves an innocent comment.

Me: "Wait."

"...that's actually a fantastic idea."

One of my favorite things about posting on AO3 is that sometimes readers inspire scenes I never would have thought of on my own.

I love that part of writing. ❤️

A Moment of Silence

Started editing at nearly 200,000 words.

Finished editing at 175,000.

At first I was terrified of deleting that much.

Turns out the story wasn't mourning those words nearly as much as I was.

Those 25,000 words died so the remaining 175,000 could live.

Every. Single. Time.

Me: I have a solid outline.

My characters: That's adorable.

Me: Wait, where are you going?

My characters: Somewhere much more interesting.

Even the Radio Demon Deserves a Vacation

Me while writing Static Sonata:

"Today someone will have a mental breakdown."

Me this week:

"What if Alastor complains about sand, grills burgers for everyone, and goes swimming with his wife?"

So I wrote a fluffy beach one-shot.

Sometimes both the characters and the author need a vacation.
