Getting out of Brendonâs car, you took a step back to admire it under the low light.Â
âIt really is pretty Brendon.â You sighed, crossing your arms. Brendon had sent you photos of a BMW M4 Coupe about 5 months ago. It was a gorgeous car, and he was looking for something new. With his surgeon salary, and his persuasive personality, he was able to get a good price for a used BMW that was only a few years old. He sent you a selfie with it when he got it. Nerd. âThank god the trunk is huge, or else I donât think my bag wouldâve fit.â You laughed as he locked the car.Â
âShe ainât no family car.â He laughed back, âDo you like the interior?â
âI told you tan was the right choice.â You smiled.
âAlright alright, we know you have taste.â He rolled his eyes while opening the door to the restaurant. Stepping in, the smell of meat on a grill filled the air. You could hear it sizzling. God you were so hungry. Once you two were seated and you got your drinks, you immediately drank about a third of your glass.Â
âGeez, slow down on the water.â Brendonâs eyes slightly widened. âDid you not drink anything on the flight?â
âI had a cup of water, but you know Iâm always dehydrated." A smirk grew on your lips, âWhat about you though, shark out of water.â Brendon shook his head with a groan.Â
âYouâre not going to drop that are you?â He tilted his head with an unamused look. You just flashed a big bright smile.Â
âOf course not! So why do you think they call you âThe Sharkâ?â You held up fingers to quote his nickname.Â
âThey say Iâm mean in the ED, but honestly their stupidity is what causes them to get called out. Mistakes in the ED make my life hell in Ortho..â His tone then got more serious. âSomething minuscule can lead to my patient having a harder time with recovery, more pain, or even loss of a limb.âÂ
âThat makes sense,â You replied.Â
âBut everyone in my department is competent. Iâd like to think Iâm nicer to them, because if not, that truly makes my day shit.â You laughed.
âOkay, but I heard that you have this presence.â Holding your hands up while you made a face, eyes wide. âLike you could sniff out blood⊠like a shark.â Brendon furrowed his eyebrows before letting out a short laugh.Â
âI tend to be very⊠short with the bottom dwellers. I donât like being called down there so I try to make it as quick as possible..â
âYou are Mr. Take No Shit.â You raised your eyebrows. âWho knew you were so lethal at work though.â You poke him in the cheek before talking to him like a baby. âYouâre just a guppy.â Brendonâs face squinted as he swatted at your hand.Â
âI am not a guppy.â He insisted, but you gave him a look. âOkay maybe not to you, just donât tell anyone.â He winked.Â
âAre you saying youâre only soft with me?â You teased, tickling his forearm with a finger.Â
âDo you even have to ask, you booger.â He rolled his eyes, hooking his index around yours that was still trying to scratch at him. The action made you warm up a bit. Brendon didnât normally do physical contact, but he let you poke and prod at him. It was nice to have him initiate it, even if it was just a finger. âSomeone has to stop you from running full force into a tree.â He looked up with a sly smile.
âI was not going into the tree!â You pulled back, crossing your arms with a huff. âI wasnât even running.â
âYou were literally sprinting to beat Matthew to the Golden Egg. All you saw was shiny shit and I donât think you realised you tripped over two tree roots before I caught you.â Last Easter Brendonâs parents had set up an Easter Egg hunt, even though all of you were adults at this point, the youngest Park insisted on it. They thought it would be cute to see all of you aged up hunting. It turned more into a scream fest with fighting. Alex had at one point stolen one of your eggs and you tackled him, getting yours back and stealing a few in return. It was chaotic.Â
âYour dad said he put 100 dollars in that thing, and you let your brother get his grubby hands on it before I could. You know Iâve been saving for new sunglasses.â
âIf we go buy it this weekend, will you say that I saved your ass from going to the hospital?â
âMaybe,â you immediately responded with a cheeky smile. Brendon had gifted you some very nice things for Christmasas or your birthday, but never just because. He had an good amount of money, i.e. his car, but he wouldnât just buy something that expensive on a random weekend. âBut seriously, I donât want to spend that much money on it right now.âÂ
âAlright,â He shrugged.
The rest of dinner went by well. You two talked about anything you hadnât updated each other on. With your work schedules, you didnât get to talk to each other as much as you liked, but you two kept tabs. You told him about your new promotion, and how you were looking for a new place to move into. He told you about some crazy stuff from work, like how there was a multi-car pile up and how he had to work 18 hours. His job was actually insane, but he loved it.Â
Once you two were stuffed on burgers and fries, you got back into his BMW and started the drive over to his house. You had been there to help him move into his first apartment in Pittsburg, but that was a few years ago. You hadnât had the chance to see his house in person yet, but he got this nice townhouse in a nice neighborhood with his nice car and his nice fac-
âWeâre here.â Brendon announced as he pulled into a garage. The place was nice. You knew his place would be nice but you were expecting it to be charming as well. The building was made of brick, and was more traditional than modern. The drive from the city wasnât bad, but you definitely moved to a more residential area, it was cute, really homey. Brendon got your bags from the back and started to move inside. You strayed a few steps behind, trying to look at everything. Once inside, he gave you a tour of the first floor. He had a few paintings on the walls, a cute plant on a counter, and well paired throw pillows on his couch. You were expecting it to be pretty bare, but he didnât do a bad job with the interior. He probably caught on to your ramblings when you were decorating your apartment, thank god. The decorations were minimal but they fit with his personality, put where they felt right and not overwhelming. He probably could have used a rug or another side table, but he made it a home, all on his own.
