I remember a teacher telling me how Archaeologists would hack off the noses of statues they found in order to remove any indication that it was of a black person or any POC. It hurts me to think of all the art we’ve lost and damaged because of historical revisionism and flat out racism.
I…wasn’t taught this. Only about penises being broken off as censorship.
When I was in primary school (around 8 or 9) I asked why none of the Egyptian statues had noses. They lied to us and said that they broke off because they were a really fragile bit of the statues so when I learnt the real reason (years later) I was so pissed off with teachers for lying to millions of school children around the world. It’s disgusting and needs to be taught properly.
Tears for you
You asked if I would cry tears for you
And at the time I didn’t know
If I could shed tears
for a hardened broken soul
My memories filled with bottles of beer
And at your death I did shed tears
Of grief I’ve held since this began
All for you until the very end
Tears of anger for the times you left
To wallow in all the secrets you kept
Hidden from everyone this lonely man
We never met or could understand
And I cried bitter tears as I heard cries
Of all the stolen years and broken ties
Tears of sadness as I saw them there
By your side saying no one ever cared
The guilt of not knowing what was said
To drive you away to the stray path ahead
And it broke my heart to hear them mourn
Of mixed feeling and they still feel torn
Tears so bitter like our family’s name
All of the suffering to them we blame
Of a life ended too soon that could’ve been saved
From a cruel world full of waste and twists of fate
Go in peace my loved one you will be missed
As we cry tears for you wishing everlasting happiness
For the all time great
I have never been well acquainted with my grief.
We are two strangers sharing a body,
And I am afraid of letting her take over.
My insides scream to push her out,
But the more I fight her,
The more she controls me.
And I want to hate her,
Hate her for loving him,
Hate her for reminding me of him,
Hate her for not wanting to just get over it.
But hating her makes me feel like losing him,
And I don’t want that either.
On days like this,
She wraps herself around my soul,
And shows me of all the memories we’ve had,
All the memories we could’ve made.
I see myself kneeling at his grave,
And I see her wracking my body,
And the tears cascading down my face.
Reminding me of the pain she’s caused me.
But then,
She shows me the silence after the funeral,
And the isolation,
And the atmosphere of darkness in my life,
Reminding me that the greatest grief is feeling none at all.
