I was shooting around the neighborhood on Sunday and this Sikh gentleman stopped to ask me some questions.
He asked if photography is my hobby, and I said yes it is. He said it is good to have a hobby and I wholeheartedly agreed. Then he asked me what I do with the pictures. I said something, I forget what, but it caught me off guard for some reason. I don’t really do anything WITH the pictures. Taking the images, developing them, looking at them; that IS the doing, if that makes sense? But how do you explain that to someone?
At the same time, I was thinking, this is a cool looking dude. I live in a super white-bread suburb in South Carolina, and all I see is soccer moms in Land Rovers. Recently, I’ve been thinking a lot about HONY and other street portrait projects, and I thought, fuck it, I’m going to ask this guy to take his portrait. And surprisingly, this guy said yes. I took the shot, we parted ways, and I continued my walk. This was the only shot that was worth a damn from the roll, and I am so glad I just asked…