You were surprised at the coziness. Maybe you were just crashing from the travel day, or maybe you werenât expecting Brendon to not come to you anymore. When you were younger, you two asked each other for advice on everything. You dragged him dress shopping every year for Homecoming. You couldnât make a decision without confirming with him that the dress looked good. For your sophomore year, you were starting to become obsessed with this red dress that a lot of girls wanted that year. It had a short poofy skirt with bling on the bust, and you were able to get your hands on it first. You were so set on getting it after trying it on but Brendon was not having it. He eventually convinced you to try on this other dress that you truly fell in love with, and looking back he was totally right.Â
For college and his residency, Brendon literally asked you to help him with his apartment. You two went shopping together for home goods, bought posters from some of his favorite movies at the local game store, bought all the stuff for the medicine cabinet at Target. You really liked helping him with his place and he kept asking you questions about where things should go once he was post residency. You expected that when he moved after that that he would have some different decor, but almost everything in his house was new, more mature. It looked good without your help, and you couldnât help but feel a little butt hurt about it. You liked being needed by him. You knew that you two had drifted a bit, but it was different seeing the change up close.Â
âSo what do you think?â Brendon spun around, his arms held out.Â
âI like it,â you smiled softly, looking around. âThe window in the kitchen is really nice.â
âI know right. I love watching the birds and squirrels while I make my coffee in the morning.âÂ
You rolled your eyes with a laugh, âWhat did you name them?â
âFreddie and Daphne,â he said with a straight face.
You snorted, âYou geek.â
âAs if you have never named the neighborhood squires back home.â He shot you a side eye, âAnyways, let me show you to your room.â Brendon headed upstairs to where the bedrooms were. The stairs led to a hallway upstairs with 3 doors, two on the left and one on the right side.Â
âHere is your room.â Brendon led you to the first door on the left. âThe bathroom is here right to your left and if you need anything, Iâllâm right here across the hall.âÂ
âThank you, Brendon.â You gave him a smile as he put your bags on top of the dresser.Â
âIâm going to take a shower and then head to bed,â he looked down at his watch. âYouâre free to eat any of the food in the pantry or to watch TV downstairs, just keep it low.â
âIâll be blasting Pitbull at 3 a.m. just for you.â Brendon shook his head, trying to fight the smile pulling on his lips. Before he let you see that he lost the battle, he pulled you into a hug. You reciprocated, wrapping your arms around his torso, your cheek laying against him. Stepping into your space, he let out a small exhale. You felt his breath move some of the hair near the crown of your head.Â
âIâm glad youâre here, Bug.â He lightly stepped back, his hands still on your shoulders. The childhood nickname makes you lightly snort with a fond smile.Â
âMe too, Spud.â You squeezed his forearm with your right hand. Brendonâs smile grew hearing his nickname.
âAlright, Iâm going to go clean up.â He patted you on the shoulder before pulling away. âGoodnight.â He turned to walk out.Â
âHey Brendon,â you called out before he could fully leave, âcould we brush our teeth and stuff together like we used to do?âÂ
âOf course, Iâll come get you after I finish my shower.â He said, eyes holding that same fondness they were earlier.
âAwesome,â you gave him a soft smile. One he had left, you let out an exhale, your smile falling with it.
A/N: RAHHHHH what did you think? did you like it? I need validation... What do you think will happen/ what do you want to see? I would love your thoughts. SEND ME ASKS, QUESTIONS ANYTHING I CRAVE INTERACTION. anyway, hope you loved it la la la la - em

TRAUMA TRIAGE NOTE
23 y/o male presents to ED ambulatory with right hand wrapped tightly in what appears to be a Great Value kitchen towel secured by duct tape and poor decision-making. Patient pacing in triage visibly nervous, repeatedly stating, âItâs not a big deal,â which in Emergency Department language means this is absolutely about to become a big deal.
Initial assessment reveals multiple puncture wounds and lacerations to right hand with swelling and active bleeding controlled poorly by the towel.
Vitals:
* BP: 148/92
* HR: 122
* RR: 24
* Temp: 99.1°F
* SpOâ: 99% RA
Patient initially refuses mechanism of injury.
We ask:
âSir⊠did a dog bite you?â
âNo.â
âWild animal?â
âNo.â
âHuman?â
ââŠtechnically no.â
At this point the trauma resident already looking stressed because this man has the bite pattern of a National Geographic documentary.
Patient finally whispers:
ââŠit was a shark.â
Now everybody in triage freezes because we are in the middle of inland West Virginia. Ainât an ocean within reasonable bad decision distance.
Naturally we ask where this occurred because public safety and infection control suddenly become VERY important.
Patient refuses to answer for another 15 minutes while clutching his hand dramatically like heâs protecting state secrets. Finally states:
âBass Pro Shop.â
Silence.
The whole triage desk collectively buffering like an old Windows XP computer.
Apparently this man climbed onto the decorative rocks near the giant aquarium âtrying to impress a girlâ and thought the small shark âlooked friendly.â Sir⊠it is a SHARK. Their entire brand is ânot friendly.â
Patient states:
âI thought if I touched its nose it would like me.â
No sir. That works on Labradors. Not sea missiles.
We contact Bass Pro Shops to verify incident because now Risk Management, Animal Control, and probably somebody named Randy in corporate has entered the chat.
Bass Pro employee answers the phone already exhausted and immediately says:
âWas it the guy in the camo tank top?â
So THIS was apparently not even a difficult investigation.
