Given The Chance ~ Chapter 1
You’d built quite the reputation for yourself over the past few years. Enhancing any skillset that may be useful along the way. And clearly you’d impressed some of the higher ups since you were currently sat opposite Churchill himself. “There’s a team I want you to meet” he informed you “it is my thinking that you will be a valuable addition to the group”.
That was all there was to it really. Nobody argued with orders from that high up. You’d been given an address and made your way there that same afternoon. The gates at the end of the driveway had been left open since they knew you were coming. As you got out of the car outside the front of the house though your intuition told you something was amiss.
The front door was left ajar and there wasn’t a single light on in the whole house despite the sun sitting low in the sky and darkness setting in. Since the Nazis were yet to hold any British soil you assumed this was some form of convoluted test.
Taking a moment to look over each window carefully, you were sure that there was nobody positioned in any of them. You looked over your shoulder under the guise of fixing your hair and fought back a smile as you spotted somebody hidden behind one of the shrubs. Moving around the front of the car, you dropped to a crouch so that the house was hidden from view.
“I’m a little old for hide and seek” you called out to the person in the bush “and it seems you’re not particularly good at it anyway”. There was a pause of silence before a man stood and appeared, making his way over to you. “Ah ah” you mimicked a gun with your fingers and aimed it at him “if we’re going to play games, you’re going to have to play your part” you imitated two shots at him.
“Seriously?” he asked with raised eyebrows. You simply smirked at him and maintained your position. Reluctantly, he moved to sit on the ground and pulled out a pipe to light.
“Funny actions for a corpse but I’ll let you off” you peered over the car to see if there was any movement at the house. “Don’t suppose the corpse wants to help a lady out with some intel?”
“That wouldn’t be playing the game now, would it?” he shot back.
“I don’t know, I’m rather good at getting information out of enemies” you shrugged before standing and making your way slowly to the house, leaving the man behind. Rather than head for the open door, you headed around the back and sided up to a window before carefully peering inside.
A smile graced your lips as you spotted not one but two men waiting in ambush of the front door. Did they think you were some sort of novice? Silently jimmying the window open you climbed through. They were mid conversation when you appeared behind them, both hands mimicking guns again “looks like you’re out boys” you spoke up.
The one on the right jumped slightly as he turned to face your raised hands. “Thank god for that” the other simply commented “now I can get back to my book”. He stood from where he was crouched and held a hand out for you to shake.
“Fairly certain corpses don’t shake hands” you joked “let alone read books”.
“You’re really going to insist we remain here?” he asked incredulously.
“Hey, this game was your team’s idea, not mine” you insisted “if we’re going to play then you have to do it properly”. The two men shared a look before sitting back on the floor with a roll of their eyes.
“We’ll wait here then it seems” the one from before spoke up again “if it’ll speed the process up you may want to check upstairs next”.
“What a helpful corpse” you winked before peering around the doorway and assessing the situation “I’ll be quite upset if the information is bad though”.
“You can trust that I want to return to my book more than I want to sit here” he promised. Deciding to take his word for it you slowly moved for the stairs. Taking them silently, testing for any creaks before each step. As you reached the top, you were caught off guard by another woman launching herself at you.
Regaining your balance, you rolled yourself out of the way and sparred with her, dodging kicks and punches whilst assessing her fighting patterns. Once you had a read on her you started to counter move. Moments later you had her pinned to the ground and mimicked a fatal blow. “Pleasure to meet you” you smiled as you moved into a crouch and carefully assessed the corridor.
“It’s going to be lovely to have another woman around” the woman smiled up at you “the men can be quite unruly at times”. Sparing her a smile you stood and moved to start checking rooms. As you went to open one on the right, you felt tension on the door as your started to move it. Checking it over, you spotted the wire at the top right corner.
Taking a blade from your belt, you cut the wire before opening the door the rest of the way. “Really thought that would work to be honest” a curly haired man sat opposite the door in a chair.
“Sorry to disappoint” you shrugged before throwing the blade to the wall right beside his head “and also you’re out”.
“So it seems” he laughed as he pulled the knife from the wall and started to dig dirt from his nails. That was when another man grabbed you from behind and lifted you from the ground. Fighting against his hold was useless, he had a strength advantage against you. This would require more practical thinking.
Swinging your leg into the back of his knee, you knocked his balance and the two of you went to the ground, giving you chance to escape from his grasp and turn to face him. He was huge! “Hey handsome” you grinned before rushing towards him whilst he was still on the ground.
He was quick to counter every move you threw at him and a silly move on your part had you pinned beneath him on the ground a few minutes later. “Damn” you sighed as he grinned victoriously.
“Don’t feel too bad, Lassen is our best when it comes to brute force” the man from the chair finally stood up and made his way over to you.
“Hey handsome?” the man in question asked as you remained pinned beneath him “you greet all enemies that way?”
“Just the pretty ones” you grinned at him before pointedly wiggling for him to let you up. He finally released you and offered you his hand to pull you up.
“I like her already” he turned and grinned to the other man.
In the two weeks that you’d been at the house integrating with the rest of the Ministry, you’d grown particularly fond of Marjorie, Anders a
