AP exam in 18 days. Feel like I know nothing! Really bad at history. You have a lot of resources (and omg thank you so so so much) but what do you recommend I do to study? And study without having panic attacks (i kind of just had one and its 2:30 in the morning on a sunday)
I don’t normally answer questions here, but this is a bit too dire for me not to address. Here it goes:
First of all, do not panic! You know things about stuff. That is all that matters. You gotta tell yourself you know things because you don’t see heroes going into battle with an attitude like “oh man idk. maybe I won’t win cuz I can’t hold my sword right sometimes” NO. YOU GOT THIS.
Secondly, I suggest maybe taking a diagnostic test like the ones found in Barron’s or Princeton (the two biggies you can probably find in any library) and seeing which time period you struggle with and which ones seem more solid. From there, I’d attack the weak ones.
Thirdly, vocab vocab vocab. Especially on the essay portion, the readers will be impressed if you can throw things like the jizya tax or the Red Scare into an essay. Anything that may help boost your ethos in the essays is good. Also, reading good essays will help you grasp the basic structure that readers are looking for.
Fourthly, get sleep. Yes, it doesn’t seem like a good study tactic, but it really REALLY does help. Just like a pond or lake, if it’s clear and cool, you’ll be able to find the treasures hidden in the deepest crevices.Â
Fifthly, hopefully this isn’t too much stuff to consider, but to address your panic attack hinderance, I wouldn’t do too much at once. Take a walk after an hour or sing really loud. Anything to help you relax.
Sixthly, glance at notes the morning before the exam. Who knows, you might save your butt on one or two questions you may have otherwise gotten wrong!
Seventhly, good luck as always. And I’m sure that, as long as you did your work and paid at least mediocre attention in class, you will do better than most.
PS: knowing when really huge events happened is also helpful. I’d suggest knowing when the big Chinese dynasties and European empires existed, as well as things like the Columbian Exchange, the Bubonic Plague, the Crusades, hm, maybe settling America but that’s not too heavily stressed. Basically know the years of some big events to help you orient yourself around which time period the things the test asks about happened.
Hopefully this isn’t too much to do in 18 days, but that’s what I would suggest. Happy studying!Â