Now we have to complete:
* Trauma documentation
* Animal bite protocol
* Tetanus update
* IV antibiotics
* AND an exotic animal incident report because nowhere in nursing school did they prepare us for âretail shark assault paperwork.â
Orthopedic consult walks in, looks at the hand, then looks at us and asks:
âYâall sure this was a shark?â
Before anybody can answer, Bass Pro manager calls back and says:
âYes. We reviewed the footage. He barked at it first.â
At this point I no longer need coffee because the adrenaline of healthcare has fully entered my bloodstream.
Patientâs final statement before transport to imaging:
âI still got her number though.â
.
.
.
Sir.
You lost a chunk of your hand at a sporting goods store flirting near freshwater taxidermy decor.

âOh my god, oh my god, oh my god.â Trinity chanted as she basically ran over to Dennis and Victoria. The moment you had left the hospital doors, everyone immediately started talking about you. Or more so your interaction with Park the Shark. No one in the ED had ever seen him act that human.Â
âUh, did he just hug someone?â Dennis asked, dumbfounded by the scene that just played out.Â
âHe smiled at her!â Victoria harshly whispered. âHe looked so normal.â
âI think you mean abnormal.â Trinity added. âIt was so weird to see him like that.â
âWhat did she say to you?â Victoria quickly asked, her eyes wide in anticipation. No one had really been paying attention to the hub until Brendon came out around. People were usually wary of his presence, but the moment he had spooked you, they were immediately curious of what was going on, so they kept an eye out,Â
âShe said that they have known each other for a long time and that sh-,â before Trinity could continue with the story, Samira came crashing into the trio. Dennis caught her before she actually fell down. Steading herself, Samira put one hand on Trinityâs shoulder and her other was still holding onto Dennisâ arm.Â
âWhat the fuck was that?â She blurted out, still trying to catch her breath. âIâve never seen anything like that in my time here. I donât think Abbot has either.â She looked to the left to the older attending. He had a confused look, like he was a kindergartener that just saw his teacher outside of class for the first time. He didnât think it existed. No one thought they would ever see Park be nice in the ED. Like yeah, he had that East Coast âkind, not niceâ vibe. The kind of guy who would help someone change their tire while simultaneously telling them they were stupid to never learn themselves and that they should know better. But to see him be nice, maybe even sweet in the hospital was absolute uncharted territory.Â
âContinue, continue!â Victoria started to slap Trinityâs arm. At the same time, Dennis grabbed Mel by the arm, spinning her around into the huddle they created. The surprise made her yelp out but she was immediately locked in on their conversation.
âI asked her if he had always been bitch, and genuinely she surprised.â
âNo way.â Dennis looked surprised himself.Â
âI hope you didnât say that.â Mel winced at Trinity.
âDifferent wording,â she waved her off, âshe said he pouts and is a goofball. Oh my god! And the photo, she showed me this hilarious pic of Park when he was younger. She was going to send it to me but then he came up.â She whined, then pouted," Wouldâve been perfect blackmail.â
âWait,â Dennis jumped in, âdidnât he say something about her sharing "propaganda"?â
âYes! Thatâs all he said about the photo, and he saw her show it to me!â Trinity raised her voice at the realization.
âAnd he didnât chew her out? Or you either?â Samira asked.
âNope.â Trinity popped the p in the word. âJust smiled and then hugged her.â
âThen, he picked her bag up without her asking or him complaining. He just took it.â Dennis held his hands out, jestering where you were standing at the Hub counter earlier.Â
âYouâre joking? The Shark? Being nice?â Samira laughed as she stepped back, releasing her hold on Trinity and Dennis. âThey have to be together.â
âThat would make sense.â Mel mused.
âNo no no,â Trinity didnât let the thought settle. âShe said they were oldtime friends, probably childhood best friends with how young he looked in that photo.â
âSo he wasnât born with his bitchiness.â Victoria thought with a finger on her chin. Trinity gave her a weird look for her choice of wording, in which the other just shrugged in response.Â
âThe shark persona was created later on.â Dennis added.Â
âThat makes him sound like a furry.â Trinity recoiled, giving Dennis the hardest side eye. Dennis just rolled his eyes and sighed, mumbling a whatever before Trinity continued on. âHe has the capacity to be a normal human being.â
âBut chooses to be a bitch.â Victoria finished Trinityâs thought, the rest of them nodding in agreement. Before any of them could continue their gossiping, Robby interrupted by peeking his head around their little circle.Â
âDonât you all have charting to do?â He asked with a slight tease to his voice. Victoriaâs eyes widened immediately, realising she had called a doctor a bitch in front of her boss and wanted to run away. She had mumbled something about getting back to work but before she could escape the conversation, Trinity spoke up.
âWasnât that crazy though?â She asked her attending.
âOh absolutely, never seen anything like that from him.â Robby looked over his glasses at the younger pittlings. They were all displaying different emotions, frozen in their own thoughts at the new information that Robby had just revealed to them. âGet back to work.â he said pointedly, noticing their lack of movement. That had snapped them back into reality as they all scattered in different directions, getting back to whatever they had to do before their shift ended. Robby sighed and rubbed a hand over his face. When he looked back up he made eye contact with Abbot who had come in early for his shift. Robby nodded at him as the silver haired man came to a stop in front of him.
âFucking weird right?â Abbot pointed a thumb behind him.
âFucking weird.â Robby affirmed with wide eyes.
A/N: This was fun to write! I hope I stayed true to the characters. Thank you so much for all the support, I cannot there are so many of you already! Please let me know what else you want to see about this story because I love the ideas!

