Each month we auction a doll for a different cause. This one has been a lot of fun because I worked with a local class of primary school students to create the doll and her story. I’ll let her introduce herself:
"Hi, my name is Lexi. Growing up in an isolated part of Tasmania my parents gave me little TV-time, lots of books and a love for the environment. I always played outside - whatever the weather - and my parents took me for bushwalks whenever they could. This wasn’t an escape, instead it was like coming home! I may have grown up, but my desire to be in the bush remains and I am fortunate to have now become a bushwalking guide and share my adoration of the great Tasmanian countryside with others."

This lovely doll was donated by the class teacher Grant Williams after I was invited to come along and give the class a demonstration on upcyling dolls. My visit generated a lot of discussion in the classroom (and at home) and the students helped me to develop a character for the doll while I demonstrated repainting her face. I decided it would be great if the class also choose the good cause that the doll could raise money for. They chose the Tasmanian Land Conservancy
The Tasmanian Land Conservancy does great work purchasing and conserving irreplaceable land that is important for biodiversity and protecting rare species and ecosystems. www.tasland.org.au
Today we even took Lexi along to meet a couple of the staff, Clarissa and Phillip who were happy to show her around. She was pretty excited! So many more places to go walking!
80% of the final selling price of this Tree Change Doll will go to the TLC. They have earmarked the funds to go to The Big Punchbowl wetlands project (http://www.tasland.org.au/the_big_punchbowl) to protect the habitat of a number of threatened species including the Tasmanian Devil. The remaining amount will go towards eBay fees, postage and handling and admin around the charity doll project. Any remaining funds will go towards start up costs for Tree Change Dolls which is transforming from a hobby for into a part time small arts business.