The plane ride wasnât bad. You mostly read your book, or slept. There was something about flights that made you sleepy. After landing at Pittsburgh International Airport, you ordered a car to take you to Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. The car ride was about 30 minutes, so Brendon should be done by the time you get there. Pulling out your phone, you went to update him on your ETA.Â
Landed! Headed to the hospital now
I am so hungry, need dinner asap
You better have picked a good place
that is fast, imma get hangry soon
Brenden didnât text back immediately, he usually never did unless it was past 8 pm. He was likely still in his surgery. Since he had to scrub out and finish some paperwork after, he told you to wait for him downstairs. And he very much told you not to wait in the ER lobby, as it was âtoo chaoticâ and âyouâll likely end up needing to be seen if you put yourself in that messâ. Which you took offense to. Like yeah you were a little clumsy but a waiting room couldnât be so bad that it raised the possibility of you getting hurt. It was just probably loud and you knew how much Brendon valued quiet time. One time when you were around 15, he fucking shushed you in your own home. He got smacked for that. But you had learned his need for low levels of noise, and he learned your inability to control your voice volume. Lesson learned.Â
Brendon had given you a pinpoint location for where to be dropped off at and where to enter the hospital through. Being so anal organized, he also gave you specific instructions on where to wait and said he told the charge nurse in the ER department you would be coming.Â
When you were dropped off, you collected your stuff and walked past some nurses and doctors taking a break outside. Walking in, you saw a large circular set of desks where a handful of people were at. Bingo. The hub. Brendon said he would meet with you here as soon as his shift ended.Â
âHey, what can I help you with?â a younger brunette asked from behind the counter.Â
âHi! Iâm supposed to wait here for a friend.â You replied before quickly adding.,âHeâs a doctor! Not a patient.â
âOh, who is it? I can let them know youâre here.â she replied.Â
âBrendon Park.â You stated. It looks like your words stun her as her eyebrows immediately furrow, She is taken aback and her jaw drops a little. She is trying to find what to say, but her brain cannot comprehend what you just said. Brendon had told you that he had a reputation at the hospital, especially in the ED but you did not expect him to cause this type of reaction. You thought he was just exaggerating to look cooler.Â
âUh, Iâll let the charge nurse know.â The words tumbled out of her mouth as she cranned her neck to look for someone else. She looked around until she found an older blonde woman exiting from one of the corridors. âDana!â she called. âSharkâs uhh- friend is here.â She didnât sound super sure of what she was saying, the weird look she had did not help either. Shark? You thought. They really called him a shark? Brendon could be a bit snarky, but this felt different. He had a lot of explaining to do later.Â
âHi, sweetie.â The blonde greeted as she came up to you. âMy nameâs Dana. Dr. Park will be down as soon as he can. Just hang tight,â she smiled.
You smiled back and turned to set your bag down on the down floor, letting out a sigh. You did not pack light.Â
Rolling her chair closer to where you were standing from across the desk, the brunette held her hand out. âMy nameâs Trinity.â
âNice to meet you!â you shook her hand as you introduced yourself.,Â
âHow do you know Park the Shark?â she tilted her head.Â
âOh,â you were still surprised to hear the name. âWeâre old friends. Weâve actually known each other for most of our lives.â you smiled..Â
âOh wow.â Trinity sat back, her eyebrows raising. âHas he always been such a⊠sourpuss?â she asked tentatively.Â
âKinda,â you laughed at her choice of words. âhe can be a bit grouchy. But I would describe him more as pouty. He doesn't get what he wants, he pouts. Like he can absolutely rip someone a new one, but if itâs not something super inconvenient, he doesnât get mad about it. More annoyed if anything.â
âThatâs insane.â Her eyes went wide.
âWhy? Whatâs he like at work?â you lean in closer.Â
âThereâs a reason why we call him a shark.â Trinity leans closer to you too, looking around before continuing. âHeâs swift, calculated, and has a nasty bite. He wonât hesitate to put someone in their place.â
âTell me more.â You whispered, gripping the edge of the counter as you kept inching closer, wanting to be on the secret. You were so surprised. Beatrice and Brendon told you snippets of his work personality, but what Trinity was telling made him sound like an dick.
âEveryone is scared to get in his way, doesnât want to be chewed out by the scariest doc in the building.â
âScariest?â you pulled back with a laugh.Â
âThatâs the sentiment in the ED, I donât know how it is up there in Ortho.â she shrugs.Â
âNo⊠Brendon? Heâs a goofball.â You pulled out your phone and started swiping, trying to find the picture you were thinking about. âLook.â
You turned your phone around and showed Trinity a photo of Brendon. It was him, a bit younger, with a birthday hat on and frosting across half off his face. He had his tongue out, trying to reach blue frosting on his cheek. His eyes were looking up, concentrating with his eyebrows shot furrowed. He looked like a normal person. Someone who might actually have fun. Nothing like what Trinity was used to and her jaw was dropped.Â
âOh. My. God.â She reached out for the phone, wanting to get a better look at the photo. âYou have to send me this photo.â she looked up as she laughed.Â
âGladly.â you smirked, grabbing your phone back from her.Â
Just as you started the process to send it to her, a very familiar voice behind you halted your actions.Â
âYou better not be spreading propaganda about me.â His gruff tone startling you and making you yelp. You held your phone to your chest, totally because you were spooked and not because you didnât want Brendon to see what was on your phone.Â
âJesus Brendon, way to sneak up on a girl.â You let out a huff, putting your hair back in its place.Â
âShark.â Trinity mouthed at you, before quickly turning around to her work. You turned to face Brendon and opened your arms out for a hug. He immediately opened his arms and welcomed you in an embrace. Wrapping your arms around his torso, you gave him a tight squeeze. You honestly were using a good amount of strength, but it didn't phase him. In return, he gave you a quick squeeze back and you yelped from the surprise. It had been a long time since Brendon had seen you. He was always happy to see you, but this time you were here in his city and he was excited to say the least.Â
âI cannot believe you have that photo of me.â Brendon sighed, shaking his head with his arms crossed against his chest.Â
âItâs so cute!â You held your phone out for him to see it fully. âLook at what a baby you are,â You cooed, looking up to Brendon to see his reaction. Brendon just side eyed you and rolled his eyes.Â
âI thought you were getting hangry, stop spreading stuff like that,â he pointed at your phone, âand letâs go get burgers.â You perked up at his last word. It was like you were a secret soldier awakened.Â
âOh burgerss," you basically droolled. âYou know me so well.â
âI knew youâd want something fulfilling after the flight.â He tilted his head with a small smile.Â
âMmmm.â you hummed, unmoving as you thought of taking a big bite out of a juicy burger. While you were in your head, Brendon picked up your bag from the floor and bumped you lightly with his elbow.Â
âCome on, Iâm starving.â
âDonât have to tell me twice.â You snapped out of your meaty daze. âIt was nice to meet you, Trinity!â You call back as you follow Brendon out of the door. Trinity waved back at you before murmuring, âThat pic wouldâve been so good to have,â to herself. She sighed, pushing her chair across the way to go talk to her colleagues about the new gossip she had.Â
Walking next to Brendon, you looked up at him. âThanks for getting my bag, Park the Shark.â you teased with a smile and an eyebrow wiggle.Â
âSo youâve heard.â He let out a laugh.Â
âYouâve got a lot of explaining to do,â you said pointedly.Â
âOver dinner.â He shook his head with a small smile. He didnât talk aboutÂ
âYouâve got a deal,â you smiled, âI cannot focus with my stomach growling.â
âI also canât think with your stomach growlinâ.âÂ
You lightly slapped him on the shoulder in a fake offense, rolling your eyes.

Boarding!!
See you soon âïž
You texted Brendon while waiting in line to get on the plane. It had been about a year since you two had seen each other. Both of you had made it a mission to see each other once a year, whether it was Christmas time when you were both back home, or a little fun visit to the otherâs city like you were doing now. With the random Friday off, you were able to schedule a trip over to your bestie. He also happened to have the weekend off, so it was perfect timing. Deciding to fly Thursday after work, you were going to meet him at the hospital since your flight landed less than an hour before his shift ended. It was going to be the reset you needed.Â
You two first met when you were still in the single digits. It was a sunny day at the park, at least thatâs what your mom says (she retells the story every time Brendonâs over for dinner at your childhood home). You had launched yourself down the slide a little too fast and ended up skidding out the bottom, scrapping your knees on the uneven ground. You sat up and started pouting, but no tears had started. A young boy around your age came around, and started pointing and laughing at you. So you got up and started chasing him, obviously. He was going to get it, because how dare he laugh at you while youâre down, literally. Weaving around the pole of the playground, you had your arms out trying to nab him. Eventually, you caught up to him and pushed him, yelling for him to apologize. Both your moms saw the commotion and rushed to figure out what was going on. After you two finished pointing fingers at each other, they made you apologize to each other. After making up, you too hesitantly started playing together, and began to get along. Being friendly, helping each other around the playground, still teasing the other though. Your momsâ had noticed the change in dynamic and decided to trade contacts to set you two up on playdates.
You two ended up going on quite a few playdates. It worked out well for your parents. Whenever one set had commitment, the other set would look after you two. First it was playing with cars and barbies (basically GTA), then it was legos, and eventually turned into kitchen experiments. Once you guys got old enough, you were doing homework together. Well, more distracting each other from homework. And that continued through college. You would call each other while doing busy work, but assignments barely got done. Brendon had shown himself to be much nicer than how you two first met. He was a gentleman at his core, thanks to his mom Beatrice.Â
He helped you get over your first boyfriend, keeping you distracted and reminding you that you didnât need that shit. He was also still a stupid man though⊠he had his moments. Like that one time in high school when he left you waiting for over an hour to go out and get food. Yeah, the next day when you went over to his, you were scolding him the moment you closed the door. Subsequently he was yelled at immediately after by Beatrice who heard the whole thing from the kitchen. He made it up by being your personal chauffeur for a whole month. He was genuinely remorseful and was being extra nice for a while after that, but still a dick move.
By the time he finished medical school, Beatrice told you he became more rough around the edges. Which you had noticed when he would be very curt the very few times he called during work. Besides that, it just felt like he grew up (finally). Your moms had always said that you were a bit sharper than him in your younger years. He was a bit of a meathead like his brothers for a while, but they all eventually got better.Â
You were really excited to hangout with Brendon. That man loved his relaxation, and thatâs exactly what you needed this weekend. But you also couldnât wait to annoy him to his wits end. It felt like a slice of home.Â
By the time you had boarded and gotten to your seat, Brendon had texted you back.Â
Ask: "could you maybe possible write Dennis Whitaker in a secret relationship with someone (maybe a med student who works at a different hospital or on the night shift at PTMC or something) and when they finally decide to tell people, no one believes him?"

âHey Whitaker, Santos and I are going to get Thai tonight, you wanna come?â Victoria asked, wiggling her eyebrows as she leaned on the counter of the nurses station.Â
âI canât,â Dennis' shoulders tensed slightly, âI already have plans, but let me know the next time you guys go.â he responded with a small smile.Â
Unconvinced, Trinity groaned. âHuckleberry, this is like the third time youâve told us that. Are you ever free?âÂ
âIâm sorry!,â He held his hands up in surrender, âIâve just been busy lately.â He moves to walk away from the conversation, but Santos steps into his path. He abruptly stops, almost crashing into her. She squints at him while he avoids any eye contact with her, looking to Victoria for help.Â
âWhat are you hiding?â Santos continues to glare at him, well more his cheek.Â
Dennis rolls his eyes, âNothing!â he shakes his head before turning around and escaping from her interrogation. Â
â10 bucks heâs part of some kinky cult,â Turning her head to Victoria, who just sighs, grabbing an iPad before walking away.

The last time Dennis checked his phone was about 3 hours ago, right before he put a 60 year old manâs knee back in place. He had been booked and busy since then, running around without a second to stop. But he hadnât stopped thinking about his date later that night.Â
He had met her about 6 months ago on one of his few days off. He decided to treat himself to some coffee that didnât taste like the hogwash from the ER staff room. He rubbed his face as he reached for the door to the coffee shop, still not fully awake. At the same time that he went to grab the handle, another person went for it too, accidentally grabbing his hand.Â
âOh my god, Iâm so sorry,â she pulled back immediately, her face flushing as she made eye contact.Â
âItâs no worries, I got it.â Dennis smiled, fully opening the door to let her in first.Â
âThanks,â she gave back an embarrassed smile before scurrying inside in front of him.Â
When Dennis got in line, he looked up at the menu, deciding if he should try something different or do his usual. He was really debating on getting one of the shopâs weekly specials though. He usually didnât stray from his usual order, but it was his day off, he should treat himself.Â
âHi, can I get an orange creamsicle cappuccino?â he asked, pulling his wallet out from his pocket.Â
âFor sure!â The barista smiled. âBy the way, your drink has been paid for.â Dennis halted his motions.
âHuh?â, he tilted his head, eyebrows furrowing.Â
âThe girl before you paid.â The barista pointed towards the girl who he opened the door for.Â
âOh, uh thanks.â He shoved his wallet back down into his pocket. The barista wished him a good day as he moved out of line and towards the girl. If she felt like she was in the wrong, sheâs wrong about that. He was incredibly tired and didnât see her at the door. If anything he shouldâve paid for her drink for his clumsiness.Â
âThank you,â he said as he got next to her, âyou didnât have to do that.âÂ
âItâs an apology for my awkwardness.â she let out a snort, âand you looked like you needed a pick me up.âÂ
âI need my fill of coffee, even on a day off.â He sighed, looking at the pick up counter.Â
âItâs my day off too! Where do you work?â She asked, turning to him.Â
âPTMC,â he said. Turns out she worked at the same hospital in the Pediatrics department. After they both had drank half of their coffee, they decided to sit down at a table to continue talking. Maybe it was their common workplace or the fact she was so funny, but Dennis was enjoying every minute of it. The conversation flowed easily, and he didnât feel like he had a front on or hide anything about himself. She was genuine and pretty. Really pretty. They ended up talking for over an hour. Talking about family, the transition to Pittsburg, the weird sound the south elevator makes. When they eventually had to go their separate ways, Dennis gathered up the courage to ask for her phone number. Because he had to see her again to pay her back for the coffee.Â
Since then, they have spent every sliver of time off together. So tonight they had planned to get dinner at their favorite Italian place. They planned to go right after their shift ended, not risking going home and getting comfortable.Â
By the time Dennisâ shift was ending, he could almost smell the lasagna he was going to order later that night. He just had handoff and then his dreams would be a reality.Â
Walking to the nurseâs hub, he saw that she was already waiting for him. âHey,â he smiled, slowing to a stop in front of her. âI just have one more thing and then Iâll be good to go.Â
âAlrighty, Iâll be here.â She beamed, setting her bag on the counter. Trinity squinted at Dennis as he walked away.Â
âWho is that?â she bumped her shoulder against Victoriaâs, nodding towards the unfamiliar face. Victoria followed her line of sight before shrugging her shoulders.Â
âProbably a friend?â she suggested with a tilt of head.
âAs if Huckleberry has friends besides us.â Trinity scoffed, making Victoria roll her eyes.Â
âJust ask him.â Trinity rolls her eyes to Victoria in return before walking over to Dennis. He just finished handoff and was ready to leave, but Trinity blocked him like a linebacker before he could make it back to the hub.Â
âWhoâs the chick?â She asked, raising her eyebrows at Dennis. He looked back at his girl with a smile.Â
âMy girlfriend.â He said shortly with a nod, then swiftly moving away from Trinity before the cork blew off and he was hit with it. He was tired of hiding it from everyone. It wasnât like he was doing it on purpose, he just wanted to make sure the relationship was serious before he told anyone. Everyone wanted to poked their noses in other peopleâs business, so he just wanted to be private for a while, which just meant that he was quiet about the whole ordeal. But he was so happy. He got to be himself and found someone who loved that. Someone who supported him and who he supported back. They understood each other to a degree that was kinda unexplainable to him. But they fit together so well together that there was no way he would go back to what life was like before her.Â
Trinity watched Dennis walk away, her mouth slightly agape. Then, she let out a snort sound, making Victoria stare at her with wide eyes. After a moment, she started to cackle, her laugh getting soon louder and she doubled over. Victoria threw a pen at her in an attempt to snap her out of whatever was happening. Trinity just ignored the pen hitting her, picking it up and walking back over to the curly haired girl, still having a giggle fit.Â
âWhat did he say?â Victoria leaned over the top of the counter, itching to get as close to Trinity to hear the news.
âHis girlfriend?â Trinity laughed out, shaking her head as she spoke.Â
âAnd you donât believe him?â The younger girl leaned back with an eyebrow raised.Â
âNo!â letting out an exasperated laugh as she let her hands fall. âHe is just lying to get out of Thai night.â
âWhatevery floats your boat.â Victoria sighed. âWhatever, letâs just get going, Iâm so hungry.â
âI am right.â Trinity pointed a finger at the other before moving to leave together.Â

The next morning, Dennisâ supposed lie had spread across the ED. There was even a bet set up by Ahmed.Â
âYou donât really think he has a girlfriend do you?â Trinity looked up to Perlah from the computer.Â
âIt could explain why heâs been more smiley lately.â Perlah pointed out.Â
âOr it could be because he doesnât have to deal with you two after hoursâ Princes motioned to the two pittlings.Â
âHey! He likes us.â Victoria defended, crossing her arms over herself.Â
âYesterday he was just complaining about how you guys donât take his restaurant suggestions.â Robby interjected, squinting his eyes.Â
âHe has bad taste.â Trinity shook her head. âOne time he took us to this grody BBQ place in the middle of nowhere.â
âDidnât you say it was the best BBQ youâve ever had.â Robby tilted his head.Â
âYesâŠâ Trinity hesitated, âbut the atmosphere was not it, he doesnât get a choice anymore.â Robby just shook his head with a sigh. As the conversation continued, Dennis walked in through the triage door, in step with the same girl that was waiting for him the night before.Â
âIs that her?â Princess asks, nodding over to the entrance. All heads at the station turn.Â
âCould you guys be any more obvious?â Robby laughed, lightly knocking his knuckles against the counter. He shook his head at the antics of his staff before moving to start his day, but still kept an eye towards the lot.Â

âOh god,â Dennis saw the all beady eyes staring at them as they walked.Â
âYou think theyâre talking about us?â She asked from next to him with a small smile. Dennis just dropped his head with a huff. âWord travels fast.â she laughed.Â
âIt does,â Dennis looked up to meet her eyes, his head still handing low.Â
âLetâs give them something to really talk about then,â Before Dennis could ask what she meant, she had raised to her tippy toes and snaked her hand to lay on his shoulder, pressing a soft kiss to his lips. She started to pull back but Dennis quickly leaned down and kissed her again, his hand on her cheek to halt her from pulling away. It wasnât anything crazy since they were at work, but it was more than enough to get the gossip going. Smiling, they said their goodbyes and went their separate ways.Â
Trinityâs jaw dropped, eyes following Dennis as he walked to the lockers.Â
âYou owe me 20 bucks, Santos!â Victoria exclaimed, pointing at the girl who was still in shock.Â

Dennis was half way through his shift, and all he wanted to do was lay down. Today had been dragging on longer than normal. He honestly would skip dinner so he could crash right after work, but he was too hungry for that.Â
âHuckleberry!â Santos called, âDid you hear? Some of the others are going to Round Up after we get off. We should totally go.â
âWhat is Round Up?â Dennisâ eyebrows furrowed.Â
âItâs some country themed bar downtown. Itâll be so fun, and youâll feel right at home.â She smirked, patting him on the shoulder. Dennis opened his mouth to respond, but was interrupted when Robby called him.Â
Throughout the night, Dennis kept debating about going to the bar, and had decided he wasnât going to go about 4 hours after Santos told him about it . He would likely have a few drinks and feel out of place, so there was no good reason to go if he knew it wasnât going to be that fun. He also didnât want to waste any money that he didnât need to. But his mind changed when he had a particularly draining case at the end of his shift. Plus, Dana said she would buy him a drink. The distraction was needed.
* * *
The bar was loud, but honestly what else was expected. It wasnât super crowded, but there was a good amount of people. He stood near a high top with his coworkers while he finished up his second drink. He was starting to loosen up from the drink and the atmosphere, and was enjoying himself.Â
âYou should have seen the look on Robbyâs face when I told him Whitaker changed scrubs for the third time,â Langdon laughed, looking at Dana.Â
âAt this rate, Iâm going to end up emptying our whole scrub supply by the end of the week â Dennis laughed as the others joined him. It felt nice to let loose, and talk to his coworkers about the silly things instead of serious medical information. Seeing them in this light was refreshing.Â
Dennis tipped back his half full glass, taking the rest of it down. âHey, Iâm going to go grab another, Iâll be right back.â He said as he held up the now empty glass. He weaved his way around the crowd and made it to the edge of the bar. It looked like there was a bit of a wait, so Dennis leaned one of his forearms against the counter, and let his eyes wander to the bottles behind the bar. He didnât spend long looking at the different alcohol on the wall as his thoughts were interrupted by a voice.Â
âHey!â A girl had slid into the empty space next to him. She had previously been trying to get the attention of a bartender, but gave up when she saw how busy they were. âYouâre not dressed up right,â She frowned playfully, pointing to his scrubs.Â
âI just got off of work, didnât have time to change.â He smiled shyly, looking down at his clothes. The girl was pretty cute wearing a cowboy hat with boots to match.Â
âNot very country of you.â She faced him, mirroring his stance. âWell, what type of doctor stuff do you do?â, she said, waving her hand in the air.
âOh no, Iâm not a doctor just yet.â He shook his head profusely. She inched closer to him as she was straining to hear him over the music and crowd. âIâm a 4th year med Student and just started my emergency rotation at the PTMH.âÂ
âOh thatâs cool!â She pulled back. âHow are you liking the city so far?â
âItâs really cool. Iâm still getting used to the city, itâs nothing like home.âÂ
âWhereâs home for you?â she asked, tilting her head.
âSmall town in Nebraska, I lived on a farmâ he looked down at his glass as he twirled it around on the bar. He was getting nervous, he didnât talk about home a lot. He felt like any time he brought it up, Santos just found another way to make fun of him. It didnât bother him a lot, but it was getting annoying. Â
âOh a real country boy!â she laughed. âWell, do you know how to two step cowboy?â She felt that they were nearing a touchy subject, so she wanted to lighten the mood up.Â
âItâs been a while since Iâve danced.â he smiled nervously.
âWell, dust off them dancing boots and letâs see what you got.â Her eyes lit up and a hint of a southern twang came out as she spoke. Taking his arm, she led him to the side of the dance floor. Dennis had been a little reluctant so she didnât want to go right into the middle of the crowd. Besides, she wasnât in the mood to be the center of attention, just the center of his attention.  Â
An upbeat country song was playing in the background when she stopped on the outskirts of the dance floor. Her right hand slid from his forearm down to his hand. âJust follow the music,â she smiled, moving her other hand to lay on his shoulder. âAnd donât step on my toes, these are my pretty boots.â She playfully warned him by pointing at his nose.Â
He let out a laugh at her comment and looked down at her brown leather boots. They looked well kept. Likely her going out boots if she had other pairs, Dennis thought. White embroidery littered all around the shaft, outlining some design he couldnât make in the dim lighting. He was still looking down at their feet as they started to move. The last time he danced was probably when he left for med school. When he graduated from undergrad, his family threw a get together to celebrate. He thought he wasnât the best at dancing then, so right now, he felt as stiff as his drink.Â
âYouâre getting it,â she cheered. They had had a few missteps, but were able to find a good groove after a minute. While he felt out of practice, she thought he was better than most of the guys who came to the bar. It seemed like his muscle memory was starting to kick in. Dennis then finally looked up and settled his eyes on hers.Â
âItâs coming back to me,â He gave a small smile. He took his hand off her back and started to spin her with the hand that was still in hers. A genuine laugh came out of her from the unexpected move. Â

It wouldâve been a miracle if Dennis didnât catch the eye of the friends that he earlier abandoned, but god was not willing to grant that one tonight.Â
âWhereâs Huckleberry?â Santos asked, looking to the bar to see a sliver of the mousy boy.Â
âHeâs over there, twirling that girl around.â Dana tipped her drink in the direction of the pair, âLooks like you owe me five Langdon.â, smirking to the man on her left. All heads turned to the dance floor to see the event.Â
âDidnât know he had it in him,â Langdonâs mouth parted in surprise.Â
âHe doesnât look half bad at dancing,â Javadi mused before taking a sip from her glass of water.Â
Dennis finished orbiting her around the floor, and they laid their eyes back on each other.
âAre you sure you havenât danced recently?â She jested. Her words and smile charming him.
âIt helps that I have a pretty partner,â Dennis froze, âI mean- a pretty good partner,â He looked a bit alarmed. He didnât mean to say that but Freudian slip got the best of him. Â She giggled at his misstep, taking the compliment both ways.Â
âWell having a handsome leader to follow certainly doesnât hurt.â She replied. The music started to shift to a slower song and the couples around them started to follow suit. âDo you mind if we keep dancing?â
âNo, I uh- Iâd love to.â He answered. He moved both of his hands to rest around her waist. âIs this alright?â
âGood to me.â She hummed. Moving her hands to link behind his neck, she settled in the swaying movement he started. âNow tell me, whatâs your name, partner?â, seating at his wording earlier.Â
âDennis, and yours?â Their faces were close, not close enough to touch, but not far enough for him to miss the spots on her face. She drawled out her name, not taking her eyes off him. It mightâve been the drinks in her system, but he felt like more than just a dance at a local bar. She wanted to talk to him more. Maybe they could talk over some drinks that they hadnât gotten to earlier. Or maybe they could set something up for a later date, she would like that.Â
In the corner of Dennisâ eye he saw Dana trying to get his attention. She didnât want to disturb him but they were leaving and he was said he needed a ride from someone. She had her thumb out pointing towards the exit, trying to mouth some words to him. Dennis got the message, and sighed, turning his attention back in front of him.Â
âThis has been such a good time,â Dennis started, âbut Iâve got to get going now.â He frowned.
âAh, no worries,â she shrugged, and took her hands off of him, shoving them in her pockets. She was a bit disappointed that their night was ending but understood nevertheless. âCould I get your number?â She waited a beat before asking but the words came out a bit faster than she meant.Â
âOh yeah sure!â Dennis fumbled to get his phone out. She put her number in his phone, and then sent a message to herself saying Dance Partner from Round Up with cowboy hat emoji. After returning the phone to him, she smiled and squeezed his bicep, âI had fun, text me.â She then walked off, hoping that it wouldnât be the last time she saw him.
With his phone still on in hand, Dennis was softly smiling as he watched her walk away.Â
âGood time kiddo?â Dana asked as she clapped his shoulder.Â
âAmazing.â He let out, still looking in the direction that his partner left.Â
Dana laughed, âAlright letâs get you home, Mr. Whipped.â
As someone who goes out to actually dance at socials, not just the club (i donât dance two step but still) this touched my heart in such a personal way ugh amazing five stars

âGood time kiddo?â Dana asked as she clapped his shoulder.Â
âAmazing.â He let out, still looking in the direction that his partner left.Â
Dana laughed, âAlright letâs get you home, Mr. Whipped.â

Whipped.â
